She stood, frozen, at the edge of the diving board. At an early age, Joanne Faries demonstrated absolutely no athletic ability. In Athletic Antics, her latest humorous memoir, the author describes riding her bicycle into the back of a car; climbing trees and sliding (not on purpose) down them scraping every inch of her body; plus surviving the duress of junior high field hockey, lacrosse, and volleyball. YMCA swim achievements (Tadpole, Minnow, Fish, etc.) were halted by the diving board and the teacher nemesis, Ruthie. Would Joanne move on to accomplish Flying Fish and Shark? Could she squint enough to see the other end of the pool? There are men who sing hallelujah upon the birth of a left-handed son, a future Hall of Fame pitcher. Left-handedness can be a blessing or curse. In archery class, being left-handed did not result in a murder, but it came close. In regards to tennis, Joanne's initial serves baffled her opponents and nabbed a few wins. Joanne used every English teacher pass excuse possible to work on school newspapers or yearbook, but sooner or later she faced the horror of gymnastics and had to inch her way across the four inch by sixteen-foot balance beam of death. Track and field was not her forte, nor was basketball, soccer, or any sport involving one's hands and/or feet. As a follow up to her memoir My Zoo World about her fear of animals in an animal loving world, Joanne Faries looks at her athletic life in quirky fashion. Laugh at her foibles, identify with her unattractive gym class attire, and fall off the ski tow rope (on the wrong side) with her. Athletic Antics covers an assortment of sports, and according to her Wii Fit Plus, Joanne Faries cannot walk a straight line.

But She Never Gives Up By Susan Flett Swiderski We can't all be star athletes, and if the truth be known, there are a lot more of us mediocre athletes around than there are Olympians. But most of us haven't written a book about our mishaps, and invited the world to laugh along with us about them. And laugh you will, too, because it's funny as all get-out. Anyone who can remember the agonies of da feet and defeat from ye olde gym class days will especially get a kick out of this book, but I think there's something here for all readers, no matter how high or low their athletic skills may be. One thing that really shines through for me in this book? Joanne may not be the best athlete in the world, but she's gotta be one of the world's best sports. That gutsy gal is willing to try just about anything... anywhere. And no matter what happens, she has the ability to laugh at herself, dust herself off, and try all over again. She's the Energizer bunny... with scabs on her knees and a smile on her face. But don't take my word for it... read the book yourself!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Bloody delightful By Robyn Alana Engel A delightfully cringe-worthy read. I couldn't help but want to comfort Joanne after every smash, crash and bloody, humiliating, yet brave athletic undertaking. Yet I laughed throughout the book. I suppose I could relate to all of it, being a clumsy klutz in my own right. But this author is much more courageous. Nothing stops her from joining her classmates and friends in any and all ventures. The book took me back to elementary school, wherein the dreaded red bouncy ball ruled the day. It reminded me of days when I was thrilled to be picked, not last, but second to last, for a team. It catapulted me into the hell that was Junior High, and I could hear the shriek of a gym teacher's whistle. The author's writing style makes for a very fun read, despite her loss of pride and blood. Thus, in the end, she is clearly a champion.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Full of Laughs! By C. Biltz Anyone who has ever prayed for a fire drill during gym class will empathize with Joanne Faries. Although she feels clumsy, awkward, and inept at various sports, Joanne deserves credit for always being willing to try something new. She tries everything imaginable that is available to her from kindergarten to high school and beyond. What she may lack in skill, she makes up for in effort. In spite of being left-handed and always on the fringes of athletic talent, she does have moderate success in some sports. Unfortunately, many others leave her bruised and bloodied with gravel embedded in her knees. Who hasn’t felt the pressure of being in the public eye when trying to excel at physical endeavors? All of us who were born with minimal athletic talents and who would rather be at home reading a book than trying to stay upright on a balance beam or run laps around a track jumping hurdles will laugh along with the author. Despite suffering cringe-worthy injuries, Joanne is still a good sport and knows that the pain is eased by being able to laugh at herself. You will cheer for her while you are laughing. In my opinion, Joanne and her book are both winners!

Gould in 1877. I doubt there are very many, if any, books written by Americans and the subject of how to camp out before that date. Several things make HTCO special. First, it gives excellent insight into how people camped out over a century ago. I show that people were quite capable of enjoying the outdoors without the benefit of Coleman stoves and lanterns, the L.L. Bean Catalog, an EMS store at the shopping mall or any modern conviences. HTCO helps us understand that people adapted to their environment and could endure the rigors of the simple life because the rewards were far greater. Another thing which makes HTCO special is that it contains practical camping advice which is still pertainent to this day. This ranges from "Don't waste your money buying every new invention." to "Wear what you please if it be comfortable and durable: do not mind what people say. When you are camping you have the right to be independent." There are numerous other worthwhile quotes in the book. These may be found at the John M. Gould website. Another feature is that HTCO gives the reader valuable insite into getting to know its author. John M. Gould served as an officer with theUnion Army for 4 years during the civil war and served on occupation duty in South Carolina for a year after. He was a man who was practical, judgemental and kindhearted. From the book we see his reverence for Creation and his desire to share the best life had to offer with his friends and family. We also see some of his eccentricity when he devotes a full five pages on how it keep a diary. This habit stood him in good stead as his war diaries have been recently published. Regardless of whether you are a novice camper, a Civil War re-enactor, a nostagia buff or a professional historian you will find a rich and rewarding experience by reading "How to Camp Out".

By A Customer I picked up a first edition of this book many years ago, and its condition is evidence of how many times it has been read. (I had hoped to find reprints available that I could give as gifts, but I guess I'm out of luck. Rats!) Mr. Gould provides the prospective camper with valuable advice covering the logistical, psychological, and social aspects of camping. One of my favorite pages is a list of necessities (which, the author cautions, "is by no means exhaustive") that includes first-aid supplies, shingles (to be used as plates), beeswax, a bean-pot, and even a Bible! In a reflection of his military experience, he devotes part of the text to the importance of the division of labor in the camping party and the requirements of leadership in the person chosen as group captain. This is not merely an instruction manual for learning how to pitch a tent and build a fire (although it is certainly that), but also an eloquent treatise on the need for everyone to pull his own weight as part of a group that's living in somewhat spartan circumstances. It is also a primer on etiquette and civil behavior: there is a moving admonishment to the reader concerning the treatment of farmers: "Do not be saucy to the farmers, nor treat them as 'country greenhorns.' There is not a class of people in the country of more importance to you in your travels; and you are honor bound to be respectful to them. Avoid stealing their apples, or disturbing any thing; and when you wish to camp near a house, or on cultivated land, obtain permission from the owner, and do not make any unreasonable request, such as asking to camp in a man's front-yard, or to make a fire in dry grass within a hundred yards of his buildings...When you break camp in the morning, be sure to put out the fires wherever you are...see that the fences and gates are as you found them, and do not leave a mass of rubbish behind for the farmer to clear up." (Important rules even in the 21st century!) The author also advocates keeping a diary to remember the pleasures of the camping trip long after it has come to an end. In the same way, Mr. Gould's camping guide serves as a reminder of the attraction of "roughing it" in the 19th century. Even if you're not a camper, if you can find a copy, you'll get vicarious pleasure from this splendid book.

13 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Dated, But fun and Informative - Recommended By C. Hill "How to Camp out" is exceptionally dated, but is a very fun read and still has some valuable information to impart. This was published long before a lot of the camping equipment advancements we take for granted and speaks in a tone that many would now now find condescending. With that in mind, it pays to remember that this comes from a different age with different values. Here are my observations:The tone of the book is almost conversational and is somewhat folksy. This was a pleasure to read and sort of brought to mind advice that a friendly uncle or grandfather might pass along. This gem is worthwhile for any age, "Try to be civil and gentlemanly to everyone", but this one (from the "Tent" section) just isn't practical, "...you would do well to have a sailmaker... show you how the work is to be done."As noted above a lot has changed since this was written, here is a random sampling:- Sunblock had not been invented- Buried wooden barrels were used in place of coolers- Alcohol listed as a stimulant- Women "must have a wagon, and do none of the heavy work."One disappointing thing is that the illustrations on the (free) Kindle versions are missing, but it is a minor complaint considering the cost.Recommended!CFH

The title I have given my black heroine, in this second edition of her story, viz.: THE MOSES OF HER PEOPLE, may seem a little ambitious, considering that this Moses was a woman, and that she succeeded in piloting only three or four hundred slaves from the land of bondage to the land of freedom. But I only give her here the name by which she was familiarly known, both at the North and the South, during the years of terror of the Fugitive Slave Law, and during our last Civil War, in both of which she took so prominent a part.

Original Account of Harriet Tubman's Life By Amazon Customer The unstructured account of Harriet Tubman's adventures, exploits and heroics flows in such a way as to make the reader feel she is being thrust into an almost stream-of-conscious presentation. Harriet's life and times were likely as chaotic as the story we are reading. And as the book slowly takes on a more structures tone, so too, likely, did Harriet's life. The reader picks up a sense of the expressions of the time and the implacable demeanor of Harriet Tubman, growing more amazed at her life and her accomplishments from page to page.

Best known for his screenplays for three classic film noirs: Jules Dassin's Thieves' Highway, Nicholas Ray's On Dangerous Ground and Robert Aldrich's Kiss Me Deadly, A.I. Bezzerides's first novel, originally published in 1938, is a fast-paced, hardboiled story about the hard world of independent truckers. It was made into the Raoul Walsh film They Drive By Night, starring Humphrey Bogart and George Raft, in 1940.

Struggling trucker brothers Nick and Paul Benay-hauling their produce loads between Los Angeles and San Francisco-are driving day and night, fighting fatigue and the fear of falling asleep at the wheel with endless doses of black coffee and facing the dangers of the California highway.

"Whether writing screenplays or novels, 'Buzz' Bezzerides was instrumental in defining 'noir'. His in-depth studies of what drives the good, the bad and the ugly, helped articulate the past as much as it informs the present. Read his novels, see his films." WOODY HAUT, author of Heartbreak and Vine: The Fate of Hardboiled Writers in Hollywood

By Brandon Johnson This isn't really a crime story (unless you count the trucking company owners who are constantly cheating the truckers), but it's got all the other characteristics of a hardboiled or noir story. Existential crisis, fatalism, a protagonist who's headed for destruction but can't seem to do anything to pull out of it.In this hardboiled novel from the 1930s, Nick is a trucker whose big break is always around the corner but he can't seem to get ahead. He's always at his wit's end, always tired, always pushing himself. He sees other truckers crash and burn (literally) but never admits that it could be him. Then he falls in love with a woman, which raises the stakes for him, as he wants to do well enough to marry her. And that's all I'll say for now. This was a quick read.

By Felicity Barrington This review is not for the cynics and others who hate America, (whether they live here or not): There are many of us who still believe in the 'American Dream'. Who see in America as a land of opportunity, where a person may make what he wants of himself. This is the reason for the success of movies like the Secret, and books like Think and Grow Rich. Haters of this concept don't believe in the philosophy of 'if it's to be; it's up to me' and personal growth- they believe in the 'it's not my responsibility to be successful, it's the governments, or a union, etc' to make things right. For those of us who DO believe in America and what it stands for, we need to relax from time to time, from our dedicated path to success. From time to time, I like to read a novel or two, to unwind, but there are so few are positive, uplifting, and compelling novels that also promote personal growth and success principles. So finding one or two is GREAT NEWS! However I have made a wonderful discover of a new and magnificently published selection of Horatio Alger books, so now we don't just have one or two, but many, many hours ahead of us to relax, recharge and at the same time instill in ourselves the success principles we all know and love!Cast upon the Breakers is truly inspiring! From poverty to wealth - its what we all want and want for those we love, and here, our hero faces worse odds than most of us would, from villains scammers, cheats, and more. The story read great, the novel and plot is wonderful, as Alger knows how to write well and keep his page turner on track, but what I really like best is how he interweaves HOW success happens, as will as WHY, and the METHODS used. Now don't think that just because this book was written 100 years ago its 'old' and out of date, its not, its like reading any book on personal development and full of great tips that are timeless and just as powerful today as they were when the book was first written. You WILL love this book!

I can see why he sold so many in his day, because they are great stories! Some think of them as old but I don't - in fact the principles that he espouses are alive and well today and will be as long as people like Madoff stay in jail. These stories are delivered with a punch, thrills, and excitement. I'm reading them all, and enjoyed this one about a young boy without family, who has to face villains, thieves, con-men with only his honesty and honor. His persistence and hard work prevails, in a success story as powerful as only Alger can tell.Alger will help you rethink your own way to success - he provides step-by-step ways that his hero moves forward, both practical and via a positive mindset or values. Penetrating and impactful as they are alive today as in is time. Good ideas are always valuable! You will really enjoy it, and after, pass on this inspirational gift!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Cast Upon the Breakers is great Alger fun! By M. Thorsson Our family has really gotten hooked on Horatio Alger. These wonderful stories are so powerful today in this economic climate. Back when they were written, there were no stimulus packages, no welfare as we know it, no food stamps, no income tax! Yet, today there is still such despair, that I feel it's very much the same...So having said that, this book is great for two reasons:1) its shows a method and mindset for success! It's not just a story, but the story explains the thinking and mindset of the hero who overcomes terrible odds to find success. The mindset explained is as powerful then as it is today.2) while the story is fiction, the hero figures out a way to succeed - it of course depends on factor 1 above, his mindset, but, once we see how his mind works, he thinks of a plan to become successful - and what I like is the principles that are used are not like typical fiction, but of ways and means that anyone could use to become successful, good business ideas that are still on target for today! This book is great for readers of any age, young or old, as long as you need a lift, and you want something powerful and good in your life, you will enjoy this great work by Alger! It's all about Mindset!

Narrated by Stephen Hogan and introduced by Roy Keane.

In an 18-year playing career for Cobh Ramblers, Nottingham Forest, and Manchester United (under Sir Alex Ferguson) and Celtic, Roy Keane dominated every midfield he led to glory. Aggressive and highly competitive, his attitude helped him to excel as captain of Manchester United from 1997 until his departure in 2005. He played at an international level for nearly all of his career, representing the Republic of Ireland over 14 years, mainly as team captain, until an incident with national coach Mick McCarthy resulted in Keane's walk-out from the 2002 World Cup.

Since retiring as a player, Keane has managed Sunderland and Ipswich and become a notably contrarian pundit for ITV. He is assistant (to Martin O'Neill) manager of the Ireland team. The TV analyst reflects the manager, the player, and the man himself, the unique Roy Keane - Keano.

As part of a tiny elite of football players, Roy Keane has lived and experienced what very few people could ever imagine. His status as one of football's greatest stars is undisputed, but what of the challenges beyond the pitch? How did he succeed in coming to terms with life as a former Manchester United and Ireland leader and champion, reinvent himself as a broadcaster, and cope with the psychological struggles this entailed?

This book is a personal odyssey, a blend of anecdote and reflection which re-evaluates the meaning of success. In following his personal struggle to reinvent himself, confronting a few demons along the way, The Second Half blends memoir and motivational writing in a manner which both disquiets and reassures in Roy Keane's original voice, in a stunning collaboration brilliantly captured with Man Booker Prize-winning writer Roddy Doyle.

Unexplosive By Anesh I was expecting a furious onslaught of verbal grenades launched in the direction of every foe that had irked Keane in his long career, that's the way the English papers were playing up this book before its launch anyway. Such did not materialize. There are some strong opinions in this book but there are kind words and respect for Ferguson, Viera etc. Much of the content has to do with Keane the manager, much less on his time at Man Utd.

Still, the 'second half' of his career was interesting and the book provides some insight into his acrimonious departure from Manchester Utd as well as his philosophy and methods as a manager during his partially-successful stint at Sunderland and his wholly unsuccessful time in charge at Ipswich. He also discusses his forays into TV punditry where he actually did pretty well at times. All in all, he pulls no punches like in the first book but, unlike the first book, you're left disliking him a little bit at the end of this one.

I have not read many memoirs, but the ones I`ve read have been rather dull. Take Fergusons book for instance, it`s just a dull summary of his career. You could have read Fergies wikipedia instead. With this, I feel that we are brought a bit closer to Keane and the beginning of the end at United up to his inevitable sacking at Ipswich and the current position at Ireland. I have not payed much attention to his career after he left Sunderland, but overall I feel that we are taken as close to the action as possible.

December 12th, 1747.—My life has been strangely bound up with extraordinary incidents, some of which occurred before I had any connection with the principal actors in them, or indeed, before I even knew of their existence. I suppose, most old men are, like me, more given to looking back upon their own career with a kind of fond interest and affectionate remembrance, than to watching the events—though these may have far more interest for the multitude—immediately passing before their eyes. If this should be the case with the generality of old people, how much more so with me! . . . If I am to enter upon that strange story connected with poor Lucy, I must begin a long way back. I myself only came to the knowledge of her family history after I knew her; but, to make the tale clear to any one else, I must arrange events in the order in which they occurred—not that in which I became acquainted with them.

Had her book title accidentally been placed on some other novelette? (The title of the story only makes sense at the end.)Where most of Gaskell's plots utilize natural means to move the story, this one is anchored in the supernatural. There is a copious amount of backstory before the reader arrives at an explanation that employs no little amount of religious mysticism. I'd liken the story's resolution to a scene from Les Miserables for all of its pathos. I suppose it will please some readers, but I was disappointed.

In this tale it is written about curses, witchcraft, exorcism just to touch on the subject matter. I can't say it was one of her best works but it was unusual and interesting.
