'Where have I seen that face before?' said a voice. Tony Graham looked up from his bag. 'Hullo, Allen,' he said, 'what the dickens are you up here for?' 'I was rather thinking of doing a little boxing. If you've no objection, of course.' 'But you ought to be on a bed of sickness, and that sort of thing. I heard you'd crocked yourself.'

The Pothunters, by P. G. Wodehouse

Review "Wodehouse is the greatest comic writer ever." -Douglas Adams "Wodehouse's idyllic world can never stale. He will continue to release future generations from captivity that may be more irksome than our own."-Evelyn Waugh

About the Author Sir Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (P. G. Wodehouse) was an English humorist and writer best known for his Jeeves and Blandings Castle novels. Educated at boarding schools, Wodehouse turned to writing at a young age, demonstrating great skill at humorous sketches and musical lyrics. He continued to write part-time while pursuing, at the behest of his father, a career in banking, and successfully contributed numerous pieces to Punch, Vanity Fair, and The Daily Express, among other publications. In addition to his literary work, Wodehouse was incorporated into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in recognition of his collaboration with Cole Porter on Anything Goes, his lyrics to the song Bill from Show Boat, and his work on the musicals Rosalie and The Three Musketeers.

While interned along with other British citizens in Germany during the Second World War, Wodehouse made a series of radio broadcasts for which he was accused of being a collaborator; and, although later cleared of the charges, he never returned to England. His work has influenced many other writers including Evelyn Waugh, Rudyard Kipling, J. K. Rowling, and John Le Carr?. P. G. Wodehouse died in 1975 at the age of 93.

11 of 12 people found the following review helpful. Wodeghouse's first novel shows early signs of his genius By A Customer Written in 1902, The Pothunters was the first novel of P.G. Wodehouse's 70-year career. As might be expected, it is somewhat immature, but shows signs of his eventual genius. The Pothunters is set is an English boy's school at the turn of the centurry, an environment Wodehouse was familiar with. As such, it was written with those young readers in mind, and is consequently may not be very interesting to the modern reader. The plot concerns some stolen prizes (the "pots" of the title). As a mystery, the book is not particularly well done, but the characterizations of the heroic though mischieveous boys would appeal to the young readers of the time.As is the case in many of Wodehouse's works, characterization and plot are secondary to his amusing language and style. There are signs throughout of this development, which alone makes the book readable today.Generally, one gets the impression that the book was written quickly, almost dashed off without the careful polish exhibited in Wodehouse's later works. Generally, the book would probably appeal most to a Wodehouse collector.

The Pothunters - Wodehouse's First Novel By Dunning Idle There is a glowing review appended as an afterword to the story in this novel about schoolboy adventures in England. That review would be 5 stars, and I would probably agree, except I want to save 5 stars for later Wodehouse works such as Luck of the Bodkins. I discovered Wodehouse because Douglas Adams praises him in his final book, The Salmon of Doubt. I love Wodehouse and think of him as an older, even more English version of Adams. In Pothunters, some trophies are stolen from a boarding school, and the adventures of the boys involved are intricate, extremely well written, and quite entertaining. Wodehouse peppers his prose with extremely clever phrasing, which causes me to laugh out loud. In the Pothunters I only laughed once per chapter. In Luck of the Bodkins it was every other page. Still, this book is worth the reading!

A good, well produced edition for the Wodehouse completist. If you are not already very familiar with the writings of P.G. Wodehouse, however, this is not the place to start. Begin with one of the Bertie and Jeeves novels.
