A series of sentimental essays with a hunting theme By Fred Zelt This is a 207-page series of stories about hunting ruffed grouse over the last 40 or so years in rural Minnesota. The author is a small-town attorney who has had a lifelong passion for hunting ruffed grouse, and has hunted his coverts with some of today's most famous upland wingshooters. This is a series of eighteen essays, not a how-to book about grouse hunting or a natural history of grouse. It includes about 26 nice B&W drawings, mainly of grouse, by Bob White. White's work has been published in magazines such as Gray's Sporting Journal and Shooting Sportsman. Lundrigan has published stories under the pen name Ted Nelson in magazines such as Shooting Sportsman, Sporting Classics, and Pointing Dog Journal.I thoroughly enjoyed the author's previous book, "Hunting the Sun." I wrote a favorable review of it on Amazon, and have given several copies of it to good friends. "Grouse and Lesser Gods" is much more sentimental and less artistic. Only a few of the chapters, notably the last one, have the outstanding, visionary resonance that is common throughout "Hunting the Sun." I will not be buying copies of "Grouse and Lesser Gods" for friends.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent collection of stories By Jeremy This book is an excellent collection of short stories centered around grouse hunting in the north woods of Minnesota. Each story gives a different look into the author's sentimental attachment to the birds he chases and more importantly the land where they live.I never got the impression that this book should be considered a sequel to "Hunting the Sun" nor did I feel compelled to compare the works. This is a great book that can stand on it's own merit and shoulder to shoulder with the works of Mr. Lundrigan's contempararies.

Follow Boone and Crockett Club founder Theodore Roosevelt during his time in the Dakotas and Montana beginning in 1884. Upon his return from this particular sojourn out west he promptly organized a formal dinner with his friends and colleagues in December 1887 and formed the Boone and Crockett Club. In Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail, Roosevelt records his experiences from his hunting adventures, the people and animals that he encounters, the excitement of the round up, to the everyday life on the ranch. TR's delightful prose provides a straightforward and very entertaining read. The book is handsomely illustrated with 95 pen and ink drawings by the premier western artist of the time, Frederic Remington. This edition of Roosevelt’s Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail is part of the Boone and Crockett Club’s B&C Classics series begun in 2012. Each book in the series was authored by a member of B&C in the late 1800s or early 1900s and was hand-selected by a committee of vintage hunting literature experts. Readers will be taken back to a time when hunting trips didn’t happen over a weekend, but were adventures spanning weeks, months, even years.

From the Publisher 8 1-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover This book describes Roosevelt's routine labor and extraordinary adventures, including a stint as a deputy sheriff pursuing three horse thieves through the cold of winter. Whether recounting stories of cowboy fights or describing his hunting of elk, antelope, and bear, this book expresses his lifelong delight in physical hardihood and tests of nerve.

About the Author Theodore Roosevelt did more for conservation of our natural resources and the preservation of sport hunting than any other person in the history of our nation. He showed a keen interest in nature with his first publication at the age of 20 in 1877 on summer birds in Franklin Co., New York. His experiences in the mid-1880s in the South Dakota badlands gave him a first-hand view of the problems associated with westward expansion, unregulated hunting, and the effects of market hunting. In 1887, he and his closest friends founded the Boone and Crockett Club—the nation’s first conservation organization. He was the Club’s first president and an active member until his death in 1919. Under his direction as Club president and president of the United States, numerous laws and legislative actions protecting wildlife and our natural resources were enacted. The creation of the U.S. Forest Service, National Wildlife Refuge System, and the National Park Service, which are among his most notable achievements, paved the way to ultimately set aside tens of millions of acres for the benefit of wildlife, our nation, and future generations. Theodore Roosevelt was the right person at the right time. Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of cowboys, Indians, and the US Cavalry of the American West in the late 1800s. Love of adventure and the great outdoors, especially in the West, were the bonds that sealed the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Frederic Remington. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," Roosevelt wrote to the western artist in 1897 from Washington. In 1888, Century Magazine published a series of articles about the West written by Roosevelt and illustrated by Remington.

By James Gallen "Ranch Life And The Hunting Trail" is Theodore Roosevelt's narrative of his life and experiences during his time in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s. Published in 1888, it displays Roosevelt's writing at this finest. His picture words make the scenes come alive in all their splendor. This is a TR I never knew existed. For anyone with a love of western adventure, this book is it!Besides providing the sheer enjoyment of reading, this book actually teaches the reader much about the life and economy of the era. I had always heard about the open range and the roundup, but this book makes the concepts clear. Cattle and horses were left to feed on the open range. The herds were divided during the roundup, with the calves given the brands of their mothers, as the way to assert property rights in the cattle. The devastation of a severe winter cannot be imagined until you read an eyewitness account, and few are written as well as this. The challenges of the hunt and the unique characters of the West can be experienced vicariously through the pages of this book.Frederic Remington's illustrations add visual images to the written word. This book is an excellent choice for anyone with longing for the lure of the Old West or a window into the world of Theodore Roosevelt.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Vintage Teddy By starflakes From someone who has lived this life on the great plains from cowboy to hunter, this book is in every detail right on. It is written in Teddy's classic modest style (who else could float the Missouri during spring break up chasing criminals with guns and describe it with as much excitement as buttering toast). It also is a repeat of some of his earlier works as this seems to be a bit of transitional book of when he was about leaving the Elkhorn for the east. The Wilderness Hunter is more poetic and Hunting Trips of a Ranchman is a better read, but the history in this book of how Montana and the Dakotas were made safe by lynch justice makes this one interesting too.The sketches by Remington are wonderfully historic to study and add a great deal to this book. This book though is like all of Teddy's in settling down with a friend and always looking for his next book to find a campfire with him again.Thank God Mr. Roosevelt wrote so many wonderful books.

Boy was I right!!!I had previously read the author's (Bohannan) other book and this one is even better. Truly an expert on the subject of golf in the Palm Springs area, there is nobody more knowledgable on this topic than Bohannan.Very easy to read and covers the entire history of golf in the Palm Springs area -- from it's humble beginnings as a LA resort getaway up to the current PGA and LPGA events that took place a few months ago. Very comprehensive and very detailed, I felt like I learned something new on every page.If I had one complaint it would be I wish it was longer because I didn't want to put the book down!I will be buying this for all of my golfing buddies and family members for the holidays. If you are a fan of golf, a fan of history, a fan of the Palm Springs area or any combination of those, this book is an absolute must read.EXCELLENT READ!!! Would give it six stars if I could

Tom Bonner is a smart kid growing up in inner city St. Louis during turbulent times. Whole neighborhoods are being demolished in the name of urban renewal and as middle class families flee to the suburbs, gangs, crime and decay move in as occupying forces. Tom tries to live in two worlds, competing for a college scholarship during the day while running with a gang at night. When he's accused of arson and murder Bonner has to choose one path or the other. But has the choice already been made for him? Pursued by both police and rival gangs, Bonner stumbles into a network of caves under the city. Betrayed by friends, he's accepted by the enigmatic Tugboat and other down-on-their-luck strangers in a shabby shanty town on the banks of the Mississippi where he learns that school isn't the only place important lessons are taught. Will a terrible storm, a threatening flood and a tent revival provide the formula for Bonner's redemption or his damnation? If you enjoyed Tom Sawyer, The Catcher in the Rye or To Kill a Mockingbird, you're sure to like Welcome to Happy-Land.

Great read and compelling storyline By Avid Reader Characters in this book are so uniquely described that the reader will feel they know these people - particularly Tom Bonner, the main character. This is one of those books where you find yourself thinking about the players even when you are doing other activities. I read this book in one day - just couldn't put it down. Equally compelling are the descriptions of the neighborhoods and life in the 50's and 60's. As a reader, you get very drawn in to the poignancy surrounding the demise of the urban neighborhoods as they give way to "redevelopment." Nostalgia runs high as we follow Tom Bonner approaching adulthood and experiencing love, loss and redemption. A very good read! I highly recommend it.

Whether Soulard or Lafette Square a great time and place filled with memories By Amazon Customer Reading Happy-Land I was immediately transported back to those magical 50’s and 60’s growing up just a few miles and only an equally few years ahead of Tom. I was so immersed in the nostalgia of the old neighborhood that I found it hard to put Happy-Land down and felt compelled to read it in three relatively short and gratifying sessions. This while all the time annotating “post its” with my own parallel life experiences. Though his characters are fictional, the places and events were not, and the roles they played in the life of the lead character Tom Bonner were ones that everyone growing up in the old south side of St. Louis could look back and relate to in one way or another. So much so that I find it all too easy to enthusiastically encourage you to add WELCOME TO HAPPY-LAND” to your near future reading list. Those of you that read either or both of Tom’s earlier books will know the treat that lies in store.Don George

It is a curious fact that of that class of literature to which Munchausen belongs, that namely of Voyages Imaginaires, the three great types should have all been created in England. Utopia, Robinson Crusoe, and Gulliver, illustrating respectively the philosophical, the edifying, and the satirical type of fictitious travel, were all written in England, and at the end of the eighteenth century a fourth type, the fantastically mendacious, was evolved in this country. Of this type Munchausen was the modern original, and remains the classical example.

About the Author The Baron Munchausen was in part the creation of Rudolphe Erich Raspé (1737-1794) who led a life worthy of a tall tale: naturalist, antiquarian, scholar and theif, his name figures with Daniel Defoe and Johnathan Swift as one of the great "travel liars."

By Avid Reader Anyone who ever laughed at the exploits of tall-tale heroes such as Paul Bunyan will instantly recognize the character of the Baron von Munchausen as the king of such heroes. His amazing and daring exploits are rife with hilarity and implausibility. It's part fairytale, part tall tale. The Baron is a figure of pure imagination (loosely based on a real person), a Quixotic figure. Do not confuse this book with a biography or history! Clearly the purpose of the book is to entertain and delight, which it does. The writing displays a superb creativity and imagination, combined with brilliant storytelling of the highest level. Just as you would not read Journey to the West seeking information on beauracratic procedures of ancient China, or Don Quixote de la Mancha seeking knowledge about Spanish funerary customs, you should not read this book looking to learn about the Munchausen family's history or current state. You should read it for the pure thrill of reading a good tale.

The Raspe version is the "canonical" Munchausen story and it's very entertaining. I think that stories for children that mock reality are very good for both amusement and education and this book certainly has its share - for instance the Baron's famous pulling himself out of a bog by his own hair (in an alternate version by the bootstraps, which seems to have formed the origin for the word "bootstrapping" and a general metaphor). His tales also have the classic sense of unbelievable exploration tradition from works like the Arabian Nights and Marco Polo's travels, where exotic lands are described as being populated with people with one giant foot each and other niceties. We laugh at Munchausen but not only so much for the tallness of his stories but also for his character traits such as his pomp and sense of self-importance. As is the case with MANY good children's books, they are philosophical and suit adults as well. The only possible dent may be the portrayal of the Turks which would seem racist by some today. However, this is extremely mild compared to racism in many other classic works, and was certainly not enough to detract from my enjoyment (as was the case with certain other authors from the last few centuries).

Van Court If you've seen The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, you've only experience a fraction of the mischief Baron Munchausen got up to.Beginning with an endorsement by Sinbad, Aladdin, and Gulliver notarized by the the Lord Mayor's porter, the Baron's adventures begin gently and pick up speed. The chapters are of an excellent length for a bedtime story, and weave together whimsy and vivid images. Fending off a lion and a crocodile at the same time (choking the croc with the lion), travelling by balloon over Turkey and Egypt, escaping beheading, travelling to the moon and back, mixing it up with the Sphynx, and meeting lovely ladies at every turn.Brilliant, visionary, fun, ridiculous, with only a gentle touch of irony. A distinct improvement over the sullen irony that dominates the arts today. The Baron and the author are passionate and irreverent, and represent a high point in English literature.Surrealism, fantasy, science fiction, and a host of artists of every stripe can trace their inspirations back to this magnificent work of imagination.E. M. Van Court
