After the death of Judge Kilburn his daughter came back to America. They had been eleven winters in Rome, always meaning to return, but staying on from year to year, as people do who have nothing definite to call them home. Toward the last Miss Kilburn tacitly gave up the expectation of getting her father away, though they both continued to say that they were going to take passage as soon as the weather was settled in the spring. At the date they had talked of for sailing he was lying in the Protestant cemetery, and she was trying to gather herself together, and adjust her life to his loss.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a glimpse into victorian america By Joshua D. Hamilton I discovered this book at my local Sacramento library. I enjoyed the plot and the relaxed pace of the book. The character of the minister is in close parrallel with Reverend Casey in the Grapes of Wrath. Annie kilburn and Grapes of Wrath would be interesting books to read together in a study of how biblical allegory and communist thought are sometimes woven together. Apart from this aspect, i found the book to be a helpful glance back to the lost era of victorian america and the social realities of life during that time. A great read and powerful book in its own right.

Annie Kilburn, his response to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, examines the complexities of doing good works to help the poor in the United States. Written with Howells' usual ironic humor, Annie Kilburn is a delightful book that leaves the reader pondering the issues Howells raises. Look for references to Dickens' David Copperfield and Bleak House in one of the characters. Funny.
