0 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Good beginning By William Jeffson iii Mr. Costales had an ambitious goal when he conceived this novel. It appears as though he wanted to get five or so people to give their impressions of the title character and what he meant to their lives. In the first chapter he cleverly uses the analogy of a pinball machine, one of the old ones with five balls to set up the five life episodes that the reader will encounter in finding out about Jo (whose mother liked the shortened name when the doctor’s pen ran out of ink before adding an “e.”). With such an interesting beginning I was primed to continue on with the story to find out how it was going to end.Unfortunately, Mr. Costales relied on the literary device of a found letter in Chapter Two. The letter provides some insight into Jo as well as two other girls, one of whom dies in a swimming accident that is blamed on Jo. The letter is not very interesting and is much too long to hold this reader’s interest. If you find otherwise perhaps you will be encouraged to continue on with the story. As for me I’ll find something that piques my interest as well as encourages further examination.
