Why did a Houston district attorney decide to involve the state in an area of the law that it has historically treated as sacrosanct: that of medical decision-making? Why did the DA decide to charge McCall with murder rather than criminal negligence in a civil court? Author Lin Weeks Wilder continues Dr. Lindsey McCall's story in the new book, "The Fragrance Shed By A Violet Cover: Murder in The Medical Center".In a city where the Texas Medical Center reigns as one of the top employers in Houston, housing over three thousand medical researchers making the news with new pharmaceutical discoveries almost daily, why did twelve Houstonians unanimously decide to convict Dr. McCall for intentional murder following her trial?"These are the questions that lead investigative reporter Kate Townsend to write a Pulitzer Prize winning series called Murder in the Texas Medical Center. Haunted by the knowledge that her new-found fame has been purchased at too high a price; Kate is sure that McCall is not guilty.Texas Governor Greg Bell hires former homicide detective and criminal defense attorney Rich Jansen to fix the escalating problems at the Huntsville Prisons recently inflamed by a lawsuit against infamous inmate Dr. Lindsey McCall. Dr. McCall is an internationally acclaimed cardiologist, researcher, and a 2002 nominee for the Nobel Prize for Medicine. When Jansen's skills quickly result in the resignation of an incompetent prison medical director, he realizes that this strange saga is just beginning.Mark Twain wrote that forgiveness was the fragrance shed by a violet upon the heel of the boot that has crushed it. This medical mystery weaves together the lives of two sisters, Lindsey, and Paula, with those of strangers as each cope with loss, betrayal, jealousy, and the exquisitely painful journey to forgiveness.Wilder's second edition of her debut novel has it all. Mystery, romance, and dysfunctional family relationships wrapped up in a tale of big pharma and medicine. Literary Fiction Review dubbed it 'A story fragrant with love and forgiveness': literaryfictionreview.com/fragrance.php

Review "...ultimately a story fragrant with love and forgiveness--and not just for McCall. Verdict: A knowledgeable look into medical research, love and forgiveness." --LITERARY FICTION BOOK REVIEW, APRIL 2015Lin Wilder's novel, The Fragrance Shed by a Violet, intertwines medical intrigue, murder, and dysfunctional family relationships into a story that ultimately speaks of love and forgiveness... he story is not overtly about a conversion experience or Catholicism, but rather follows the workings of grace in the trials of life. For complete review: catholicfiction.net/book-review/the-fragrance-shed-by-a-violet.php"... a very well written, fast-paced novel. Wilder's knowledge of medicine and the workings of a complex medical center were on target. She uses this knowledge in developing her characters with amazing success. As with any good mystery, theending was a complete surprise. I would recommend this book."--ANNE BOURGEOIS, FORMER HOSPITAL DIRECTOR UMASS MEDICAL CENTER

This has more of a courtroom drama feel to it, like a Grisham novel, than the Patterson i was expecting. I very much appreciated that the dog in the story was a Doberman, and was not an attack dog, and did not die. Two issues I had, every character seemed to be obssessed with running, which dragged the story out too much, and the ending could have been wrapped up quicker. All in all, a good read.

The Fragrance Shed by a Violet: Murder in the Medical Center By Lennette The Fragrance Shed by a Violet: Murder in the Medical Center by Lin Wilder delves into something that many of us give no thought to: funding for the research and testing of drugs. The author managed to fuse this information into a story that addresses jealousy, the not-so-perfect justice system, loyalty, and budding love. Dr. Lindsey McCall’s frame of mind changes after an operation goes wrong. This results in her returning to the research that became her focus when she was a little girl. –finding an altered form of the treatment for heart failure called digitalis. Lindsey’s mother suffered from heart failure and she began searching for a way to change digitalis to alleviate the awful side effects that it produced when she was still in high school. Her dedication and research ethic resulted in a drug that would help an untold number of patients. Right now Lindsey sits in a jail cell dealing with the circumstances that brought her to this place. The medical community declares her a genius, yet she feels that her personal life is a complete failure. No one believes that she committed the crime that she was convicted of and Lindsey cuts herself off from anyone that can help her. Enter Kate Townsend, a reporter, jumps feet first into the perplexing series of events that have occurred in Lindsey’s life. You must experience this story of how a reporter; two wealthy sisters; an attorney; and the warden of a prison work together to try to secure a release for Dr. Lindsey McCall. It shows how a few people can believe in someone even when that person knows the truth but chooses to remain silent about it. This was a good and wholesome look at the business of medicine and the lives of the players in that arena. I loved it and I plan to get every book I can find written by this author. This needs to go on everybody’s list of books to read!

Medical murders have become more prominent in fiction in recent years and Lin Wilder does it right in 'The Fragrance Shed by a Violet: Murder in the Medical Center.' From nurses and doctors murdering for wealth or to ease the suffering of those who are too sick there are a slew of reasons that can be used for the basis of these books and in this one we see a Doctor who is thought of as a genius in the field being in jail for a crime no one can believe she would commit.Only, she's blocked any of her friends and colleagues from being able to offer her any kind of help. So when a reporter jumps in who believes that Dr. Lindsey McCall is innocent of the crimes that she is being convicted of things get interesting. At first much of the main character's actions are quite baffling but as her life is exposed on page as the story unfolds it all ends up making sense. The novel isn't so much a murder mystery as the description and title might hint at but more of a courtroom drama mixed with a procedural. There are some strong pieces of character development and while there is a mystery at the book's core it might not be what you suspect. Wilder has put together a well written human drama that is well worth checking out!
