The dreary March evening is rapidly passing from murky gloom to obscurity. Gusts of icy rain and sleet are sweeping full against a man who, though driving, bows his head so low that he cannot see his horses. The patient beasts, however, plod along the miry road, unerringly taking their course to the distant stable door. The highway sometimes passes through a grove on the edge of a forest, and the trees creak and groan as they writhe in the heavy blasts. In occasional groups of pines there is sighing and moaning almost human in suggestiveness of trouble. Never had Nature been in a more dismal mood, never had she been more prodigal of every element of discomfort, and never had the hero of my story been more cast down in heart and hope than on this chaotic day which, even to his dull fancy, appeared closing in harmony with his feelings and fortune.

Because there's no sex doesn't mean there's no romance By Maryann Anderson This book is about James Holcroft, a farmer whose wife dies and who finds it difficult to continue doing all the outside work a farmer must do and still keep any sort of control over work that needs to be done INSIDE the house. He hires two different housekeepers, both with disastrous results. He confides to a friend that he is so discouraged after firing the second of these women that he is seriously considering selling his farm and giving up entirely. His friend tells him the solution is not to give up on having a farm but rather to give up on having a housekeeper. He tells him it would be a better idea for James to get married and he has just the woman in mind that he thinks would make James a suitable wife.Alida Armstrong has just learned that her "husband" was not her husband at all because he neglected to tell her that he was already married. When his wife shows up and lets Alida know that she is still married to the man Alida thinks is her husband, Alida immediately leaves the house without even taking the time to pack her clothes. Having no money and having nowhere else to go, she ends up in the poorhouse which is run by James' friend.Taking his friend's advice, James asks Alida to marry him and tells her it would be a sort of business arrangement with no feelings involved because he is still in love with his first wife. He tells her that she can help him by doing the cooking and cleaning for him and he can help her by getting her out of the poorhouse and providing a home for her. Alida is so distrustful of men, after realizing what a snake her first "husband" was that she is not looking for love so she agrees to this business arrangement.I disagree wholeheartedly with the reviewer who says this book "does not belong to the 'romance' genre by any stretch of the word". This author was born in 1838 and died in 1888. He received seminary training and became a chaplain in the military (Second New York Calvary) and then became a hospital chaplain. Still later, he became a Presbyterian minister. Clearly, there's no way there would be any explicit sex in a book written by an author with this background; however, I saw a very tender love story in the way James treated Alida with such respect and gentleness, and in the admiration that Alida had for James. They also genuinely LIKED each other and enjoyed talking together and laughing together. That's my idea of romance.I liked this book so much that I finished the entire book in one day and then went back to Amazon and downloaded all the other books by Roe that I could find. I highly recommend this old fashioned love story.

When James Holcroft loses his wife to illness, he tries to maintain his farm and home by himself. It quickly becomes clear that he needs help. After James hires a series of housekeepers with miserable results, he decides to give up and sell his farm; but a old friend convinces James to try one more time. This time James offers a marriage of convenience to Alida, a young lady who has had her own set of troubles. It is heartwarming to read about two people who unselfishly try hard to help each other.Be prepared - although this is not a long book, it is not a quick read. As was common of books written over a 100 years ago, there are very long chapters without conversation and lots of inner thoughts and reflections by James, but I promise it will be worth your time to read this wonderful story.posted by Poor Richard's wyfe

Delightful story with humor, romance, and spiritual food By Maggie Jarpey "Couldn't put it down" is a phrase that truly applies to this story once you get into it just a little bit. The humor is really good--far better than Dickens' humor, in my opinion. The romance is totally, continuously absorbing, believable, and above all else, enjoyable, except for when trouble arises and you suffer with the main characters even though you are sure there will be a happy ending (because Christian novels from the 19th century generally don't disappoint the reader). This is on my short list of favorite books of my whole (long) life.
