I have many objects in presenting this book to the public. First: I love my race regardless of the prejudice against her, the unenviable position she holds, and the things she is falsely said to be guilty of.

"And what is it makes you think I could be of use in this particular case?" asked Dr. John Silence, looking across somewhat sceptically at the Swedish lady in the chair facing him. "Your sympathetic heart and your knowledge of occultism—" "Oh, please—that dreadful word!" he interrupted, holding up a finger with a gesture of impatience.

About the Author Algernon Henry Blackwood, CBE (14 March 1869 – 10 December 1951) was an English short story writer and novelist, one of the most prolific writers of ghost stories in the history of the genre. He was also a journalist and a broadcasting narrator. S. T. Blackwood's Dr. Silence is somewhat unique in this genra as he really doesn't DO very much, the tale more or less seems to unfold around him. Nonetheless, most of these are Blackwood in his finest form. The second story, Ancient Sorceries, has been published in numerous other collections and is a fine example of Blackwood's interest in pagan sorcery. The last story, The Nemesis of Fire, brings in Blackwood's knowledge of the Golden Dawn and Egyptian mythology and is a pretty rolicking good yarn. The first tale, A Psychical Invasion, is a more mundane house-haunting made much more interesting by the inclusion of a cat and dog into the mix. All in all quite good, a must for Blackwood fans and a great intro for the curious. The Kindle version is free, as is the Gugenheim version.Anyone reading this should also track down and read Blackwood's great book, The Human Chord.

I love the psychic detective genre and these fall just behind Carnacki but way ahead of Flaxman Low. Blackwood is a phenomenal writer anyway and while these stories may not be the best in his repertoire they are certainly no disgrace. Very entertaining. I would give them five stars but for the fact that we are told again and again (and again and then one more time) how good, selfless and amazing Dr. Silence is. It gets annoying to say the least. Let us see how pure and benevolent he is by his actions in the stories rather than being beaten over the head with it. Still, that's my only gripe and a small one at that. And hey, they're free so what do you have to lose by checking them out?

The first story is interesting enough, but the second one struck me as greatly lacking that special 'something' that makes Algernon Blackwood's writings so great. All was redeemed, however, in the glorious tale spun in the third story of the book. Gripping, fantastical, and unexpected - this is what makes Blackwood so great. The very Doctor Who meets Professor Layton meets Sherlock Holmes character of John Silence is one of my new favorites, and I can't wait to crack open the next three John Silence stories. Also - it's free. If you like Blackwood's work, don't hesitate.

"Sam's Chance" is a sequel to the "Young Outlaw," and is designed to illustrate the gradual steps by which that young man was induced to give up his bad habits, and deserve that prosperity which he finally attains. The writer confesses to have experienced some embarrassment in writing this story. The story writer always has at command expedients by which the frowns of fortune may be turned into sunshine, and this without violating probability, or, at any rate, possibility; for the careers of many of our most eminent and successful men attest that truth is often-times stranger than fiction. But to cure a boy of radical faults is almost as difficult in fiction as in real life. Whether the influences which led to Sam's reformation were adequate to that result, must be decided by the critical reader. The author may, at any rate, venture to congratulate Sam's friends that he is now more worthy of their interest and regard than in the years when he was known as the "Young Outlaw."

He starts out bad. Truly not a good young man... he has opportunities and when given them, either pawns the ring (not his) and then lies, attempts to steal from his roommate, etc. Sam has some rough times, all of which he earns by virtue of having none! What I liked is how when finally he reaches the decision to have a fresh start he truly does turn over a new leaf. He meets new friends, gains employment and most important of all, the opportunity to have an education. Finally he decides to learn and by golly, he does so.The ending is satisfactory and I'm glad I read Sam's Chance. It shows that you can "pull yourself up by your bootstraps" provided you study hard and are industrious, don't smoke, gamble, or drink. Sam initially made bad choices but he did change. It's a good story.

0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Story of Two Different Paths By A Customer Alger writes another fairly predictable rags to riches story about a fifteen-year-old orphan who lives on the streets of New York. Sam, the protagonist, is a wily young man who takes life as it comes. He never saves and spends all of his earnings before payday.Sam starts the story in the employ of a successful businessman. Sam receives $5 a week, but cannot make ends meet. His roommate, who studies at night and saves money, is more than capable of saving money. In this story, Sam learns that gambling does not pay, that idleness and lack of responsibility at the work place can get one into trouble, and the value of saving money. Alger provides for Sam's about face recovery upon meeting a young woman on the way to Boston -- where Sam plans to relocate for bigger and better things.Alger shows the wrongs and the rights for young man growing up. He advocates avoiding billiards, gambling, and tobacco. He also encourages his readers to study. Sam's roommate, who's behavior and habits are the opposite of Sam's, succeeds, while Sam continues to struggle. This was a fun book to read and light-hearted.

Why did a Houston district attorney decide to involve the state in an area of the law that it has historically treated as sacrosanct: that of medical decision-making? Why did the DA decide to charge McCall with murder rather than criminal negligence in a civil court? Author Lin Weeks Wilder continues Dr. Lindsey McCall's story in the new book, "The Fragrance Shed By A Violet Cover: Murder in The Medical Center".In a city where the Texas Medical Center reigns as one of the top employers in Houston, housing over three thousand medical researchers making the news with new pharmaceutical discoveries almost daily, why did twelve Houstonians unanimously decide to convict Dr. McCall for intentional murder following her trial?"These are the questions that lead investigative reporter Kate Townsend to write a Pulitzer Prize winning series called Murder in the Texas Medical Center. Haunted by the knowledge that her new-found fame has been purchased at too high a price; Kate is sure that McCall is not guilty.Texas Governor Greg Bell hires former homicide detective and criminal defense attorney Rich Jansen to fix the escalating problems at the Huntsville Prisons recently inflamed by a lawsuit against infamous inmate Dr. Lindsey McCall. Dr. McCall is an internationally acclaimed cardiologist, researcher, and a 2002 nominee for the Nobel Prize for Medicine. When Jansen's skills quickly result in the resignation of an incompetent prison medical director, he realizes that this strange saga is just beginning.Mark Twain wrote that forgiveness was the fragrance shed by a violet upon the heel of the boot that has crushed it. This medical mystery weaves together the lives of two sisters, Lindsey, and Paula, with those of strangers as each cope with loss, betrayal, jealousy, and the exquisitely painful journey to forgiveness.Wilder's second edition of her debut novel has it all. Mystery, romance, and dysfunctional family relationships wrapped up in a tale of big pharma and medicine. Literary Fiction Review dubbed it 'A story fragrant with love and forgiveness': literaryfictionreview.com/fragrance.php

Review "...ultimately a story fragrant with love and forgiveness--and not just for McCall. Verdict: A knowledgeable look into medical research, love and forgiveness." --LITERARY FICTION BOOK REVIEW, APRIL 2015Lin Wilder's novel, The Fragrance Shed by a Violet, intertwines medical intrigue, murder, and dysfunctional family relationships into a story that ultimately speaks of love and forgiveness... he story is not overtly about a conversion experience or Catholicism, but rather follows the workings of grace in the trials of life. 0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. like a Grisham novel By LeeAnn Galli This was a very tight, well written story. It did surprise me, because its not a murder mystery. This has more of a courtroom drama feel to it, like a Grisham novel, than the Patterson i was expecting. I very much appreciated that the dog in the story was a Doberman, and was not an attack dog, and did not die. Two issues I had, every character seemed to be obssessed with running, which dragged the story out too much, and the ending could have been wrapped up quicker. All in all, a good read.

The Fragrance Shed by a Violet: Murder in the Medical Center By Lennette The Fragrance Shed by a Violet: Murder in the Medical Center by Lin Wilder delves into something that many of us give no thought to: funding for the research and testing of drugs. The author managed to fuse this information into a story that addresses jealousy, the not-so-perfect justice system, loyalty, and budding love. Dr. Lindsey McCall’s frame of mind changes after an operation goes wrong. This results in her returning to the research that became her focus when she was a little girl. –finding an altered form of the treatment for heart failure called digitalis. Lindsey’s mother suffered from heart failure and she began searching for a way to change digitalis to alleviate the awful side effects that it produced when she was still in high school. Her dedication and research ethic resulted in a drug that would help an untold number of patients. Right now Lindsey sits in a jail cell dealing with the circumstances that brought her to this place. The medical community declares her a genius, yet she feels that her personal life is a complete failure. No one believes that she committed the crime that she was convicted of and Lindsey cuts herself off from anyone that can help her. Enter Kate Townsend, a reporter, jumps feet first into the perplexing series of events that have occurred in Lindsey’s life. You must experience this story of how a reporter; two wealthy sisters; an attorney; and the warden of a prison work together to try to secure a release for Dr. Lindsey McCall. It shows how a few people can believe in someone even when that person knows the truth but chooses to remain silent about it. This was a good and wholesome look at the business of medicine and the lives of the players in that arena. I loved it and I plan to get every book I can find written by this author. This needs to go on everybody’s list of books to read!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A completely different take on murder By Stuart C. Medical murders have become more prominent in fiction in recent years and Lin Wilder does it right in 'The Fragrance Shed by a Violet: Murder in the Medical Center.' From nurses and doctors murdering for wealth or to ease the suffering of those who are too sick there are a slew of reasons that can be used for the basis of these books and in this one we see a Doctor who is thought of as a genius in the field being in jail for a crime no one can believe she would commit.Only, she's blocked any of her friends and colleagues from being able to offer her any kind of help. So when a reporter jumps in who believes that Dr. Lindsey McCall is innocent of the crimes that she is being convicted of things get interesting. At first much of the main character's actions are quite baffling but as her life is exposed on page as the story unfolds it all ends up making sense. The novel isn't so much a murder mystery as the description and title might hint at but more of a courtroom drama mixed with a procedural. There are some strong pieces of character development and while there is a mystery at the book's core it might not be what you suspect. Wilder has put together a well written human drama that is well worth checking out!

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful.

"Charlie and me we heard of a war. Somewhere .... everywhere and nowhere particular. It did not matter...... till someone told us why. So we got in the car and travelled by and by." Be it war, love, birth, marriage or death, or life in general, Ron tackles many subjects and leaves you to reflect, laugh or shed a tear with him. His most famous poem “I Remember Charlie” captures perfectly the feelings of soldiers in a theatre of war, yet this extraordinary Poet can just as easily write about love or a lullaby. “Bright Hope” is a book you will want to browse through often and the paperback version makes a great gift for that special someone or occasion. Ron lives with his wife in Hampshire, England. They have 3 children and 4 grandchildren. Ron is happiest surrounded by his family. As well as writing and reading poetry, Ron enjoys researching into his Ancestors. He is very proud of his Gypsy roots. After several years of military duties, Ron spent 2 years serving as a missionary in Ireland before settling down and raising a family. Ron is also known in the online virtual community of Second Life (SL). People from many parts of the world enjoy visiting his Gypsy Camp in SL. It is a treat to hear Ron read poetry.
