It was the Road which caused the trouble. It usually is the road. That and a reigning prince who was declared by his uncle secretly to have sold his country to the British, and a half-crazed priest from out beyond the borders of Afghanistan, who sat on a slab of stone by the river-bank and preached a djehad. But above all it was the road—Linforth's road. It came winding down from the passes, over slopes of shale; it was built with wooden galleries along the precipitous sides of cliffs; it snaked treacherously further and further across the rich valley of Chiltistan towards the Hindu Kush, until the people of that valley could endure it no longer.

About the Author Alfred Edward Wooley Mason was born in 1865. He was educated at Dulwich College before going up to Oxford University. Once his formal education was completed, Mason went on to become an actor, which had been an ambition since schooldays. He began his writing career with historical fiction, but then moved into the arena of politics, becoming a Liberal Member of Parliament for Coventry in 1906. However, his love of writing stayed with him and Mason further developed his repertoire and style to incorporate detective fiction, introducing one of the earliest fictional detectives, Inspector Hanaud, the Gallic counterpart to Sherlock Holmes. His detective fiction contains material clues and spontaneity. Throughout the course of his life Mason produced over thirty titles. The most enduring work is The Four Feathers’ which is the most filmed work of any writer in the 20th century, with seven versions in all. There have also been many other films and plays based on his novels, including the Hanaud series. A.E.W. Mason died in 1948.

4 of 5 people found the following review helpful. good fun read By S. L. Cheek Mason is the author, for those of you who don't recognize him, of the Four Feathers that made it into the movies a few years back. I picked this up expecting to grit my teeth and bear the racism that one expects from 19th century gentlemen. While this is by no means from the point of view of a native of India, this story of a prince educated in England and then thrown back into a country he regards as barbaric, and the prejudice he finds there ,even from the woman he loves, makes it almost as thought provoking as A Passage to India. The adventure is less important than the ties of blood and prejudice that motivate the main characters.

Very Pleasant Surprise By Book Lover I have been trying out various free books on my Kindle, and have been reading a lot of Pre-WWII popular fiction just to see what was popular then. I have landed on some clunkers, but this book is very well written, in a style not unlike A. J. Cronin. Definitely worth trying.
