By Cassandra This is a sweet short story about a man worn out from a life of running a business that was passed on to him and that he never cared to run. Finally breaking free from that heavy chain, he discovers afresh the beauty and goodness of life. Throughout the story he struggles with self-condemnatory thoughts, and it is only through being drawn out of himself to help the people around him that he rises above his low self-image and comes to experience the joy, beauty, and value of self-giving love.I don't know anything of the background of this story or at which period of his writing career that Dickens wrote it, but it did not seem to have, I'm going to say, as "Dickensy" a flavor as his other works I've read. A Dickens fan, I think, would definitely still be able to pick out certain turns of phrase, themes, ideas, or literary ploys that are characteristic of Dickens, but on the whole, it seemed to be lacking something of the Dickens I am familiar with. Perhaps that is only because this is a short story, and it is the first of his short stories that I have read. Overall, it was an enjoyable short read and I definitely recommend it.

By james benjamin This book has no pictures , just a list of exercise listed that you can found online for free , also some of the information included in this book is hilarious : ''You will need to eat three meals a day.'' in tips or ''If you need to snack, eat light popcorn'' ??? If you consume 15 chips a day it is equivalent to a small bag of chips, which is 150 calories. This will make you gain 15 pounds in one year.??Is this a joke ??The only good part is the number of exercise listed ,but without pictures it will be difficult to apply theses exercises .

The Irish are renowned for their gift of exploiting the written word. And having grown up in Ireland, Joe Dunne has certainly inherited the craft of storytelling. In his charming novel, Old Dogs And Leprechauns, he has skillfully combined reality with fantasy in a most and entertaining way. Joe has skillfully taken dialog, description and an enchanting storyline and combined them into a tale so touching that you will be moved to tears. Yet the book is delightfully charming and funny with a magical twist. We found it to be everything a good book should be, lovable characters, an old fashioned read, yet intriguing from page to page, brilliant in it’s simplicity and originality, pure entertainment with a great ending. From Chapter 7 Tommy put his arm around her, “It’s okay mam, we put up a good fight.” He said smiling through his pain as she hugged him. Tommy may have had a hard life at home but this woman loved him dearly. He flinched in pain as she held him too tight, her face looked like she had aged ten years. From Chapter 9 “Do you think we’ll be struck down in fire and brimstone and scream and scald in the fires of hell for all eternity then?” He asked as he took another mouthful. Tommy was quick to dispel his fears. “Not at all boy, not at all. Sure we don’t die until we’re old men and by then we’ll have turned to religion and we can atone for our sins and pray all day and night like old people do. Then we’ll repent and beg for forgiveness, they all do it boy… God would never send an old man to hell, eat up now.” For more samples visit www.fadreen.com

Like the author in real life, the protagonist (James) travels over several continents, as well as the realm of the supernatural. Along the way, he meets a variety of colorful characters and experiences a series of exciting adventures and some narrow escapes. Throughout the journey, the author deftly seesaws between reality and the supernatural, drawing the delighted reader with him. Tolkien notes that to successfully write fantasy, you have to invite the reader into a state of “intentional blindness.” To do this, he explains, that if the world you fashion has a green sun; you have to create an atmosphere in which a green sun is credible. In this respect, Joe Dunne hits the ball right out of the park. In addition, he manages to successfully depict some of the ethical problems and issues of today’s world and manages to do so without preaching. In spinning this journey of life, the author displays an outstanding imagination and the story telling gift of an Irish shanachie. I thoroughly enjoyed “Old Dogs and Leprechauns” and eagerly look forward to Joe’s next book.Old Dogs And LeprechaunsOld Dogs And Leprechauns

And I must admit it never occurred to me to write a review before. But having just finished JK Dunne’s book Old dogs and leprechauns I'm compelled to throw my two cents in. I don't usually read fantasy novels but the title of the book got my attention being a lover of old dogs. And boy am I glad I did, it’s definitely a dog lovers book. The author himself describes it as a slow, easy, old fashioned read. It’s anything but slow. In fact I found it compelling, interesting and informative from cover to cover. What an imagination and what a story. I absolutely fell in love with the characters especially that little orphan girl Alana. What a wonderful little girl she'll steal your heart and make you forget you're reading a fantasy novel. I guess that’s called “real talent” when the author takes you on a journey so mesmerizing that you get lost in the story. And yes, it is an old fashioned read with old fashioned values. I could have done with reading this book when I was in my late teens. Five stars.

He must of kissed the Blarney Stone a couple of times. As a story teller he will have you crying from laughing so much. I am so happy that his writing a story is as good. I am enjoying this book extremely and can't wait for book number two. Keep up the good work Joe

I have been asked a great many times in the last dozen years if I would not write an "East-side novel," and I have sometimes had much difficulty in convincing the publishers that I meant it when I said I would not. Yet the reason is plain: I cannot. I wish I could. There are some facts one can bring home much more easily than otherwise by wrapping them in fiction. But I never could invent even a small part of a plot. The story has to come to me complete before I can tell it. The stories printed in this volume came to me in the course of my work as police reporter for nearly a quarter of a century, and were printed in my paper, the Evening Sun. Some of them I published in the Century Magazine, the Churchman, and other periodicals, and they were embodied in an earlier collection under the title, "Out of Mulberry Street." Occasionally, I have used the freedom of the writer by stringing facts together to suit my own fancy. But none of the stories are invented. Nine out of ten of them are just as they came to me fresh from the life of the people, faithfully to portray which should, after all, be the aim of all fiction, as it must be its sufficient reward.

True Stories of a Bygone Time By willisn Written by an ex cop of the time, this book is a series of stories about true happenings, both happy and tragic. It vividly describes the crowded living conditions and precarious everyday life of immigrants and their children. The people of the tenements were our grand and great grand parents, recent arrivals who played a pivotal role in the growth and future prosperity our country.

There is so much to see and explore in the area that it can be overwhelming. This book has some great suggestions for how to plan your activities, and includes kid-friendly activity highlights. It has enough info to serve as a main guide book. The only shortcoming we experienced with the book was a lack of info regarding dog/pet-friendly options. But overall we were very pleased with it!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By becky While living in the Pacific Northwest we wanted a good guide book to plan our trip to the Olympic peninsula. We chose this book due to the great reviews. There is a sample trip planned for those with kids, this was a hit with our five kids. We found a lot of good tips and great places to visit. Usually we just use good old google to help us plan our trips, but having this book was a great asset. I would recommend this book to anyone planning on visiting the olympic peninsula.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Saved our trip. By LSW I bought a couple of books for our western WA trip. This was my favorite. Saved us when Olympic NP closed due to a freak storm -- provided good info on all the other things to do on the penninsula.

Old Style Apocalypse By Curmudgeon Remember when post-apocalyptic fiction was all about fallout shelters and Geiger counters and mutations and fear of Russkies? The Cold War warped the minds and writing styles of a generation or two.Leiber absorbed his share of that warping, but damn good writers are damn good writers, regardless. Yes, this story is dark and warped by the nuclear fears of the Cold War. But it also manages to be dreamily atmospheric, not half as negative as other post-apocs of the time, and to evoke an eerie beauty in places, even as the roentgens mount. It's hard to go wrong with Fritz Leiber.

The "story lines" are good, prompting Benjamin Britten to use two of the characters for his opera Peter Grimes. But getting through the "poem" is difficult because of forced rhymes, and an irregular cadence. Also, the book is a photo copy of the original published book from 1810, an ex library book, so the pages were filled with splotches, faded text, and even library markings. Still the stories are socially insightful, some are sad, some are humorous, and some just right down strange. I suggest skipping the dedication at the front. I found it just a long winded groveling and adds nothing to the story. It would be nice is someone took the time to "translate" the stories into a non-poem. It would be so much more enjoyable that way.
