It was a gray, windy noon in the beginning of autumn. The sky and the sea were almost of the same color, and that not a beautiful one. The edge of the horizon where they met was an edge no more, but a bar thick and blurred, across which from the unseen came troops of waves that broke into white crests, the flying manes of speed, as they rushed at, rather than ran towards the shore: in their eagerness came out once more the old enmity between moist and dry.

By A Customer This is a very nice story of a disfunctional family which includes a distant father, an emotionally weak mother, a cold sister, a rotten big brother, and a physically weak little brother. The story focuses on the sister and her struggles between love for a rich cousin and her desire to help the poor of London. Thrown into the mix is an eccentric uncle who has eyes for his niece and an inheritance which complicates the issue. The question is: Is love stronger than hate, humiliation and the comforts of society. This is not a fast paced story but very rewarding for those seeking to develope their own spiritual perspective on life.

The story primarily examines a brother, his sister, and his friend (who is courting his sister), along with many interesting peripheral characters. The brother, Cornelius, is shallow, selfish, unpleasant, greedy, and constantly feels entitled to more money, more respect, better clothes, and a loftier circle of friends. MacDonald draws a picture so accurate of this character, and how his family tries to excuse the obvious signs of his terrible character, I felt as if I lived in the home, I could so well picture the people in it.The sister, Hester, is actively faithful and constantly growing towards God. Her journey is primarily fascinating because it is almost derailed by Cornelius' friend, Mr. Vavasour, who begins to court her - thinking she'll give up her faddish phase of helping the poor when she is properly his fashionable society wife.Vavasour is also well portrayed as a shallow young man who appears good because he never disagrees with anything anyone says whom he wishes to please, but his private thoughts are always turned elsewhere, and his behavior away from the good people he wishes to impress is selfish, rude and unlovely. He is fascinated by Hester, but he only wants a desirable wife he can show off. Nothing she says ever truly penetrates his artificial surface, nor does she easily realize that what's under his surface isn't what she, because he never disagrees with her, took it for.I had a hard time putting this book down, but for me though the book as a whole was excellent, the events that wound it up were unsatisfying for me, so I could not give it five stars. MacDonald has an annoying habit of developing his female characters into such saintly people that they can't marry - no man around them has similar goals. He has also created some children so saintly that all he can do is kill them off. In the end, dead good children and saintly spinsters don't make a good story for me, but I would still recommend this book as good reading and very good Christian guidance on discerning some personalities that pass for "good" when they are really considerably less than good.

Contrast By JamesWorld Immersing oneself in the world of George MacDonald brings one into such sharp contrast with our world today that it defies adequate definition. So many of our world's loose ways we take for granted are raised up to examination in the light of better, higher standard. Weighed and Wanting doesn't leave one hopeless in the face of our moral and spiritual poverty. Rather, MacDonald has a way of giving one hope. Not hope for everyone all at once, but hope for oneself. If one will hold a higher standard and try to reach it today there is hope for all. The book is a masterpiece of inner conditioning.
