Pyongyang, North Korea, 2011. In a city full of lies, one man seeks the truth. In Kim Jong-Il’s North Korea, great things are expected of Han, a lonely guide to foreign tourists. To Ben and Hal, two world-weary Western journalists posing as tourists, Han’s obedience and austerity exemplifies all that is extreme in the totalitarian state. But Han is not all he appears to be; he has deep secrets that, if uncovered, would prove fatal to his life and taint the untouchable reputation of the Party. When Han falls in love with the enigmatic Mae, he is drawn further into danger, which forces to make a desperate decision: to unquestionably obey the Party for safety, or to risk everything for friendship, love, and freedom.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A wholly believable trip behind the Red Curtain of North Korea By C. W. Dingboom Taking place near the end of the Kim jun-Il era in North Korean, Comrade Han is a newly appointed officer of the DPRK's propaganda department tasked with guiding two western tourists and demonstrating the glory and excellence of the North Korean government. However, the westerners are hiding a secret: they're two accomplished journalists seeking to cap off a solid career of in-the-field reporting with an exposé on North Korea's totalitarian grip on its citizens. But Han is hiding a secret as well: a hidden kernel of dissent toward the NK government and distrust of the "Dear Leader".A little bit "1984" and a little bit Cold War spy novel, "The Limits of the World" does an amazing job of building the North Korean world that Han lives in. It is obvious that Drennan did a significant amount of research into North Korea and the myriad of secret, strange happening of the secretive government. But Drennan also does a wonderful job creating believable western journalists, cribbing the VICE magazine archetype to give us two gonzo style journalists trying to infiltrate and expose the DPRK from the inside.Honestly, the book feels tailor-made for a movie option and I wouldn't be surprised to hear some company picking up the rights in the near future.[Review from an advance copy provided by NetGalley]
