Few individuals share Brent Loehr's fascinating and diverse perspective on baseball. Taste the truly international flavor of America's greatest game as he did, and draw life lessons from the inspiring stories of others. Brent's baseball journey began in Western Canada. A playing career that culminated as catcher at a US college evolved into coaching, which grew to running clinics, and then finally became stints as Envoy Coach with Major League Baseball International, developing and delivering clinics around the world. Read about a perilous trip on Arctic waters with an adventurous group of Inuit hunters; rewarding Canadian baseball connections with the spirited Bill Spaceman Lee and legendary author W.P. Kinsella; an encounter with a one-armed European ballplayer who had never heard of Jim Abbott; a baseball signed by Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig that touched lives at a monastery for decades; and a life-altering summer spent in Africa growing the game.

It will be necessary, for the purpose of my story, that I shall go back more than once from the point at which it begins, so that I may explain with the least amount of awkwardness the things as they occurred, which led up to the incidents that I am about to tell; and I may as well say that these first four chapters of the book—though they may be thought to be the most interesting of them all by those who look to incidents for their interest in a tale—are in this way only preliminary.

Mr. Scarborough's Family, by Anthony Trollope

From the Back Cover This striking story is dominated by the heroic John Scarborough, a wealthy squire who, with almost superhuman energy, contrives from his deathbed to defeat the hated law of entail. Seeking to bequeath his estate to the worthier of his two sons, in his pursuit of justice he subjects them to a testing examination, baffles the lawyers, and scandalizes society. The social world also comes under Trollope's ironic gaze. His searching treatment of the various codes governing courtship and marriage, money-lending, frustration of youth and the sadness of age.

It is witty, clever and has plot twists worthy of the best suspense writers. This one deals with one of Trollope's favorite topics -- the law -- with the usual romantic crises thrown in, of course. Excellent book and I highly recommend it.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Mr. Scarborough's obsession By Meredith/Susan This is a tale of an entail, and of two brothers, profligate soldier Mountjoy Scarborough, the elder, and prudent lawyer Augustus Scarborough, the younger, and of a father determined by any means to keep his very profitable estate out of the hands of his first-born son and acknowledged heir, lest it be lost forever to the claims of the moneylenders to whom Mountjoy has mortgaged his expectations.Mr. Scarborough shocks his sons, his conscientious lawyer Mr. Grey, and the world at large when he abruptly declares Mountjoy to have been born out of wedlock, prior to his marriage to his now long-deceased wife. The legal heir, he now maintains, has always been Augustus. Over the years both father and brother have been willing to help Mountjoy pay off his endless gambling debts, but when the father, feeling himself near death, finally learns the full extent of Mountjoy's borrowing against the property, he realizes that only drastic measures can now save it for the family. Mr. Scarborough himself has long been known for living entirely by his own rules; understanding as everyone does that he is not a person to be troubled by scruples, no one knows if he is telling the truth or not, though Trollope does give his readers a hint. If Augustus is to inherit, Mountjoy's many creditors will be forced to agree to some compromise or else receive nothing, and Mountjoy must be left penniless. Here, even more so than in Orley Farm, the limits of the lawyer/client relationship are put to the test, as Mr. Scarborough and Mr. Grey operate out of completely opposing views of reality.None of this is very romantic, but there is, lurking in the murky depths of this dark novel, an appealing love story. Mountjoy Scarborough and his cousin Florence Mountjoy have been considered, at least by his father and her mother, to be engaged. Mountjoy still hopes Florence will marry him, but she, at first impressed by his glamour, but later finding him to be frighteningly imperious, already knows he is not the man for her. She has met someone she likes better, and Mountjoy is aware of it. Mild-mannered Harry Annesley, son of a clergyman and Cambridge friend of the Scarborough brothers, also looks forward to an inheritance. He is heir to his bachelor uncle, a minor squire with a moderate income and tender sensibilities. Harry is a typically hapless, tentative Trollope hero. When Harry and Mountjoy meet by chance on a dark London street after midnight, a violent scuffle ensues, then Mountjoy vanishes, and Harry is unable or unwilling to answer any questions about the incident. Augustus, now also interested in Florence for himself, expresses his suspicions, then embarks on a campaign to destroy Harry's reputation and turn the world against him.Mr. Scarborough, in no hurry to die, lives long enough to wreak further havoc in the lives of those supposedly near and dear to him. He is a thoroughly Machiavellian figure. From his death bed, seeing very few visitors, he still manages to act as a puppet master manipulating the actions and thoughts of his relatives and associates. When he finally succumbs, he continues to demonstrate his ability to dismay and disturb even from beyond the grave, exhibiting godlike powers over the fates of his sons, his lawyers, and everyone else who ever came under his influence. Trollope, as magnanimous as any creator toward his creations, insists that of the three Scarboroughs, one is to be admired, one is to be pitied, and only one is to be despised. This was Trollope's final completed novel. Even though the main story tends toward the dark and pessimistic, lighter moments are provided by the pretentious diplomatic household of Sir Magnus Mountjoy in Brussels, where Florence attracts the unwanted attentions of yet more young men, the absurd courtship of the formidable Miss Thoroughbung by Harry's foolish Uncle Prosper, droll butler Matthew's expert management of his master, and a little fox hunting. The domestic life and thoughtful opinions of honest lawyer Mr. Grey and his noble, eccentric daughter Dolly, who between them selflessly support a large family of highly unsympathetic poor relations, contrast with and illuminate the selfish, reckless, deceitful lives of the amoral Scarboroughs.

2 of 3 people found the following review helpful. Mr. Scarborough's Family By Clarence I am a great fan of Trollope's work; have read and enjoyed 30 or 40 of his novels. But this one was awful. The characters are uninteresting, and it's very repetitious; he frequently rehashes what's happened before, and it gets very boring. His anti-Semitism is particularly ugly here. Altogether, a very disappointing book.

It was well along in the forenoon of a bitter winter's day. The town of Eastport, in the state of Maine, lay buried under a deep snow that was newly fallen. The customary bustle in the streets was wanting. One could look long distances down them and see nothing but a dead-white emptiness, with silence to match. Of course I do not mean that you could see the silence—no, you could only hear it.

Steinbauer revisits fundamental golf mechanics with intimate recollections of legendary players and instructors. Although few swing secrets are revealed, there are many engaging insights to the practice habits of great players. Hogan, for example, managed his ball flight by setting precise practice objectives and hitting balls relentlessly until control was assured. Each of the 18 lessons concludes with a suggested take-away for the high, mid, and low handicapper. Thus, the professional's game is made accessable to all. This is a particularly good book to enjoy by the winter fire when dreams of a new, improved golf season seem achievable.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Worth a read By NMOORE5 Anyone who knows golf knows Harvey Penick was a great not good teacher. He was a master. So any book that contains some of that wisdom is worth a read. As a lover of the game I found this to be a very entertaining book. The advice is more centered on game management and mental approach than it is mechanics. But that's also exactly the point. Anyone who has played enough of the game realizes at some point that golf is not a physical game so much as it is mental. The other reviewer of this book missed that point. This book is about how to lower your score and details the stories from the authors experience around some of the best in the game and one of the best teachers in the game. There is always something to be learned from his experience.

For there is only one Chad Galactic, a true original, a man of vision and creativity. I love his new book of poems, it’s a gift to the world.” - ZACH GILL Jack Johnson, ALO & Chad’s Biggest Fan "In his debut collection of poems, Chad Galactic has somehow harnessed the energy of Shell Silverstein, the documentary aesthetic of Henry Rollins, and the honesty of Bukowski while preserving a level of originality not often found in most writers first work. The result of this is a truly unique and enjoyable read. At a time when so many writers are busy emulating and trying to convey the murky landscapes of someone else’s experiences and emotions, Galactic has decided to use the spirit of those great artists as nothing more than a springboard into a universe and atmosphere all his own. No drop-curtain, at any theatre I have seen, was ever so richly imagined, with misty tops and shadowy clefts and frowning cliffs and gloomy valleys and long, plunging cataracts, as the actual landscape of Madeira, when we drew nearer and nearer to it, at the close of a tearful afternoon of mid-January. The scenery of drop-curtains is often very boldly beautiful, but here Nature, if she had taken a hint from art, had certainly bettered her instruction. During the waits between acts at the theatre, while studying the magnificent painting beyond the trouble of the orchestra, I have been most impressed by the splendid variety which the artist had got into his picture, where the spacious frame lent itself to his passion for saying everything; but I remembered his thronging fancies as meagre and scanty in the presence of the stupendous reality before me.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Why? Because... By propertius Why read the memories of an English speaking tourist, albeit a most literate one, about his European sojourn taken over 100 years ago? It gives you an idea of the expectations and prejudices of a time when travel was taken seriously. As anyone who has read this type of book will tell you, the author whether intentionally or not, reveals his and his times expectations and interpretations of what he sees. This book does more so than most. And as "the past is prologue," so much more so then here. What it must of have been like for thee traveler to Europe who was born when "Italy" did not exist but the Papal States and the Kingdom of Naples and Sicily did. What did he see in monuments which resonated history and not modern tourism. Of course there has been tourism in Italy for two thousand years but it has always mutated to reflect the aspirations of the tourists of that day.Why four stars and not five, a mundane complaint, no TOC. Nevertheless, a worthy addition to any library.

I HAVE been asked to tell you about the back of the north wind. An old Greek writer mentions a people who lived there, and were so comfortable that they could not bear it any longer, and drowned themselves. My story is not the same as his. I do not think Herodotus had got the right account of the place. I am going to tell you how it fared with a boy who went there.

At the Back of the North Wind, by George MacDonald

About the Author George MacDonald, December 10, 1824 - September 18. 1905 George MacDonald was born on December 10, 1824 in Huntley, Aberdeenshire, Scotland. He attended University in Aberdeen in 1840 and then went on to Highbury College in 1848 where he studied to be a Congregational Minister, receiving his M. A. His first appointment was in Arundel, but he was forced to resign form the position in 1853. He became a lecturer in English Literature at Kings College in London before finally focusing all of his attention on writing and living off the charity of friends and pupils. In 1955, MacDonald wrote his first important original work, a long religious poem entitled "Within and Without." Three years later in 1858, he wrote "Phantastes," his first contribution to the fantasy genre. It was influenced by both the English and Germanic Romantic writers and religious poets of the Renaissance. MacDonald is perhaps best known for his fantasy children's books, although he wrote fantasy books for adults as well. His most well known children's book is "At the Back of the North Wind," which was surprisingly a favorite of Mark Twain's children. In 1863, MacDonald published "David Eiginbrod, the first of a dozen novels that were set in Scotland and based on the lives of rural Scots. It was these series of novels that gained MacDonald worldwide fame and brought money to the foundering MacDonald family. MacDonald was a friend and confident of Lewis Carroll and John Ruskin. He exchanged letters with Mark Twain, and met Walt Whitman and many other American writers on his trips to America. MacDonald also inspired his later compatriots, such as C. S. Lewis, with his blend of fantasy and Christianity. George MacDonald died in Ashtead, Surrey, England, on September 18. 1905. His body is buried in Bordighea, Italy, a place he spent most of his later years in.

76 of 79 people found the following review helpful. beautiful in its simplicity By William Krischke This book reminded me a great deal of "The Little Prince" by Antoine Saint-Exubery, the main difference being that the underlying philosophy here is Christian, as opposed to the Easternish philosophy of the former book. Like "The Little Prince", it speaks quietly and simply of things that are so true we tend to overlook or forget them. Unlike the mentioned book, this one brings in harsher elements, such as poverty and abuse -- and shows how the simple wisdom of a child can overcome them. MacDonald's imagination is wonderful, and some of the dreams and fairy tales in the book almost outshine the "real" story. I love the children who dig for stars. This is one I enjoyed because it is so different, so simple and beautiful, and one I look forward to sharing with my children, should I ever have any.PS - My sister read an edited, abridged version of this book, one rewritten to make it easier for children, and it was awful. It skipped whole chapters and left out some of the very best parts. I think kids can handle this book, just the way it was written. Stay away from nasty abridgements that are really censorship in disguise!

When you read him it is not the quality of his writing, but rather his personality (kindly and eccentric, at the same time so quintessentially Scotch)and immensely powerful and original imagination that show on the page. He is more an excellent storyteller than a "proper" author, I think. In the North Wind, as in much of MacDonald's work, there is a wealth of moral and religous themes and analougies under the surface. In my mid 20's now, I was surprised at the effect that reading MacDonald's childrens books has had on me. It is not that I would have disagreed on an intellectual level with anything in the books before reading them, but rather that McDonald has a talent for gently bringing people to examine what their opinions mean and how they treat other people as a result of them. I've found more than a few chinks in my own armour, in that respect. As for North Wind in particular, it's quite a breathtaking, display of raw, imaginative brawn. The first third or so of the book is perhaps one of the most chilling and beautiful stories I've ever read. It becomes a little more conventional after that and meanders a little. There is a good bit of amiable nonsense and a fairy tale within it that, though it seems a little tacked on and has nothing to do with the greater story, is still very clever and charming. I think most adults will see the ending coming, but it left me a little shaken up anyway.Like some of the other reviewers have mentioned, it's a very hard thing to create a character who is absoulutely good. There is a real danger of making the character into a weak, simpering, priggish, goody two shoes. It's a testament to MacDonald, even just that Diamond isn't appallingly annoying, but that he is actually a very likable and smypathetic character. He reminded me very much of a small version of Dostoyevsky's Prince Myshkin. To close, I feel I can hardly recommend MacDonald in general or North Wind in particular highly enough. Be certain to get an unedited version, there is nothing in the original that you'll want to do without (I read the puffin classics edition with the cover art of Diamond on a glacier). Though the style is somewhat Victorian(not that there's anything in itself wrong with that) and though MacDonald's writing is a little idiosyncratic to begin with, I don't think it would present any serious problems to an older child or young adolescent reading on their own -at least, no more so than a book by Tolkien or Lewis would. It's true that McDonald was a Christian minister and this book is proabably best used, and was most likely originally intended, to be read aloud by parents to their children within a Christian family. That said, I do not think there is anything in it that any person with faith in God, whether they were Christian or otherwise, would find fault with. I think MacDonald is an author who repays an open and thoughtful reading in a way that will work for many people in many stages of their life.

39 of 40 people found the following review helpful. A Diamond in the rough! By Frank J O'Connor This enchanting classic is as lively and moving to read as the day it was written. There is no Victorian stodginess or moralizing here. I remember reading an essay where Simone Weil lamented over the difficulty of portraying goodness in literature--in fiction evil seemed to dominate. Well here in the character of the lad Diamond is one of the most convincing evocations of human goodness and saintliness in literature, childrens' or adult. One is reminded of St. Francis of Assisi when contemplating Diamond; his purity, innocense, and unselfconsciousness float right off the page. I especilly call your attention to the dialogue between Diamond and his mother on the beach as she tries hopelessly to explain to him that now they are poor. His sublimely worldly (and yet otherworldly )responses are both hilarious and deeply moving. One of MacDonald's core beliefs, so often and passionately stated throughout his writings, is here given flesh and blood: goodness is truth.

Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. Women's Studies. Edited by Martha Collins, Kevin Prufer, and Martin Rock. "Catherine Breese Davis fills an important but unsung niche in the tradition of women's poetry in the U.S.—and now unsung no more. The editors of this book have given us a brilliant selection from Davis's poems, combined with illuminating writings about her work and life. This volume is a true labor of love, a priceless introduction to a lucid, poignant, and unflinching poet."—Annie Finch "I have admired Catherine Davis's exquisitely sculpted lyrics for over forty years. But it has been futile to recommend her work to others because it has been nearly impossible for anyone to find the poems, most of which were never published in book form. What a gift to have this lost poet restored to us."—Dana Goia

I recently discovered Catherine Breese Davis. She is a splendid poet, if you like straightforward, deeply insightful poetry. Her styles vary, but are well-informed by poetic fundamentals and are stunningly memorable. The first half of the book are some of her wonderful poems. The second half of the book are essays on Davis's life and work, which are very helpful in putting her in context. I highly recommend this artfully compiled and printed book for poetry lovers.

By Kathe Davis Admittedly I'm biased, since I knew Catherine (no relation), and have a memory piece in this collection. Still, I can say objectively that it has been beautifully edited, has collected some remarkable and insightful critical commentary, and above all has assembled Catherine's own poems more completely and coherently than any previous publication. The reader can see this serious, dedicated poet in her changing contexts, and at the same time learn her near-tragic uniqueness.

When you get to know a fellow, know his joys and know his cares, When you've come to understand him and the burdens that he bears, When you've learned the fight he's making and the troubles in his way, Then you find that he is different than you thought him yesterday. You find his faults are trivial and there's not so much to blame In the brother that you jeered at when you only knew his name.

Remembering Childhood By David Herren My Grandmother used to read these poems to me at bedtime and it was a delight to her her read these wonderful words to me. She read from her own edition from her childhood so now I can see part of what shaped her love of poetry.Edgar A. Guest has a way with words which speak of those things we call American. It is "comfort reading" well worth exploring in these present times.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Delightful Poetry By Keith Kendall I memorized some poems of Edgar A. Guest as a youth. Here are a couple of them that are in this book.BE A FRIENDBe a friend. You don't need money;Just a disposition sunny;Just the wish to help anotherGet along some way or other;Just a kindly hand extendedOut to one who's unbefriended;Just the will to give or lend,This will make you someone's friend.Be a friend. You don't need glory.Friendship is a simple story.Pass by trifling errors blindly,Gaze on honest effort kindly,Cheer the youth who's bravely trying,Pity him who's sadly sighing;Just a little labor spendOn the duties of a friend.Be a friend. The pay is bigger(Though not written by a figure)Than is earned by people cleverIn what's merely self-endeavor.You'll have friends instead of neighborsFor the profits of your labors; You'll be richer in the endThan a prince, if you're a friend.UNDER THE SKIN OF MEN Did you ever sit down and talk with men In a serious sort of a way, On their views of life and ponder then On all that they have to say? If not, you should in some quiet hour; It's a glorious thing to do: For you'll find that back of the pomp and power Most men have a goal in view. They'll tell you then that their aim is not The clink of the yellow gold; That not in the worldly things they've got Would they have their stories told. They'll say the joys that they treasure most Are their good friends, tried and true, And an honest name for their own to boast And peace when the day is through. I've talked with men and I think I know What's under the toughened skin. I've seen their eyes grow bright and glow With the fire that burns within. And back of the gold and back of the fame And back of the selfish strife, In most men's breasts you'll find the flame Of the nobler things of life.*end*

The Poetry Trilogy Volume 3 is the FINAL Volume of the largest collection of poetry ever published by a singe author. TPT3 Was the #1 Poetry Book worldwide on Amazon when it was released. The Poetry Trilogy is a 3 volume collection of poetry written by the author Aaron La Lux. The Poetry Trilogy is divided up into 3 volumes, TPT1, TPT2, and TPT3. All together the 3 volumes contain approx. 300,000 words, 2400 pages, and 700 poems. The poems are divided into "The Seven Pillars of Creation", which are Pillar 1: GOD, Pillar 2: LIFE, Pillar 3: LOVE, Pillar 4: HATE, Pillar 5: TRAVELS, Pillar 6: ILLUMINATIONS, and Pillar 7: DEATH. TPT covers a wide variety of subjects over the vast spectrum of our existence. Some of the poems are beautiful wonderful sagas about romance and spirituality, while other poems are disturbingly dark sonnets about death and destruction. One would be hard pressed to find any topic not covered in this massive collection. There are multiple poems that start with every letter in the alphabet, and almost every word one could think of has been used at least once in this compilation. The poems in TPT were written in over 50 countries and on every continent in the world except Antarctica. Symbolic of the global perspective of TPT, the three volumes were each published from very different parts of the world. TPT1 was released from Laos on 10/10/14, TPT2 was released from Belize on 2/2/15, and TPT3 will be released from Israel on 6/6/15. The numerology of the release dates of this volumes is apparent when studied, though what is not known is the deeper meaning behind the numbers.

The Poetry Trilogy: Volume 3, by Aaron La Lux, Elijah Toten

About the Author I left home as 14, lived on the streets, ate out of trash cans, and slept in bushes. I now own two corporations and travel around the world doing whatever I want. On my journey from the street life to the beach life I've had more than my fair share of hardships and extreme situations. I've faced Death numerous times. It was during one of my near death experiences that I was blessed enough to receive a vision from God. In Gods message I was informed that it was not my time to die, that I had more work to do here on this earth before I could go. I came out of this near Death experience and began writing poetry that same day. Little did I know then that the poems I had begun writing would go on to form the largest collection of poetry ever published by a single author. This has been an amazing experience. And now that I've finally completed the last Chapter, of the last Pillar, of the last Volume of The Poetry Trilogy I am both relieved and worried. For I feel as though this massive literary work that I've compiled may indeed be the work that I was sent by God to do, and now that it's finished, Death seems closer than ever. I've always had visions that I would die young, in a car crash, on a mountain road at night. So if I do go, and you are reading this, please know that I Love you, honestly. And I have prayed, and will pray, every day for world peace, and harmony, through compassion and understanding. It is my intention that The Poetry Trilogy assist in spreading that message in whatever ways possible. The Poetry Trilogy is one of my major contributions to our collective humanity. Thank you for reading. Good Luck & God Bless.

There is so much to say about this amazing endeavour and you as an incredible and eccentric being By Angeline There is so much to say about this amazing endeavour and you as an incredible and eccentric being!!! Kyle and I are thinking of you and talking about your poetry, and want to tell you a few things: you write because that is your highest calling and whatever way that comes out as, it is the most perfect thing you can do/give to the world, no need for affirmations from self or others (tho they are nice:))) be true to yourself and there is no place for judgment!! So Hum :) To us, the sheer volume of your work shows your love for it, your work brings out emotions, allowing us one of the greatest humans experiences we can have, to feel something. to share your own collection of experiences in this life time is a joy to be able to witness, it is wonderful when ppl can leave their legacies in messages that can transcend space and time. We have come to realize that one part about loving ones art is that we come to love the artist, we can experience their soul through an infinite moment induced through a piece of work; as we have come to know you, it is undeniable for us that we love what you create, those two are pretty much the same, creator and creation : ) Thank You! Love you, Namaste

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. A Thoughtful and Amazing Read By paula matheos Volume 3 is so amazing! This entire collection of poetry is such a great read whether you read it all the way through at once or take each poem one at a time, because of the diversity of the subject matter which ranges from God to love and life itself and anything and everything else you can think. It was so refreshing to laugh, reflect and learn by reading one book. Aaron's writing style is so fluid when it is needed and juxtaposes when needed as well. He is a true poet with a lot to say and a lot to give. After reading the first two volumes, this is a perfect way to complete the trilogy and the journey I went through with Aaron's poems. I can't wait to read his next project and in the meantime will definitely be reading this collection over and over again!

The book covers more areas than the class did, looking at the schedule for the level 2 class (which I did not take yet) I would say that those two classes cover the same areas as the book. The book is an easy straight forward read. It is written as a step by step process, meaning first you find out what gear size you need, then you put the parts together and get them into the water, then you climb up on the board and start up hauling before you go on to learn turning, jibing and tacking and so on. As I was already signed up for a class I did not actually do the steps while reading the book, but I think that most of the stuff corresponded well to with what we did in the class.Overall I would say that it felt really good to have read the book before the class as I already had a good head start for the classroom parts of the class, and that made it a lot easier to focus and listen to the instructors during the practice sessions as I already knew most of the theory even though some parts were not identical to the course literature. As the title suggests, the book is definitely geared towards beginners. I have never really sailed in my life, I have tried (wave) surfing a couple of times though but I would still count myself as a complete newbie as that was way back. Given this, I had no trouble understanding most things as the more complicated ones were well explained and often illustrated. If you already can ride, I think there may be some parts that could be useful such as checklists, gear care and right of way rules and maybe other parts, of course this depends on how much you already know… so this might not be for you.All in all, I would recommend this as a great starting point for beginners to Windsurfing. Considering I just paid half price compared to the other one available in the same category I'm happy with my purchase!

This novel could best be described as historical fiction since it is based on actual events that the author experienced firsthand during the year 1950 and uses both real and fictional characters as well as real and fictional events. Following the second war to end all wars, a group of young men stationed at Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, find themselves in a virtual land of enchantment. Though not exactly a murder mystery, the book begins with the investigation of the murders of two young boys that takes place at a now defunct military base, Camp Catlin, on the island of Oahu. The narrative follows the exploits of these young marines, who eventually get caught up in an unexpected war in an unexpected place. There is mystery, romance, humor, camaraderie, deceit, betrayal, dilemma, death, hardship, and pain as the book shifts from part one in the tropical splendorous “heaven” of Hawaii to part two, in the frozen “hell” of war torn South and North Korea. If you enjoy adventure filled with twists and turns, this is the book for you.

Truly creative writing in having the first & last word of the book be the same. Although, historical fiction is not my usual genre of choice, the characters & storyline gripped me right away & compelled me to keep reading until I reached the end. Chosin Star is a murder mystery & war drama rolled into one. This book takes you from the beauty of Hawaii, to the ugly heart of the Korean War, and back to Hawaii again. The outcome of the crime that is committed at the beginning is not revealed until near the end. You will keep guessing as you become attached to the main character Smitty, and follow him through the many twists & turns. Mystery, drama, sadness, compassion, humor, this book has it all. A real page turner. I highly recommend giving this book a try. You won't be disappointed!

A vivid and intriguing historical fiction By Anthony Christle The murder mystery aspect of this book would be enough to keep most people hooked by itself, with an intriguing and constantly twisting plot. Thar being said, I personally found it took a back seat to the vivid setting of the novel. The author brings to life his memories of life in the 'old core', from the down and dirty mean streets of Hawaii, to the horrors of the frozen nightmare that was the Korean war. When one keeps in mind that the people, places, and events are largely real, the words come alive and show the reader the gritty and thrilling world the Frozen Chosin and Chesty puller made famous.

It brought back memories of the men in my large family coming together on holidays, telling stories that as a child I found captivating. The fact that this story is based for the most part on the happenings in the life of a young man from Michigan makes it even more interesting. It is also an intense look into the minds of people, and what the capacity of some amongst us are able to deal with for the remainder of our lives. Oh, and war is hell.

On my eightieth birthday, Jonathan gave me a notebook. Hard-backed with brown and pale yellow marbling on the cover, like chocolate in cream. 'I want you to write something for me,' said Jonathan, his dark eyes locking onto mine. 'I want you to write your story, Mam.' Peggy's story is the story of her Snowdonia village – of a community that that shares its joys and its woes across floured kitchen tables and scrubbed shop counters. Throughout Peggy's life food looms large – the lack of it, the sharing of it, the eating of it – from gingerbread to cawl, ce-cream to bara-brith. Her recipes are well-used and much appreciated, but no one is quite sure where her inspiration comes from, why she is the way she is. Not until everyone's tale is told does Peggy's story unfold... as thick, dark and sticky as treacle.

Review: 'The Seasoning' by Manon Steffan Ros By Jody - "A Spoonful of Happy Endings" 'The Seasoning' is a story spread out over several decades, starting in 1937 and ending around 2010, and focusing on main character Peggy. Set in a village in Snowdonia, young girl Peggy is struggling to take care of her mother and herself. After a horrible accident, Peggy goes to live with her grandparents which is the start of some changes in her life. As a reader, we get to follow Peggy and the people close to her, watch her grow up and make changes that affect both her and the people around her.I don't want to give away too much about the plotline of 'The Seasoning', because I truly believe it's a story you just need to read and experience for yourself. Author Megan Steffan Ros originally wrote the novel in Welsh and this is the English translation of the book. I'd love to be able to read the original, because I'm sure it's even more powerful, but Welsh is unfortunately not one of my strong points! The novel primarily focuses on main character Peggy and her life in a smal village in Snowdonia from roughly 1937 until 2010. Food plays an important role in her life and this specifically comes back in the book in the form of recipes at the start of each chapter. Each person that somehow played an important role in Peggy's life is linked to a recipe in the book, and each recipe is the start of a new chapter told from the perspective of a different character. In that way, the story is told from various different points of view which is an approach I loved and have never come across before in a novel. Manon Steffan Ros is a talented author who really blew me away with her writing. The Welsh setting reminded me personally of all the lovely times I've had in Wales, but the story as a whole also really touched me. I want to give a special thanks to publisher Honno for sending me a review copy of this book; I'm really glad I got the chance to read it! 'The Seasoning' is a beautifully written and touching work of fiction, unlike anything else I've read before; undoubtedly worth picking up!

It started in 1937 with a piece of ginger cake. The young Peggy is afraid of her mother. She is a neglected child and her mother ignores her presence. After a horrible incident Peggy asks for help, because she can't take it any longer. Later her life is a lot happier, but she can't forget the past.Peggy's unusual appearance and low weight are something that doesn't go unnoticed. She loves food and can never stop eating, but she's really thin. A better period starts for her when she's almost an adult and Peggy is free to go wherever she likes. As she loves her work in the village shop she stays in Llanegryn and marries the shop owner. With him Peggy can be herself, but her past keeps influencing her present...Every person who plays an important role in her life also has a recipe to share. Food and people are always related in Peggy's world. Peggy is eccentric. Her looks are peculiar, her behavior is strange and her relationship with food isn't just one filled with love. Peggy has a darker side and slowly the truths are being revealed. They are alternated with delicious food in the form of recipes from people who love Peggy. I enjoyed that very much. It made me fall in love with this book straight away. The warmth of the people is visible through the food they like to eat.I love the recipes in The Seasoning. They are simple with fresh ingredients and easy instructions. For me the food made the story. There's no Peggy without something to eat. The recipes made my mouth water. The deliciousness of food in combination with the difficult topic of mental illness and the consequences of living with someone who's suffering from it is a daring combination. I think it worked really well in Peggy's case and Manon Steffan Ros is such a talented author. I was glued to my seat, I couldn't stop reading. At the same time I wanted to start cooking, but I couldn't put the book away and wanted to finish the story even more. The Seasoning is a book filled with delightful contrasts, which is what I loved about it. I highly recommend this fantastic book. I can't praise it enough, it's one of those hidden gems, a book to treasure and to read again and again. My advice is to read this book from cover to cover first and then read it again more slowly by making the recipes one by one to eat while reading their corresponding chapters. I think that would be a unique experience and it's one I'm definitely going to explore.

Terrific contemporary Welsh novel now available in English translation by the author By Tahl Thrilled that Manon Steffan Ros has adapted her wonderful novel Blasu (Tasting) into English so that I can share it with friends unable to read it in Welsh. The original is a moving, readable, and cleverly-constructed story of a woman's long life across the course of the twentieth century, with nourishment in both concrete and figurative senses acting as a thematic thread. The author writes so well in Welsh that I have high expectations for her English version, too.

By Michael Caliphate: Man Made Hell is one of the best books to come out of the ground campaigns of Iraq and Afghanistan. This fiction captures the desperation of a soldier alone in the most hostile environment on Earth: ISIS controlled territory. The author is very technical in detail, but does so through the lens of experience and in a way that is not lost on the lay reader. This is a story of a soldier using every tool he can carry on a motorcycle in a desperate attempt to minimize chance and ultimately to escape death. The stakes are high for our characters because in this enemy infested landscape, any other death than to die in a firefight is certainly a torturous prospect. The psychology of just being in this predicament is racing after the characters just as fast as death itself.Enjoy this read. I did.

By Amazon Customer Caliphate Man Made Hell is an excellent book with a steady pace and well-developed characters. The book describes a man's struggle to survive, when he can only rely on himself. This theme reveals the true fragility of our independence as well as the true strength. The book leads into the authors own insight and intuitions on death and the beyond, and how scary it is to face these. I'm not great at writing reviews: just read it, it's well worth the cost. :)
