Clarke had no interest in trophy climbs” and never did ascend many of BC’s highest peaks. On the other hand, he explored more virgin territory and racked up more first ascents than any other climberperhaps more than any climber who ever lived.Although he came to be honoured far and wide and is one of the few mountaineers to be awarded the Order of Canada, he was a modest man who pursued his passion without fanfare, frequently embarking on gruelling expeditions into unknown territory by himself. His reputation spread and grew to legendary proportions, not just owing to the prodigious scale of his achievements, but because of the way he carried them outhe travelled light and scorned technology, wearing cotton long johns and eating homemade granola. He dedicated his life to exploring the numberless, nameless peaks of the Coast Range and worked at odd jobs just long enough to pay for the next season’s climbing. He was charismatic and famously attractive to women, but none were able to compete with his first love and he didn’t marry until he was almost fifty. Always a popular lecturer, in his later years he devoted his considerable energies to the cause of environmental education. After he succumbed to cancer in 2003, the BC government named Mount John Clarke in his honourfitting recognition for the man who had himself named many BC mountains.John Clarke: Explorer of the Coast Mountains covers this remarkable life from beginning to end, examining Clarke through his own words and pictures as well as through the words of his many friends. All agree it was an honour to have known him, and readers will find it equally inspiring to meet him through these pages.

John Clarke's first recorded ascents of peaks (in the Coast Mountains) located between Vancouver and Bella Coola. Peaks are colour-coded to indicate when Clarke first climbed them (green-1960s, blue-1970s, red-1980s, black-1990s). Clarke also made roughly 180 first ascents of peaks located north of Bella Coola and south of Dease Lake, which are not shown here.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Intrepid Explorer of the BC Coast Range By Stephen Bezruchka I had heard about John Clarke decades ago, doing extensive climbs and traverses, mostly alone, in the remotest parts of the BC Coast Range that he wrote up for the Canadian Alpine Journal. I wanted to read about this unusual character who forgoes a career and a steady job to explore where no one ventures, who subsists on lentils and fat, and doesn't gloat for glory. His infectious enthusiasm comes across in this extremely well-written first book by Lisa Baile as she recounts his life, trips and travails. Clarke has made more firsts ascents in North America than anyone else. Most remain without a second ascent because they are remote and not the peaks prized by those amassing a life list.I expected a book about a mountaineer and explorer, and was delighted in how well it captured an essence of being at peace in remote mountains just for the sake of sojourning there. Lisa Baile chronicles his life with panache and presents John Clarke's escape into reality, from the stresses of modern fast-paced society as he really roughed it in the most truthful way imaginable.I did not expect Clarke's about face after the avalanche death of a conservationist climbing partner, Randy Stoltman, in 1994. Clarke is transformed and takes up Randy's cause to save BC's pristine coastal forests from logging. Because of his intimate knowledge of the terrain and unexpected but incredibly effective interpersonal skills, he enables people to do things they never thought possible. These typically involved taking people into these wilderness areas that are "beautiful, tranquil, peaceful, informative, fun, secluded, untouched" where individuals are "John Clarked" and take up the cause. It is a captivating read that just might Clarke you too!
