By Amazon Customer By "shorter walks" they mean "shorter than a few days walk...Most of the walks detailed in this guide are not so short, and times given are for almost running them, not walking and enjoying the magnificent views... For example - route no.5 - with 20 km in 4h30, or route no.50 - 17 km, with 1560m ascent and the same 1560 descent, in 6h30...Nevertheless, the descriptions and info in this guide is very useful.

Covers the pluses and minuses well. Of course, you must expect that the information, not matter how recent is dated. So it is best to arrive with a plan and perhaps, be ready to modify it on arrival based on new information, weather availability of lodging. Overall a great compendium for planning- used the electronic version=- fine!

The Pothunters, by P. G. Wodehouse

Review "Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever." -Douglas Adams "Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own."-Evelyn Waugh

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Wodeghouse's first novel shows early signs of his genius By A Customer Written in 1902, The Pothunters was the first novel of P.G. Wodehouse's 70-year career. As might be expected, it is somewhat immature, but shows signs of his eventual genius. The Pothunters is set is an English boy's school at the turn of the centurry, an environment Wodehouse was familiar with. As such, it was written with those young readers in mind, and is consequently may not be very interesting to the modern reader. The plot concerns some stolen prizes (the "pots" of the title). As a mystery, the book is not particularly well done, but the characterizations of the heroic though mischieveous boys would appeal to the young readers of the time.As is the case in many of Wodehouse's works, characterization and plot are secondary to his amusing language and style. There are signs throughout of this development, which alone makes the book readable today.Generally, one gets the impression that the book was written quickly, almost dashed off without the careful polish exhibited in Wodehouse's later works. Generally, the book would probably appeal most to a Wodehouse collector.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful. The Pothunters - Wodehouse's First Novel By Dunning Idle There is a glowing review appended as an afterword to the story in this novel about schoolboy adventures in England. That review would be 5 stars, and I would probably agree, except I want to save 5 stars for later Wodehouse works such as Luck of the Bodkins. I discovered Wodehouse because Douglas Adams praises him in his final book, The Salmon of Doubt. I love Wodehouse and think of him as an older, even more English version of Adams. In Pothunters, some trophies are stolen from a boarding school, and the adventures of the boys involved are intricate, extremely well written, and quite entertaining. Wodehouse peppers his prose with extremely clever phrasing, which causes me to laugh out loud. In the Pothunters I only laughed once per chapter. In Luck of the Bodkins it was every other page. Still, this book is worth the reading!

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. " A good, well produced edition for the Wodehouse completist By John Macossay Early P.G. Wodehouse from when he was still writing "school stories." A good, well produced edition for the Wodehouse completist. If you are not already very familiar with the writings of P.G. Wodehouse, however, this is not the place to start. Begin with one of the Bertie and Jeeves novels.

Can't really read them with any enjoyment; the poems are paragraphs, revisions in the middle, numbers in the middle; unless you are well acquainted with Wordsworth before downloading this---one would miss the beauty of his poetry. The book is a delightful light hearted tale of one man's lifelong journey seeking that elusive boating paradise. It is written from the perspective of a person who has not made a living on the water but is just there because he enjoys being on the water. From rivers to oceans and from the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterways (ICWW) to the Gulf Intracoastal Waterways (GIWW) it has been all just part of one man’s life long boating memoirs. This edition is the smaller one with fewer photographs and is in black and white, otherwise this is the same edition as the one in color but less expensive! There are passages about the Intracoastal waterways and a chapter about pets on board, the delights and the problems they bring. It is meant to entertain anyone who loves the water and all the things that go with boating. All of the stories really happened, which makes the book even more interesting.

Boating: a Life's Journey (Beach Edition), by Dr. Terry V Kimmel

About the Author The author has been a lifelong boater and water enthusiast. Born in 1943 and still kicking, he has spent his life on or near the water. His first memories of the water were when his mother taught him to swim after school at Miami Beach. That was in the first grade. He later became a life guard at another beach in Maryland. His love of the water has carried him through many different types of boats. He has gone down rapids in a canoe. He has crossed the ocean in a sailboat. He has rowed wooden boats and driven motor yachts in the ocean and gulf. Eventually he was awarded a 100 ton Masters license from the US Coast Guard. Not only did he enjoy the many different boats he owned along the way but also the people he met. One day while recording the day's events in his log a guest said, "Why don't you write these adventures into a book. I think they would make a great story." Terry Kimmel received a BA from the University of Maryland and later a DDS from their Dental School. After a tour of duty with the USAF he moved to the Annapolis, Maryland, area and opened a dental practice. Right before he retired he had a boat built for his wife and himself to go cruising. Ten years later he had a heart attack. While he was convalescing he put this book together from his log notes and told the stories as his guest had suggested. We are told all these stories are true but they did not necessarily happen in the order they appear in his book. He also mixes many stories of this childhood adventures on the water and the antics of some of his pets on board as a counter balance to the tales of his trips in the ICW and the Bahamas in later years.

The story is entertaining, interesting and informative. Coach Rob Bell allows his skill at teaching these young players to seamlessly lift off the page and into the imagination. Unlike a lot of informative sports books, "Winning Futsal" combines a story with needed information for futsal novices to easily understand. This is a wonderful book and I recommend it to anyone who is interested in coaching futsal, plays futsal, or has a player in their life who loves futsal.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. Great for the 1st time Futsal coach By Amazon Customer Enjoyed the book, simple and effective sessions outlined with good descriptions. As a first time Futsal coach, I found a lot of information in a short time. Yes there could have been more, other formations and more details in rotations and skills, but as a start, it helped a lot.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. This book is the best futsal book I've read and the best how-to book ... By Anonymous Reader This book is the best futsal book I've read and the best how-to book that applies to soccer I've read in a long time. It makes me wish I were still coaching soccer because we used futsal play as small sided training and that is one reason we tended to dominate possession. I imagine we could've progressed to all 4 dribbles (I have some other pet moves) as well as the propeller (aka butterfly rotation, aka basic 2-2 rotation) but everyone aged out in the blink of an eye.Anyway, getting back to the book, it's concise, well-written, easy to read, and will give most coaches and players just enough material and "secrets" to both get started and become very good. The author provides advice on:- basic shielding, technical turns and dribbles that can get every player up to basic proficiency- tactics for 2-2 open play- tactics for 2-2 set play- checks and other off-ball runs- basic GK knowledge- drills to learn all the aboveThat should be plenty for anyone to get started. There is plenty of more advanced material on YouTube on more rotations, moves, 3-1 tactics, plays, etc., but I never came across a book to help teams get started. It's a book for coaches of kids playing futsal but I wish my adult futsal teammates would read it.

Magic Bat Day (Hometown All Stars Book 2), by Kevin Christofora

Review "I’m an author, but my enthusiasm for Kevin’s series doesn’t come from the mind of a writer. It comes from the heart of a grandfather. Reading these books with my grandson I watched him soak up the facts about the game they still call America’s pastime. When we were done reading, I launched into a few of my own “when I was a boy just about your age” baseball stories, and watched his eyes get wider, his grin get broader, and our connection get deeper. It made me wonder ― are these books for kids? Or were they written for parents and grandparents who want to bond with their kids? Thank you, Kevin." Marshall Karp Author, co-author for James Patterson "Kevin is right on the mark! More green and less screen. Kids and parents need this! Get out of the house, play ball and read a book together at bed time! His desire to teach Honor-Respect and Community shines through on this first book. I can’t wait to see the rest of the series." Leon Gast Director, Producer, Academy Award Winner; When We Were Kings “Terrific idea beautifully executed. I only wish this series was available when my kids were baseball neophytes. Heck I wish I had them when guys like DiMaggio and King Kong Keller were my heroes.” Charley Rosen Fox Sports NBA Analyst and Author “This series offers its readers a chance to see great, often historic, sports moments. It eliminates the need to sift through ten poorly written books to find one worth reading. You finish one and can't wait to start the next. Truly enjoyable.” Bob Salomon “A Glove of Their Own”, author, coach Little League is more than baseball. It teaches character and builds leaders in our community. The Hometown All Stars capture that essence, what a great series this will be! Nick Gantner District Administrator, Little League “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents, the “Hometown All Stars” series has created an opportunity for parents and their children to read together.” Elohim Pacheco Kindergarten Teacher "Kevin Christofora cares about kids and baseball like few others. His Hometown All Stars series reveal splendid character studies and moral purpose ... and the essence of fun and teamwork." Dave Kaplan Director, Yogi Berra Museum & Learning Center

About the Author Kevin Christofora began his career into the professional world with a position at Calvin Klein Cosmetics in 1992; he worked as a package engineer, working in new product development and maintaining all responsibilities for production of existing components of the Obsession Fragrance brand. From there, he moved to Revlon and Prescriptives at the parent company of Estée Lauder. More than a pastime, Kevin loves working with the children. He prides himself on teaching them that it’s about more than a game: it’s about honor, respect, and community. As president of the league, he enjoys working with the parents and community members that all have one main interest: the kids. As he puts it, “Mountain Valley Little League is real fun, real life, and real baseball, with no substitutions”. Written for children ages three to five, Kevin wrote The Hometown All Stars as a “bedtime story” to get kids interested in the national pastime again. His goal in writing this book was to get kids out of the house and onto the field – “more green, less screen!” He believes in the valuable lessons that children learn from playing the game: teamwork, discipline, strategy, and thinking before they act. In addition, he wants to bring back the joy of being outdoors and playing, that kids in recent years have lost.

Great Reinforcement Tool By Norm Goldman Once again the team of author Kevin Christofora and illustrator Dale Tangeman have combined their wonderful talents crafting their second book in the Hometown All Stars series, Magic Bat Day which concentrates on learning the fundamentals of baseball batting. The picture book kicks off with lively carton photos of the principal characters including the principal one, Nick.Nick is all keyed up in taking part in his second day of baseball practice as he rises early and dresses himself. He can hardly wait to show off his new uniform to his classmates. His mother can't believe the change that has transpired with Nick and tells him he is acting like a big boy! A cartoon baseball image appears on the top left hand corner of page 3 where we read that Nick's coach has informed him and his teammates that they will all wear their uniforms to school to promote team spirit. At school Nick dreams about playing baseball and when he lunches on hots dogs and apple pie, he is reminded at being at the baseball park.Once school is out Nick races to the magical baseball field with its perfectly mowed lawn and white lines, similar to what he had seen on television when watching the pros play ball. While the team is assembling on the field, the coach blows his whistle and informs them that the order of the day will be learning the correct way to hit the ball. He also holds up a baseball card of one of the greatest hitters of all time, Babe Ruth, after which he tells the players that they will find their own magic bat, learn how to hit the ball, and perhaps one day will be just like the Babe.At the conclusion of the warm ups, the team is split into two groups and Nick goes to the dugout to pick up a bat that feels good. The players follow the coach to the practice area and while walking with him, they are told that hitting and batting are similar words and everyone can be a hitter and batter.Circles are created with spray paint, where Nick's teammates are told to place their feet as it keeps their bodies facing the correct direction. Every player is assigned their own hitting station and each receives a helmet, batting tee, and a bucket of balls. After putting his helmet on, Nick grabs his bat, places his feet in the circle and is now ready to receive his first batting lesson. He is told to make two fists with his hands and line is knuckles in a straight row, after which the coach pulls out a black marker and draws a black line on his hands, so he won't forget. The fundamentals of batting are clearly explained in a few steps including putting the bat on your shoulder, relaxing, raising the bat up to get ready to hit, and finally taking a swing.Disappointingly, Nick misses his first attempt. A different ball is then placed on the batting tee with a black dot. The coach also adjusts Nick's elbow telling him that when he swings, he is to stare at the black dot, and then slam it. Lo and behold to his amazement, Nick's bat connects with the ball making the coolest sound.Praising Nick, the coach asks him to do it again. This is followed by the entire team hitting dozens of balls. After blowing his whistle to end the practice, the coach asks if everyone had fun, did they find their magic bats, did anyone hit the ball really far and what was their favorite part of the day. Everyone's parents help out by picking up the equipment and returning it to the shed so that the coach can devote his full attention the the kids. What stands out in this picture book is the realization by Christofora that kids are easily bored when confronted by jargon and technicalities. Consequently, he stays away from confusing explanations and complexities while presenting in bit-sized chunks a simple step-by-step process in teaching batting and hitting to kids. The book also serves as an excellent compliment and reinforcement of the skills kids would receive when actually taking part in live baseball practices.Christofora is well matched with Tangeman whose illustrations effectively reflect the tone of the story and the lessons taught. This instructive book has the added benefit of inviting us to join in the practices and remember when we too were small learning how to hit a ball.*I received a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review.

By Glenda This Indie approved reader is written for ages 3-7 and should be considered "a primary" in acquainting children with the game of baseball. Magic Bat Day is actually the second day of practice, so, first, everything that was learned in the first book was repeated--you got it! Those exercises we all love to do! So they are repeated every day to learn them...and those same exercises will always be done before a big game! The Coach announced that he would be teaching them how to hit the ball. But first, each player had to pick out their own bat! First, though, the Coach showed them a baseball card of Babe Ruth and shared his history--letting them know that he was a role model that they should look toward, and that they could maybe someday play like him...Nick, who narrates the story headed over with the rest of the team to find the perfect, perhaps magical bat, to use. Then the coach led them to the practice area where individual hitting stations were already established. Billy Ball showed up to explain why two white circles had been drawn near each hitting station...Do you know why?Everybody was surprised that the Coach used a black marker to show how their knuckles were to be placed on the bat! Then when Nick tried to make his first hit, he missed! The coach used that marker again and Nick was able to make his first hit! Each day the Coach called the team members together and talked to them about the day, asking what they liked best.I continue to be so impressed with these stories and already wonder what will be taught next! The coach reveals in his actions his goals for teaching the game correctly, to allow the members to participate fully and equally, to gain feedback for future reference, and most of all to go slowly and at the pace the individual member needs, with help provided as needed...and to inspire their team in sportsmanship, good morale as well as acting as a wonderful role model...Readers, you can't help but enjoy these books. While being very educational in the time-honored step-by-step process of learning, the author has inserted fun stops, such as another game of finding the balls in a page...or letting the kids think they must have hit a million balls in their practice... There are places for autographs of favorite players...and a continuous check of what new words have been learned and remembered. For instance, do you know what Babe Ruth's full name is? I sure didn't! So baseball trivia and history of the game is also coming into the learning process...No doubt about it--This series could be a must-read for many children out there! All you have to ask is if they want to..."Play Ball!"GABixlerReviewsPrint Copy provided for Review

By Anita Lock Next in The Hometown All Stars series, Magic Bat Day focuses on Nick's second day of baseball practice. Excited to promote team spirit, Nick and his teammates get to wear their baseball uniforms to school. His enthusiasm spills over into every activity at school as Nick anticipates practice and wonders what new things he'll be learning. And learn he does as coach introduces Nick and his team to the proper techniques to batting. The Christofora-Tangeman team hit another home run in Nick's adventures with baseball. Young readers and parents who are familiar with Nick's Very First Day of Baseball—the first book in the series—will also be familiar with the fun-filled format of that follows in Christofora's first person narrative. Including Billy Ball's facts and questions, there is also a hidden-picture page abounding in baseballs, a trivia page, an autograph page, and a short list of new words learned. Once again Tangeman's artistic and playful images create magic to Christofora's baseball-laden text. Most notable scenes are a stunning Babe Ruth baseball card and hilarious two-page portrayal of Nick's batting concentration. As envisioned for his innovative interactive series, Christofora's mantra of 'less screen, more green' speaks loudly to how "he wants to bring back the joy of being outdoors and playing, that kids in recent years have lost" and his firm belief that children learn valuable lessons, such as teamwork, discipline, strategy, and thinking before they act—just from playing the game. Geared specifically for the three to seven age range, there is much more in store for fans of The Hometown All Stars. Stay tuned!Anita LockFreelance Book Reviewer

When Chloe Patrick, the diva/terrorist-in-chief of her high school, meets her untimely demise while hanging Christmas decorations outside her Ohio house, her plans for the Class of 99’s 15-year reunion subsequently land in the laps of best friends Maggie and Rachel. Maggie Dolan is the over-achieving, gung-ho former class president who still lives a mile from the high school. Rachel Atkinson has spent the past fifteen years distancing herself from everything about her teenage life, including the small town she deserted without ever looking back. Told in parallel storylines—one taking place in the glorious 1990s of Backstreet Boys, Varsity Blues, and scrunchies; the other in present day— Good Riddance uses humor and heart to remind us all about the power of friendship, the lure of lost love, and hell of high school. And that sometimes you actually can go home again (even when it’s the last thing you want to do).

Before you think I’m crazy, death in its self is definitely not funny but, the explanation of how she died is.Another bit of hilarity would be the class renunion motto “We are sexy! We are fine! We’re the class of 99!”. Egotistical much? All of the core characters are bright and seem very real. Each person’s personality shines through and they flesh out rather well. These are people that you would want to hang out with. This is the group of friends you (hopefully) had in high school. Their easy banter and eye-roll worthy sarcasm will have you laughing. The story its self isn’t all that original but that’s not really a negative. All readers have their standby genres that we like to be somewhat predictable and reliably good. This book definitely fits into that category. It reads like the romantic comedies we all know and love. Girl makes mistake. Girl unexpectedly must face mistake. Girl rights mistake. Add flashbacks to the high school experience and current day consequences…..well that’s a story I’ll read any day of the week.I would describe it as a feel-good book.Even though I was by no means a high school senior in 1999 (I was 11 ha!) I still got the 90’s references and guffawed more than once. One of the things that is very original about this book is the writers. They have never met in person. That’s crazy! How did they manage to write such a flawless story?! Color me impressed. In conclusion, the book is a fun read. It delivers those always needed warm fuzzies and ends in the happiest way for everyone. Well, everyone except Chloe Patrick. To see my full review, check out my blog AlliesOpinions on Wordpress!

Delightful, insightful, and highly entertaining By Honolulubelle Favorite Quotes:“Aside from the early chatter on the event’s just-created Facebook page – ‘We are sexy! We are fine! We’re the class of ’99!’ – not much had been discussed about the reunion yet.”“Chloe Patrick wasn’t just the school’s reigning terrorist-in-chief, she was also a diva in training.”“Rachel and Maggie had to literally bite their tongues as the organist launched into a hymn-tastic version of Celine Dion’s ‘My Heart Will Go On.’ As Courtney and Chandler began their tone-deaf duet…”“She doted on her daughter like she was some kind of blue ribbon pony, don’t you remember? She’s nuts.”My Review:This review could be accurate and complete with one sentence simply stating – This story was perfectly done… because it was. I adored this tale - beginning to end - as only a person who had endured their formative years in a tiny, petty, rural, inbred community with more than their share of untalented yet influential divas and mean girls could. This story with its humorous observations and uncanny insights was well paced, and had an excellent voice that resonated through me. I wanted to fist pump, leap from my chair, slam my kindle, and yell ‘YES!’ Okay, okay… I would never slam my beloved kindle… but I put that bit in there for dramatic emphasis.I smiled, chortled, and barked my way through this delightful and unfailingly entertaining narrative. The characters were lovable, intriguing, quirky, fun, clever, and fully fleshed out. I loved their sweet and witty banter and felt as if I knew them so well I could recognize them on the street. The writing was crisp, clever, engrossing, and wickedly funny. The writers have aptly captured the energy, hopefulness, desperation, exasperation, shortsightedness, and arrogance of that confusing and exciting ‘coming of age period’ of high school. I could almost smell the pencil lead, sweat socks, acrid science lab chemicals, and rusting lockers.

I absolutely adored the characters and am already sad that I've finished it By Jaime Brumfield This was one of the most enjoyable books I've read in some time. I absolutely adored the characters and am already sad that I've finished it. The story was wonderfully nostalgic and reminded me so much of times and people from my own high school memories. I laughed out loud several times and loved the dialogue back and forth between the characters and all of the references to the late '90s. I think that one of the greatest gifts from reading is when a book can trigger feelings in its reader, and this one certainly did. It was a great way to reflect on one's own high school experience and friendships. Well done and I can't wait for the next one!

The back cover was bent and looked old. The book wasn't written very well. Besides the grammatical errors the content wasn't as entertaining as I would've liked. Overall this was a bad purchase.

However, in this book, Andrew Ward tells about some legendary matches, some of which happened back in the 1800's. If you like cricket, get this book!

Shortlisted for the EDP-Jarrold East Anglian Book Awards At the centre of Emery's third collection are a series of narrative poems that reveal an astonishing range of personas, from the set of Mission Impossible, an extra from Gojira, porn stars, bombers and executioners - even Charles Bukowski turns up to take a leak. There are Pennine journeys, war zones, the Norfolk coast, the Suffolk coast, riots, bad hotel rooms and crazy conventions. Even the secret life of peas. Interspersed among all these are poems concerning the mysterious 'M'.

The Departure, by Chris Emery

Review The narrative poems are like snapshots of longer stories, like watching ten minutes of a film - you want to know more. The 'location poems' feature such vivid imagery, so real that you're right there - "a charcoal pushbike leaning on the door's black velour". Emery shows no sticking rigidly to poetic form, taking the theme of departures around a tour of haiku, sonnets, couplets, free verse. It's all here. The words are working hard - "the day moon is a wok", "the sea's womb bursts" - painting a vivid picture in your mind's eye. The breadth of this collection is tremendous, but my absolute favourite is the title poem 'The Departure', about leaving yourself and diving into your art. -- Michelle Teasdale Winning Words These words matter: these contexts, these agonised, pained, joyous, hilarious worlds. -- Catherine Edmunds Goodreads There are moments of great lucidity and philosophical insight in Emery's poetry, and a vocabulary born from experience that doesn't cry pretentious. There is grit, but not for its own sake, and a clean intelligence lies beneath "the dirt the dirt the dirt" of The Bukowskis that makes way for the brave political admonitions ('The Destroyers Convention' and 'Guest Starring'). It is also nice to see a dialogue poem in the form of 'Carl's Job'; these are rare and, to me, pave a way forward in poetry. Emery's excellent execution of this form delivers a haunting exchange of movie-talk, and shows the range of his literary prowess:"'I've no further plans on killing' I said. 'Those days are done.' / 'Let me tell you, Bud,' said Carl. 'Those days are sitting here now.'" -- Philippe Blenkiron Ink, Sweat & Tears Chris Emery's 'Departures' has affinities with those of John Hartley-Williams. A single poem can pile up seemingly unrelated images with an impact derived not from an understanding of the poem's logical surface connections, what the seventeenth century described as wit, but from the connections that Emery's images make with our emotions. A lazy reaction would be to lump him with the more overt surrealist procedures of Hartley-Williams, but I would prefer to describe his imagery sensually associative akin to the work of Elytis or Pablo Neruda. -- James Sutherland-Smith The Bow-Wow Shop A collection where linguistic invention and imagination combine in poems with a dazzling range of feeling never less than a true entertainment. -- James Sutherland-Smith The Bow-Wow Shop Studded with richly strange images and ideas, the poems, like the church bells which 'invert the town', in 'Sunday Fathers', are often skewed and unsettling: hat stands, 'wrists of ice'; snails, 'death's pale eccentrics'. -- Ellen Cranitch Poetry London Most of Emery's poems share an immediacy, a measured brashness, but there is nothing especially uniform about this collection: there is a 'cowboy song', a poem dedicated to a Victorian hangman, a visit to the frontline of a warzone, each poem shining a different kind of light on a different world of hope, or pain, or calm, or irony, or fortitude, or beauty. -- Rory Waterman The Times Literary Supplement Chris Emery drops you right into his poems/world, and once in you have very little chance to orientate yourself before being assaulted by the next image or poem; voices and fragments of lives hurtle past you leaving behind ghosts on the retina, neurons fired and blipping beyond the moment. The Parrish Lantern The poems made me feel and put images in my head, but I never understood why I felt that way, or how these quicksilver pictures fitted into the narratives. There is something about the quality of the images ('Snails' silently drowned in "forest tears" and awkward 'Sunday Fathers' "wasting time by the swings") and of the atmospheres conjured up (for me the book as a whole has a feeling of carparks and gritty sodium lights, isn't that odd!) that tells me I should trust Chris Emery and that there are more treasures to be found. George Szirtes, states on the back cover that the poems in this collection:" are like highly compressed short stories that we enter at high speed. Once in, the place is full of vivid detail keeping our head turning."I've taken this to mean that Chris Emery drops you right into his poems/world, and once in you have very little chance to orientate yourself before being assaulted by the next image or poem; voices and fragments of lives hurtle past you leaving behind ghosts on the retina, neurons fired and blipping beyond the moment. Again taking Szirtes idea of "compressed stories" I recently wrote a post on a microfiction collection, and stated that I wasn't sure where the difference between prose poetry and microfiction lie and that "like prose poetry, microfiction appears to be loose, possibly random paragraphs and to use everyday language, although it is heightened, making every word placed - placed with a specific purpose - as if it were a puzzle & could have only been placed there, would only fit there." , this description seems to fit Chris's poetry and even though he's far to adventurous to remain in one form when he could be exploring Sonnets, Couplets, Haiku's or free verse, I think the description an apt one.On leaving Wale Obelisk (for Jen).Did we shuck our suits that leaf-dense noon?Leave serious careers in lemon light, the high clouds, early swallows, the day moonweakened, nothing farmed, nothing tightabove the summer marriage of grasses, and all that luscious time receding inthe corporate years' climbing excesses, just a vacancy before the children? We made a kind of love pledge there. It leaves youin chromatic episodes like thisdoesn't it? Not quite nostalgia but whocould have imagined ageing like this?We had climbed up to lie on the piled hay,the tow-coloured earth all nice and neat, what with everything that's come our waywe're still breathing in that smashed-up wheatOn researching for this post, I read that this poet's work is characterised by a dystopian vision of the world, having read only this and Dr Mephisto, I can say there is an element of that, but if Chris paints the world as a dystopian, he paints it with a humour that cuts giant swathes through the darkness, highlighting the dissonance in modern living and with a language that makes me smile, makes me laugh, then makes me want to read again.

Edmunds I first read this book a week ago on the East Coast Mainline from Darlington to London Kings Cross (`Look left, a cobbled lane and a crypt of hats'). I read it again from St Pancras to Paris Gare du Nord (`above the summer marriage of grasses'), and again from Paris Montparnasse to Niort (`All the forks, the platters, the cruet set: everything is dancing.'). I waited several days, and read it again, three times on the return journey; the last time, back to front so that I ended with `Snails'. Those snails! (`Why are they all called Tony or Erasmus or King Nacre?') I love this poem. It opens the book and encapsulates all that for me is so wonderful about Chris Emery's poetry: the wit, the connections, the sheer joy in words and what they can do, the shock of unexpected juxtapositions, the extraordinary insight into the ordinary, the leap beyond the mundane into the terrifying, the ineffable logic - and Droylsden. Okay, Droylsden's not actually mentioned in the snail poem, but does appear elsewhere, more than once. For those nervous of the dreaded D word, I should mention the somewhat more genteel Southwold is there too, so you can relax. Temporarily. Where else? Bromley, of course (my husband has this theory that you'll read/see mention of Bromley at least once a week. I've no idea why this should be, but remember Janice from Bromley in that ad on the telly not so long ago?) plus Burnley, various Manchester locations, the Wale Obelisk, Celaenae (an ancient city of Phrygia - yes I had to look it up), Cromer, Cambridge and across the pond to the States for a quick tour, then back again to the penultimate poem: a glorious concoction of observations made in a nameless motel that had me spluttering with laughter at its grossness.George Szirtes, on the back cover blurb, says these poems `are like highly compressed short stories that we enter at high speed.' This is it exactly, and herein lies Emery's skill. When you write a novel, you're generally advised to lose the first few chapters of the early drafts so that in the finished product the reader is plunged straight into the heart of the tale without having to wade through endless waffle as the writer introduces the world they've created. Emery shortcuts this process with a vengeance. A lesser poet would ease the reader gently into the scene; would explain the settings and who these people are - particularly creepy Carl - but if Carl had been carefully introduced, the impact of the poem would be lost in the sensory dilution of too much guff. Emery's words are richly textured but never over-baked; never there just to say `Look at me! Don't I look good on the page!' These words matter: these contexts, these agonised, pained, joyous, hilarious worlds.A brief word about the book as an artefact. I'm an artist. I like things of beauty: tactile things, things that feel good, smell good, things with colours I can almost taste. This gorgeously bound hardback volume is a thing to possess, to handle - to ogle even - regardless of the poetry inside. That it contains some of the best poetry I've read in a long time is a welcome bonus, of course. So I arrived home from my train journey wanderings, my mind buzzing with the new sights, sounds and experiences of my trip abroad, and promptly wrote three poems. I like to think these were influenced in some way by my reading matter; that something of Emery's skill and way with words may have rubbed off. I certainly now have a determination to raise my game as a poet. I've always played with words, enjoyed words, enjoyed manipulating my readers' minds and emotions - but I could be doing so much more. I'm feeling inspired. Thank you, Chris Emery. I'm not going to wait for the next long train journey to read `The Departure' again. It's sitting beside me as I type this review, and is going to stay by my side for a long while yet.

THE POITEVINS. The history of France in 1792 has been too fully written, and too generally read to leave the novelist any excuse for describing the state of Paris at the close of the summer of that year. It is known to every one that the palace of Louis XVI was sacked on the 10th of August. That he himself with his family took refuge in the National Assembly, and that he was taken thence to the prison of the Temple.

About the Author Anthony Trollope was a Victorian-era English author best known for his satirical novel The Way We Live Now, a criticism of the greed and immorality he witnessed living in London. In 1851 Trollope was travelling the English countryside for work when was inspired with the plot for The Warden, the first of six novels in what would become his famous The Chronicles of Barsetshire series. Trollope eventually settled in London and over the next thirty years published a prodigious body of work, including Barsetshire novels such as Barchester Towers and Doctor Thorne, as well as numerous other novels and short stories. 25 of 26 people found the following review helpful. La Vendée By H. Curtler Trollope is one of the most prolific writers who ever set pen to paper, surely. For that reason, perhaps, he is underrated. His novels are always lively and understated: he has his sights on a target much harder to hit than mere entertainment. And for readers who want to read well-written stories and, at the same time, be asked to think about serious social issues, Trollope is a must. This novel may be his best.La Vendée is an historical novel that focuses on the peasant revolt after the French revolution, and, as usual, Trollope works romance into his theme. But his "take" on the revolt, and on war itself, is truly profound. He forces the reader to consider the possibility that war in inherently wrong and that nothing is really accomplished in even the most seemingly justified of wars. He clearly sides with the royalists, though he can see both sides of the complicated political situation. And he wonders aloud, and with increasingly disturbing insights, whether all the death and carnage accomplished anything worthwhile. This is an outstanding novel.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Masterful Blend By Peter E. Gallaher La Vendee is a different kind of Romance; a true one. Knowing the bare and brutal truths may lead one to think they are going to read a grim tale. This is anything but that, though grimness enough lurks throughout in the plans and policies of the French Republic. But, Trollope stays away from sensationalism and blood, concentrating instead on goodness, faith, honor and honesty; and the heroism and loyalty of ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. Today's more cynical and worldly reader might find him too naive, but don't be deceived. He tells a story here factual in every important way, of ordinary citizens whose extraordinary courage and faith very nearly changed history. That is the unifying idea he builds upon as he brings us gently to the end, no good work is ever in vain if undertaken for the sake of its pure goodness. The novel is faithful to the Catholicism of the Vendeeans as well as to their royalist loyalties. On both accounts it illuminates a time and culture some might find foolishly childish, simple and primitive. Our current culture and its values are very different and would seem scandalous to Trollope's characters; possibly even to the author himself.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. but very good. The characters are typically Trollopian By Eleanor Bellett An early Trollope novel, unusual in being historical, but very good. The characters are typically Trollopian, especially the women. The battle descriptions are clear and one can picture the situations and flow of the battles easily - unlike the work of many historians who just seem to confuse the reader. It is based on a true story and it is worth looking up the background on Wikipedia.

I am going to tell you next about the most famous nation in the world. Going westward from Greece another peninsula stretches down into the Mediterranean. The Apennine Mountains run like a limb stretching out of the Alps to the south eastward, and on them seems formed that land, shaped somewhat like a leg, which is called Italy.

It is not a digitized copy in modern typeset, but actual copies of the original pages of an old book. I was terribly saddened upon finding that several pages are blurred completely and not legible at all. This will not do. I wonder why the editors cannot make careful changes to fix this problem. I will be exchanging my copy for another with the hope that only this copy had blurred pages.
