“And you once said, Heavy Stone, that you did not believe a poilu could love a fat girl!” Helen said it in something like awe. While Ruth’s tea-urn bubbled cozily three pair of very bright eyes were bent above a tiny, iridescent spark which adorned the “heart finger” of the plumper girl’s left hand.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. enjoyable classic from a bygone era By Battleship Alice B. Emerson wrote a nice series of books for young ladies during the teens and twenties. Ruth Fielding was a young girl who was forced to overcome several obstacles in life. She lost her parents at a young age and grew up in the Red Mill under the tutelage of a grumpy aunt and uncle. Ruth was a classy and elegant young lady. She had good character and became a delightful adult.Emerson wrote numerous books in the series. In "Homeward Bound," she details Ruthie working as a nurse in the Red Cross during World War I. She was injured in a bombing raid. She was sent home on a ship. She discovered an intrigue by German passengers. The ship was evacuated and Ruth and a couple of members of the ship's crew were hijacked. A young man named Tom was a friend of Ruth. He was captured by a German zeppelin and was taken as a prisoner of war. Tom made a daring escape and disabled the zeppelin causing it to sink. Tom was able to survive by getting in a seaworthy vessel. Tom and Ruth teamed up to take control of the passenger ship. The ending was a happy one. Ruth was presented as an empowered woman who did her part in the war effort against the German enemy. This was not the best book of the series. It had a plot that was somewhat predictable. It was a book written with the purpose to inspire loyalty to America during World War I. The book puts the German enemy in a bad light. However, I enjoyed the book. It was representative of the literature written in a more nationalistic era. Ruth Fielding was portrayed as a likable girl. She was smart, brave, and lady-like. This series of books sets an ideal for young ladies to be empowered and be classy at the same time. This is a noble goal in this age of hedonism.I bought this book because my friend's daughter is named Ruth Fielding. She is a delightful girl who has gone through some trials and tribulations, not unlike the protagonist of Emerson's children's novels. My wife and I love this young lady and are going to give this book to her for a Christmas present. Our Ruthie is a tough, but classy young lady. Her character traits reminds me of the girl from the Red Mill.

A heartwarming account of the trials and triumphs a hummingbird rehabber encounters while caring for her tiny, fragile patients Before he collided with a limousine, Gabriel, an Anna’s hummingbird with a head and throat cloaked in iridescent magenta feathers, could spiral 130 feet in the air, dive 60 miles per hour in a courtship display, hover, and fly backward. When he arrived in rehab caked in road grime, he was so badly injured that he could barely perch. But Terry Masear, one of the busiest hummingbird rehabbers in the country, was determined to save this damaged bird, who seemed oddly familiar. During the four months that Terry worked with Gabriel, she took in 160 hummingbirds, from a miniature nestling rescued by a bulldog and a fledgling trapped inside a skydiving wind tunnel at Universal CityWalk, to Pepper, a female Anna’s injured on a film set. In their time together, Pepper and Gabriel form a special bond and, together, with Terry’s help, learn to fly again. Woven around Gabriel’s and Pepper’s stories are those of other colorful birds in this personal narrative filled with the science and magic surrounding these fascinating creatures.

Fastest Things on Wings: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood, by Terry Masear

Review “In her endearing new book, FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood, Terry Masear reveals that these birds are not only gorgeous, smart and jaw-dropping masters of flight but also trusting souls that bring out the humanity and love in even the most hard-bitten residents...This is a book about birds that is actually a book about love, and Masear does us a favor by risking heartbreak every day....a powerful story of interspecies communication and trust. The last words of FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS are: ‘I am flying.’ A fitting end to a book that will change forever the way you look at these little birds.” —Los Angeles Times "rewarding for birds and reader alike. This is a charming and lively summertime read, something for the patio or balcony, glass of iced tea at hand, a hummingbird or two zipping around the azaleas." —Dallas Morning News  "a must-read for everyone who enjoys hummingbirds. (Is there anyone who does not fit that category?) Terry Masear is a hummingbird rehabilitator who takes in these tiny injured birds and treats them with great care. Her book, FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS tells about her experiences winning – and occasionally losing – her battles to bring her charges back to health. Although Masear lives in Hollywood and deals with West Coast birds, her stories apply equally to the one species, the ruby-throated hummingbird, we have here. I learned much from this book." —Buffalo News “[a] bright, engrossing debut…Not just for birders, this captivating book brims with warmth, humor, and drama that will have wide appeal.” —Kirkus Reviews, starred review "Encounters with hummingbirds with a variety of personalities have given [Masear] many insightful stories to tell. She has also learned much about the sometimes strange and other times wonderful people of her community, who call her night and day to report orphaned or distressed hummingbirds. Masear is bound to win fans with this passionate memoir." —Booklist "Masear shares an abundance of knowledge about hummingbirds’ mating and feeding habits, their incredible flying abilities and migratory journeys, and what they need to heal and thrive. But her observations about the rescuers are just as interesting. 'You can learn a lot about someone by his reaction to a helpless hummingbird in need of rescue,' she writes. 'In fact, you can find out just about everything you need to know about a person.'" —BirdWatching Magazine "Terry Masear’s charming account of saving hurt and orphaned hummingbirds grabbed my attention from the first paragraph and kept me riveted until the very last page. I loved this artfully woven story and am certain that animal lovers of all ages will as well." —Michele Raffin, author of The Birds of Pandemonium "This rare and lovely book is destined to be a classic. I was riveted, charmed, delighted, devastated, profoundly moved, and taken to a magical place few people ever get to glimpse. It's one of the best books I've ever read about how rehabbers bond with the animals we save." —Stacey O'Brien, author of Wesley the Owl "This book is a delightful read. No one else could write such a wonderful memoir of care, compassion, and delight for these small creatures. Masear’s writing is enthralling and captivating—and I hated for it to end.” —Joanna Burger, author of The Parrot Who Owns Me “Fastest Thing on Wings is an exaltation of hummingbirds, but it’s also the story of Terry Masear’s exceptional heart and heroism in saving these fragile and remarkable creatures.  In her beautiful account, every rescue is a revelation. Hollywood is full of stars, but few shine as brightly as hers.”  —Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO, The Humane Society of the United States  "In this well-written memoir, she tells the story of Gabriel, a male Anna’s Hummingbird rescued from danger in the middle of busy Rodeo Drive, and Pepper, a female Anna’s injured on a film set. Along the way, Masear shares an abundance of knowledge about hummingbirds’ mating and feeding habits, their incredible flying abilities and migratory journeys, and what they need to heal and thrive. But her observations about the rescuers are just as interesting. 'You can learn a lot about someone by his reaction to a helpless hummingbird in need of rescue,' she writes. 'In fact, you can find out just about everything you need to know about a person.'" —BirdWatching "You don’t have to be a bird person in general or a hummingbird person specifically to read this book. You don’t need to know anything about birds at all. The very gifted bird whisperer Terry Masear has you covered. She’s one of California’s hardest-working hummingbird rehabilitators. What she knows about these tiny wonders will leave the average bird lover agog....[you'll] come away with a sense of awe for the tenacity and toughness of these wild animals and their sheer will to survive." —Washington Post   “I cannot believe what a gripping read this is – it’s like the Hunger Games for hummingbirds.” —Robin Young, host of NPR's Here and Now   "I begin with a must-read for everyone who enjoys hummingbirds. (Is there anyone who does not fit that category?) Terry Masear is a hummingbird rehabilitator who takes in these tiny injured birds and treats them with great care. Her book, Fastest Things on Wings, tells about her experiences winning – and occasionally losing – her battles to bring her charges back to health. Although Masear lives in Hollywood and deals with West Coast birds, her stories apply equally to the one species, the ruby-throated hummingbird, we have here. I learned much from this book" —Buffalo News “When Terry Masear, author of THE FASTEST THINGS ON WINGS: Rescuing Hummingbirds in Hollywood rescued a fledgling 12 years ago, she had no idea that she would one day be Hollywood’s go-to hummingbird rehabber, fielding as many as 85 calls a day….[In the book] she explains how one of the smallest, most beautiful birds in the world evolved from dinosaurs; how hummingbirds can experience PTSD; how even rock stars cry over injured hummingbird chicks; and why she suffers from kitchenheimers.” –National Geographic

24 of 24 people found the following review helpful. Touching and uplifting By B. Case I love books about wildlife rescue and rehabilitation, so I was eager to read Terry Masear’s first-hand account of rescuing hummingbirds in Southern California; after all, that’s where I live, and hummingbirds are very common sights in this part of the world. This is the first rescue and rehab book like this I’ve read about birds. I’ve read many about various types of mammals and found everyone endearing and unforgettable. Typically, those books focused on the individual animal being rescued. As a result, you really got close to the animal and the rescuer. I didn’t know what to expect with a book about rescuing hummingbirds. I knew that I loved these awe-inspiring little jewels with jet engines; I’ve been mesmerized by them countless times in my garden. But would these gorgeous and often very aggressive little creatures prove interesting subjects for a full-length book?I needn’t have worried. The book almost instantly worked its way into my heart and I found I could not put it down. I read it almost nonstop and finished it in a little more than 10 hours over two days. The book is filled with warm-hearted stories about these absolutely amazing birds and their equally awesome rescuers. It’s almost all text. There is a small section of black and white photos in the middle.I expected the book to be mainly about the hummingbirds. So, I was surprised to see that actually the lion’s share of the book was devoted to telling about the human rescuers…especially the dedicated people from all different backgrounds, cultures, educational, and economic levels who were willing to drop everything important in their lives to rescue a hummingbird and get it to Masear for emergency care and rehabilitation. I had no idea how uplifting and captivating these humans rescuing hummingbird stories would be. That was the endearing eye-opener about this book.Masear seems to have a natural gift for storytelling. Her stories about the birds and their rescuers come alive off the page. In particular, she has a gift for dialog and remembering exactly how a person talked and presented themselves when they turned up in her life with a hummingbird needing rescuing. When she tells us each story, it is as if we are there when it happens. Of course, she’s able to describe the little hummers with equal skill. I marveled at her incredible memory, but I assume she made detailed written records for each arrival and graduate. There are two very special hummingbirds that carry the arc of the storytelling along though to the end; i.e., it is their stories that make you want to turn the pages to find out what becomes of them. She spreads out the stories of these two birds in bits and pieces throughout the book. Both of these two hummingbirds were especially difficult rehab cases. I had no idea what to expect with the stories about their unique cases, and I refuse to ruin it for you by telling you anything more. The two special hummers are Gabriel and Pepper. By the end of the book, you will know and love them, too. She gives both of these birds personalities and you learn every detail about their trauma, care, and rehabilitation. If you love wildlife rescue and rehabilitation stories, this one is definitely captivating and extremely enjoyable. I can’t think of any way that Masear could have made this book better short of filling it up with expensive full-color photographs.

When she discovers a hummingbird chick fallen from his nest, she contacts Jean Roper, hummingbird rehabilitator extraordinaire. Jean helps her and Terry tells her to call if she needs help. Jean does, and Terry is sucked into the world of hummingbird rehabilitation. In other words, Ms. Masear didn't aspire to this calling. She is a natural storyteller. Her rehab memoir spans the summer of 2008, and includes lots of useful information for hobbyist hummingbirders. She spills all the poop: How Hollywood hummingbirds typically get hurt, hours fielding frantic phone calls, a grueling schedule of feeding the birds she's rehabbing, and cleaning up the mess. Two birds, Gabriel and Pepper, require special attention before they can be released, and you'll not want to see them go.If your mantra is "four parts water, one part sugar", this is a must read. Two wings up!

7 of 7 people found the following review helpful. This story will hum with delight By Connie You don't need to be a hummingbird lover to enjoy this book. Terry Masear's style is fast-paced, engaging and emotive. This story is a combination of memoir, science and nature, sprinkled in with love and devotion for the species. Rescuing hummers is not always joyous, but one can read this book and understand so much about the bird, its habitat and its behaviors that it would be easy to fall in love with these little speed demons. What starts out as one little bird knocked out of a tree from an unknowing tree trimmer turns into a rolling story of hummingbird rescuers in the Los Angeles area and the bonded pair of hummers. Masear describes everything, from bird behavior to bird feeding habits to the kinds of people that rescue these birds and the various rescues in southern California. Who really knew how attracted the birds are to the color red? Who even realized to wash out old hummingbird feeders, that are often beset with a deadly black fungus that can kill a hummingbird? These birds are unique and have personalities, and even when some come across as more territorial than others, this is a fun read and a work of passion for the little bird.

After the death of Judge Kilburn his daughter came back to America. They had been eleven winters in Rome, always meaning to return, but staying on from year to year, as people do who have nothing definite to call them home. Toward the last Miss Kilburn tacitly gave up the expectation of getting her father away, though they both continued to say that they were going to take passage as soon as the weather was settled in the spring. At the date they had talked of for sailing he was lying in the Protestant cemetery, and she was trying to gather herself together, and adjust her life to his loss.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. a glimpse into victorian america By Joshua D. Hamilton I discovered this book at my local Sacramento library. I enjoyed the plot and the relaxed pace of the book. The character of the minister is in close parrallel with Reverend Casey in the Grapes of Wrath. Annie kilburn and Grapes of Wrath would be interesting books to read together in a study of how biblical allegory and communist thought are sometimes woven together. Apart from this aspect, i found the book to be a helpful glance back to the lost era of victorian america and the social realities of life during that time. A great read and powerful book in its own right.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Doing Good Isn't as Easy as It Looks. By mkw William Dean Howells was a socialist, not a communist. Annie Kilburn, his response to Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, examines the complexities of doing good works to help the poor in the United States. Written with Howells' usual ironic humor, Annie Kilburn is a delightful book that leaves the reader pondering the issues Howells raises. Look for references to Dickens' David Copperfield and Bleak House in one of the characters. Funny.

By BBQ Corn Chips This is a very nice book for the price and the amount of pages and detail especially for a hardcover. It has very nice photos, and good information and story about the highlights of the season and the playoffs. It is 128 pages, so you don't get every game highlights and photos. But as a nice summary with info, facts, data and pictures, it is a very nice collectible and memorabilia piece to add to your sports library. It has very good detail and makes a very good reference to the Golden State Warriors 2014-2015 season and playoffs. It is not perfect. It'd be nice if it had even more info and data, or had info on every game and have tons more photos and detailed every player. But, it is only 128 pages and priced economically for everyone to have a good piece in a book. A 500 page book would cost a whole lot more and be less affordable for the majority of fans to purchase. The book is what it is... a very nice color photo book with detail and info of the Warriors 2014-2015 season and the playoffs for the fan to have a very good reference. It is not a complete moment by moment account of everything. It's a very nice summary book with photos at a very nice price. It's hard to find hardcover books in the ones you want to buy sometimes. Paperbacks seem to be the norm nowadays being cheaper to produce. I am glad this is a hardcover. The pages are good and glossy. The price is very nice at under $20. $17.95 at the time I am reviewing it. I recommend the book for the content and it being a hardcover as well as the great price for what you get.

With over 100 illustrations by David Alexander and 80 photographs by Jerry Brannigan of key people and places Burns encountered. Easy to follow routes and walking guides in Edinburgh arranged by area and place/people. Tourist information about each site. Robert Burns came to Edinburgh in November 1786 and stayed for 14 months. His book, Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect, Kilmarnock Edition , went on sale on July 31, 1786 and was an immediate success throughout Scotland. Suddenly,he was being spoken of the length and breadth of the land. His plan to emigrateto Jamaica with any profit from the sales of the book was abandoned. Burns's life was about to change! Dr Thomas Blacklock, known as the Blind Poet, came to know of the book. Blacklock was a much respected poet and critic, acquainted with the cream of literary society in Scotland and he advised Burns to travel to the nation's capital where a larger edition was promised. Blacklock was sure it would have a more universal circulation than "anything else that had been published within his memory". So it was that on November 27, 1786 that Robert Burns, on a borrowed pony, set off on the two-day journey to Edinburgh. It was at the peak of the Scottish Enlightenment. Edinburgh at the time was home to great philosophers, world-renowned economists, engineers, scientists, writers and poets. Enterprise and industry were flourishing. Robert Burns was to find himself thrust into the midst of the social and academic whirlpool that was Edinburgh in 1786, establishing him as a vital part of the Scottish Enlightenment. This book chronicles the places he visited and the brilliant, eccentric, but always fascinating people he met during his stay. Places including Lodge Canongate Kilwinning No. 2, The Kirk of the Canongate, Old Calton Burial Ground, St. Cecilia's Hall, Pear Tree House, The Luckenbooths and many more. People including, The Duchess of Gordon, Lord Monboddo, James (Balloon) Tytler, Bishop John Geddes, (Indian) Peter Williamson and a host more. Learn of his meeting with a young Sir Walter Scott, and - let's not forget - Mrs Agnes McLehose, his Clarinda, and inspiration for Ae Fond Kiss. During the research that went into this book - and connected with it - is the story behind the discovery of a previously unknown portrait of Burns by Alexander Nasmyth, known as the Shaw Burns, after Sir James Shaw, Lord Mayor of London in 1805, who can now be recognised as the single most important benefactor of the Burns family after the death of the poet. Robert Burns left Edinburgh on March 24, 1788. He was only 29. He was to die in Dumfries eight years later at the age of 37.
