As a college professor, my job for 40 years was to write and critique books and manuscripts. Mark Smith has done an excellent job capturing the essence of the drone hobby in a brief, readable and enjoyable book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants an overview of flying quadcopters and drones. Mark doesn't miss the essentials but he also doesn't provide extensive technical details that tend to turn off the average reader. I was able to read Quadcopters and Drones in an evening but have kept it my flight box for future reference. This should be in everyone's library who enjoys flying quadcopters and drones for pleasure or as a professional.

By Amazon Customer If you are planning on getting into flying Drones and Quadcopters, this is the book to read. Mark explains everything you wanted to know but were afraid to ask about the subject. if you have read any of his metal detecting books then you are familiar with the way he writes. He will get down in the weeds when he explains something but he makes it all understandable and throws in some of his own experiences on what to do and what not to do. If you are into photography he goes into some detail about how you can use one of these for taking pictures and some of the better ways to do it. If you are into metal detecting you can use one for searching an area to see what the terrain is like that you will be hunting. I was not into drones or quadcopters until I read the book, I got about half through and started investigating getting one for myself. If you are not sure what kind to get for what ever application have no fear, Mark goes into each one and gives a good explanation for them. I highly recommend this book.

Well-illustrated with easy to understand descriptions of products, procedures, and lessons to avoid learning the hard way.The author provides POC information at the back of the book; when he encourages his readers to contact him, he means it! I had a question regarding control movements for a specific flight maneuver and he replied to my email within hours, providing recommendations and additional insights.I'd definitely recommend this easy-reading book to anyone beginning this hobby.

Best Ebook PDF If You Didn't Bring Jerky, What Did I Just Eat?: Misadventures in Hunting, Fishing, and the Wilds of Suburbia, by Bill Heavey

Whether he is accidentally cooking his brain with hand warmers or yanking his lure away from a trophy fish just before it takes the bait, Bill Heavey can do no right. For almost a decade, he has chronicled his incompetence on the back page of Field & Stream, where his hilarious dispatches about life as a hapless outdoorsman who lives in suburbia have earned him legions of fans.

But Heavey is more than a humorist. The stories in this book range from amusing tales of a modern dad struggling to navigate the finer points of parenting and married life to longer and more serious narratives that involve travel, adventure, and tragedy. No matter what he's writing about, Heavey is a master of blending humor and pathos - and wide-ranging outdoor enthusiasms - into a poignant and potent stew.

I have read his stories in Field and stream for years and love to flip to the back of the magazine to see what he's been up to. This book is a collection of his stories and it makes the book hard to put down. The way he relates to the average Joe in his trials and errors is what makes this book an instant classic that I will never part with. I think this book will appeal to more than just the Field and Stream faithful and is worth taking the chance on if you love the outdoors.Definetly worth a look.

Leathally funny, yet authentic and sincere By Kindle Customer I am currently editing a book of fishing stories that will be published in late 2008, I've read about 20 books on fishing in the last six months as part of my editing job. Bill Heavey's book has many things going for it. The writing is economical, clear and deftly funny, and each story is its own adventure. For example: one explores the absurdities of ice fishing, another details the Cuban version of the Bass Masters national tournament, and another the authors frustrations of getting skunked on a fishing trip in Mongolia. The stories in this book tend to be short (2-3 pages). You can usually finish one before your spouse catches on that you are reading and available to be interrupted. While I am not a fan of hunting stories, I really enjoyed the ones he presents in this book, he has a way of tying hunting and fishing back to his wife and daughter, back to important, ironic, tragic, and personal moments in life. These are the kind of stories that you read and find yourself repeating to your friends. They stuck with me and I enjoy carrying them through my days.

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful. Don't read this in bed... By K. Zitnay Don't read this in bed unless you want to get kicked out for keeping your wife awake due to constantly laughing outloud uncontrollablly! I thoroughly enjoyed reading these stories, and highly recommend it for anyone who has ever been hunting or fishing.

This booklet is packed full of priceless, time tested ideas, many of which may be completely new to you. Are you interested in scoring lower? Do you have limited time to practice? Are you willing to play golf differently? If you answered those three questions in the affirmative, then you can break 90 and maybe even 80. As someone with average athletic ability and a few physical issues, I encourage you to buy a copy, perhaps several more for your golfing buddies, spend a quiet few hours reading and rereading, and then go play Easy Bogey!

Thanks to his persistent mother Government Cheese has become a thing to be feared and avoided at all costs. 3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. the first in a series and the beginning of a teenage sleuth By Richard Chappell The Ruth Fielding Series is a 30 volume series that was published from 1913 through 1934. Three authors wrote the series under the pseudonym of Alice B. Emerson. W. Bert Foster wrote volumes 1 through 19; Elizabeth M. Duffield Ward wrote volumes 20 through 22; and Mildred A. Wirt Benson wrote volumes 23 through 30. "Ruth Fielding of the Red Mill Or, Jasper Parloe's Secret" is the first in this series. Book 2 is "Ruth Fielding at Briarwood Hall" and book 3 is "Ruth Fielding at Snow Camp".Ruth Fielding reminds me of a cross between Anne Shirley and Nancy Drew. When we are introduced to Ruth, she is an orphan on a train traveling to Upper New York State to live with her miserly and dour great-uncle. Before she can arrive at the train station of her new hometown, the train stops because there is a large dog on the tracks with a lantern fixed to its collar. The dog leads the train engineer, a doctor(who happens to be traveling on the train) and Ruth and a few others to his injured owner. Hmm, a mystery. Who forced the young man (who was riding a bike) off the road and down the ravine? In my opinion, Ruth resembles Anne more now, but will slowly become a teenage sleuth like Nancy. This book reads a lot like "Anne of Green Gables". Ruth struggles with fitting into her new home, coming to terms with her great-uncle, catching up with her schoolwork and meeting new friends. The mystery was not well defined, but she and her friends did solve a puzzle. Definitely worth reading.- posted by Poore Richard's wyfe

Half a life-time ago, there lived in one of the Westmoreland dales a single woman, of the name of Susan Dixon. She was owner of the small farm-house where she resided, and of some thirty or forty acres of land by which it was surrounded. She had also an hereditary right to a sheep-walk, extending to the wild fells that overhang Blea Tarn. In the language of the country she was a Stateswoman. Her house is yet to be seen on the Oxenfell road, between Skelwith and Coniston. You go along a moorland track, made by the carts that occasionally came for turf from the Oxenfell.

The story begins describing the country side and long time resident Susan, her current life. The narrator takes us back in time and tells the tale of the events that shaped her life and choices she had to make. Then a little further forward again. I found this a very moving piece of literature. What would I or anyone else do when faced with what this lady did? Another very interesting and imaginative read.

Life: Expect the Unexpected By JanP Susan is true to her promise to her mother to take care of her invalid brother which she does to her own detriment. She remains unmarried, unloved and lonely when her only sweetheart marries another woman. This short story ends with Susan again giving unselfishly of her means to help others who are in need. I wish there was a bit more. Great but much too short.

In this first-person account, a composer confronts cancer as well as an increasingly debilitating dementia that threatens to rob him of both his past and his present. In something of a last ditch effort he does his best to resurrect nearly forgotten loves as well as the music of the greats that once sustained him. In the process he finds the past no less difficult to deal with than his present and is forced to confront a most unflattering image of himself. The crisp yet lyrical writing is crisp yet lyrical and alternates between staccato and legato depending on the particular stages of the composer's illness. The Hamlet-like narrator is at once dangerously close and forbiddingly distant from the reader with a climax in death's full assault with hitherto hidden revelations.

“In a bohemian odyssey set in the 1960s, a young man just out of college backpacks around the world, sampling hash, sex, and illumination as the Vietnam War rages. . . . A rich, exotic journey that will leave you reaching for your passport.” Kirkus Review It is 1966, and the narrator and his roommate are leaving their California college town in order to hitchhike to New York City and join their friends who are already there. So begins what will become a 20,000 mile journey of loss and redemption. Silk Road: The Journey is a tale of travel, adventure, and a young man's coming of age, evolving under unexpected and, at times, the most unusual of circumstances. Here, the changing landscape becomes an active - although not always benign - participant in the story. Above all, the novel is a chronicle of impermanence, in which the narrative - on one level a series of adventures in which places and events change, and bonds between people are formed, developed and severed – becomes, on a deeper level, an examination of transience, as the protagonist searches for meaning and permanence to the farthest ends of the earth, but is able to find it only when he returns home. A spirited, free-wheeling and ultimately sobering story of irreverent and reckless youth.

Vibrant history, international travel, personal relationships, modern day relevance By Fairchild While I haven't done much international traveling myself, I am obsessed with the possibilities. I also love the '60s culture; the politics, the exploration, the music, the cultural explosions resonate so much today. "Silk Road: The Journey" was recommended to me for both those reasons and it is an appreciated recommendation I'd like to share. While the narrator stands as a viable character, you can tell the author is filtering his life through him.The narrator hitchhikes across the country to NYC, deep dives into the city's offerings, then backpacks around the world. He details both intimate and transient relationships along the way, and it's often a sharing of hard lessons learned. He learns about drugs, religion (vs. faith), self-reliance, and ultimately about himself. It's a very personal, colorful, thoughtful (and thought-provoking) story. It's a dense read at times, but I appreciate the challenge. This is a novel that creates a movie in one's mind, as it's that vibrant and detailed and rich in substance. Many of its themes are applicable for consideration today. I really appreciated the author sharing his experience.

Rendezvous Tahiti, by William Stephan

Review “William Stephan’s Rendezvous in Tahiti is memoir and adventure story, natural history and romance all rolled into a single page-turner of a book. I found myself alternately enthralled by his descriptions of the places he visited as an International Tour Director and moved by his experiences as a Vietnam vet finding his way in a changed and changing world. A highly enjoyable read.” ―Alison McGhee, New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize nominee (William Stephan)“William Stephan is an artist in every sense of the word. I have had a personal love affair with the Islands of Tahiti for 24 years. Surprisingly, Stephan’s words immediately swept me off my couch in Los Angeles and back into the wild, sensual, fragrant islands that I love. This is a brilliant story.” ―Jonathan Reap, President & CEO Tahiti Tourisme North America (William Stephan)“William Stephan opens a door to the world of the International Tour Director―and once we cross that threshold, we are rewarded with a true love story set among some of the most beautiful and far-flung places on the planet.” ―Sheila Seiler Lagrand, Ph.D., bestselling author and editor (William Stephan)

I thought for sure the author was talking about some movie star or celebrity or drop-dead gorgeous political figure who had captured his fancy. Imagine my surprise when I discovered he was talking about... But, wait, you'll have to find that out for yourself. A rare find, this book is a must read for anyone who loves armchair travel, fantasizing, exotic places, life, love, and lore. Oh, yeah, and unbelievable endings! Trust me (what, you're still thinking about it?), you don't want to miss this one. It will be just as fun a read six months from now as you'll find it to be today! Five stars! Unfortunately, that's the most I can give it.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. A pleasure to read By Luc P. Cyrot This book is very intriguing and a pleasure to read. The description of Tahiti in the late sixties and early seventies is captivating. As a retiree I was also fascinated by these insights on a “tour guide” career so different from my own. Nevertheless having traveled myself as a student to Russia in the late sixties, I can vouch for the accuracy of the funny observations made there. At its core the book is also an endearing love story.

Renowned author D. H. Lawrence recounts his voyage to Sardinia in this spellbinding travelogue In January of 1921, D. H. Lawrence and his wife, Frieda, set out for unspoiled country: the pristine island of Sardinia. For the following nine days, Lawrence fixes his unflinching gaze upon the Mediterranean island, where ancient ruins collide with the detritus of a modernizing society. Blending mythology with historical fact, his account is both lyrical and shrewdly observed. With a keen awareness of the socio-political climate, Lawrence captures a Sardinia that is both timeless and of the moment.   This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices.

From the Publisher 7 1.5-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover "In January 1921, D. H. Lawrence and his wife Frieda visited Sardinia. Although the trip lasted only nine days, Lawrence wrote an intriguing account of Sardinian life that not only evokes the place, people and local customs but is also deeply revealing about the writer himself."--BOOK JACKET. "Remarkable for its metaphoric and symbolic descriptions, the book is transfused with the author's anger and joy. His prejudices and his political prophecies make Sea and Sardinia a unique and dynamic piece of travel writing."--BOOK JACKET. "The Cambridge edition restores censored passages and corrects corrupt textual readings to reveal for the first time the book Lawrence himself called "A marvel of veracity.""--BOOK JACKET.

28 of 29 people found the following review helpful. DHL and the Queen Bee do Sardinia By C. Ebeling In 1921, D.H. Lawrence joined the British literary tradition of writing a travelogue. He and wife Frieda, "the Queen Bee," were weary of Sicily where they were staying and selected Sardinia for its promise of unspoiled primitiveness and lack of "tourist-parasites." Though SEA AND SARDINIA follows many of the conventions of the travelogue genre of the time, playing to the market for a foreign experience, moments of wonder mixed with irony and nationalistic-centric sentiments, it is also a self-revealing journal in which Lawrence's passions, rages and perspectives get a frequent work-out.As travelogues go, SEA AND SARDINIA may be found somewhat lacking in the description of landmarks. Lawrence focuses on encounters with the people, who presented a multi-layered lesson in the collision of the ancient with the 20th century and the recent war. In speaking to the audience back home, Lawrence often expresses himself in literary and historical allusion and his musings ring with a psychological resonance that is both intentional and unintentional. The result is an entertaining and informative experience that imparts much about post-war Europe and this particular traveler. This is a fine critical edition. The annotations are discretely listed at the back of the book, with no disruptive footnotes blotting the page. There are also a good map, a glossary of Italian words and phrases and a brief bibliography following the text. A chronology of Lawrence's career precedes it, as does a critical introduction. Despite the quality of the introduction, I heartily recommend reading it AFTER you've enjoyed the text on your own terms, because it gives away some of the surprises (as critical introductions are wont to do).

Cadwallader As described in the other reviews, and the accompanying comments within the book itself, this is DHL as non-fiction travel writer. Note that it was written after the completion of his major works, and what it says about his views, his relationships, and the immediate post-WWI period in portions of Italy. Particularly fascinating are the local/regional/national and continental attitudes. The more things change, the more they . . .

Comes over one an absolute necessity to move By niallsop These few innocuous opening words are Lawrence's rationale for taking a short break which, in turn, became the genesis for an extraordinary travelogue.Unlike others who read `Sea and Sardinia' as part of their academic studies, I did so voluntarily. I came across a reference to it in another book on Sardinia, tracked it down and then became intrigued by what one Lawrence biographer described as one of his two most `accessible' books. (I went on to become a little more than intrigued - others might say `obsessed' - and eventually retraced Lawrence's journey and wrote my own book.)`Sea and Sardinia' is the story of a nine-day trip that Lawrence and his German wife Frieda made from their home in Taormina on the north-east coast of Sicily, to and through Sardinia and back to Sicily via mainland Italy. The historical setting is post-Great War Europe, a time of economic, political and cultural upheaval that every day was sowing the seeds of the Second World War.The story, written throughout in the present tense, is no more than a traveller's remembered diary (apparently Lawrence took no notes) of his journey ... but then this particular traveller was an accomplished writer of fiction, an acute socio-political observer and an amateur psychoanalyst.Generally it is a breathtaking read though, for some, his occasional lapses into tales of classical deities and their place as part of the story of ancient Sicily (once Greek), might be a bit tedious but it must be remembered that, like many independent travellers of the time, Lawrence was well-grounded in Classical themes and he would have expected his audience to share his knowledge, if not his interest. He was an irascible traveller; I sometimes wondered why he travelled so much for, if `Sea and Sardinia' is anything to go by, he never seemed to enjoy himself and found fault at almost every turn. Of course he and Frieda did encounter some foul hostelry, particularly in Sardinia where, except for Cagliari, the accommodation was generally basic and the food, when available, barely adequate and rarely appetizing. He clearly didn't have a lot of fun but, nevertheless, he manages to leave the reader with many humorous memories: like his pseudo-psychoanalysis of the convicts at Messina station; the woman at sea who insisted on speaking French; the man who lost his wife on the train between Cagliari and Mandas; the open-air public toilet at Sòrgono; and, most of all, his perceptive descriptions of his fellow travellers. His occasional companions on his nine-day ordeal were given nicknames which were often funny (the sludge queen), generally abusive (the mosquitoes) and only occasionally benevolent (Hamlet); Frieda was not immune, she was the q-b, the queen bee, and from time to time Lawrence uses her thoughts as a vehicle to express his gentler side, on the rare occasions when he deigned to be what Italians would call `simpatico'.Anyone who reads `Sea and Sardinia' expecting to be shown round well-known landmarks and edifices will be disappointed; it is not a guide book. Indeed Lawrence explicitly makes the point that he is not interested in such things when, describing Nuoro, he comments, "Sights are an irritating bore ... Happy is the town that has nothing to show. What a lot of stunts and affectations it saves!" That said, he and Frieda do happen upon local festivals and customs which he describes in rich and colorful detail but he does so as an honest witness rather than an impressionable tourist. As an insight into what make Lawrence tick, `Sea and Sardinia' is, I believe, incomparable; as a gateway into an extraordinary time in European social and political history, albeit through the eyes of one cantankerous and often jingoistic Englishman, it is unique.

When Schopenhauer was asked where he wished to be buried, he answered, "Anywhere; they will find me;" and the stone that marks his grave at Frankfort bears merely the inscription "Arthur Schopenhauer," without even the date of his birth or death. Schopenhauer, the pessimist, had a sufficiently optimistic conviction that his message to the world would ultimately be listened to—a conviction that never failed him during a lifetime of disappointments, of neglect in quarters where perhaps he would have most cherished appreciation; a conviction that only showed some signs of being justified a few years before his death. Schopenhauer was no opportunist; he was not even conciliatory; he never hesitated to declare his own faith in himself, in his principles, in his philosophy; he did not ask to be listened to as a matter of courtesy but as a right—a right for which he would struggle, for which he fought, and which has in the course of time, it may be admitted, been conceded to him.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. ON AUTHORSHIP AND STYLE "Obscurity and vagueness of expression are at all times and everywhere a very bad sign. In ninety-nine c By Glenn Russell If you are up for lively, insightful, sometimes outrageous essays on a variety of philosophical and literary topics, 19th century German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer will not let you down. There are 7 essays collected in this book and to share a taste of what a reader will find, below are quotes along with my comments on 5 of the 7 essays.ON AUTHORSHIP AND STYLE"Obscurity and vagueness of expression are at all times and everywhere a very bad sign. In ninety-nine cases out of a hundred they arise from vagueness of thought, which, in its turn, is almost always fundamentally discordant, inconsistent, and therefore wrong. When a right thought springs up in the mind it strives after clearness of expression, and it soon attains it, for clear thought easily finds its appropriate expression." --------- Being myself a musician and trained in nada yoga, that is, the yoga of sound, I recently started reading a short book on listening by a French philosopher and aesthetician in the postmodern tradition. The language was so convoluted and chock-full of double negatives, qualifications, obscure language and multiple references, I almost felt like shouting, ‘My good man, if you have something insightful to say, kindly say it!’ON READING AND BOOKS“One can never read too little of bad, or too much of good books: bad books are intellectual poison, they destroy the mind. In order to read what is good one must make it a condition never to read what is bad; for life is short, and both time and strength are limited.” ---------- I never tire of reminding myself that life is too short for bad taste. I would even take this a step further: if, after giving a book a fair chance, the book still doesn’t speak to me, I put it aside and find another book I can really get into, grow wings and take flight.“Any kind of important book should immediately be read twice, partly because one grasps the matter in its entirety the second time, and only really understands the beginning when the end is known, and partly because in reading it the second time one’s temper and mood are different, so that one gets another impression; it may be that one sees the matter in another light.” ---------- Schopenhauer’s words are particularly true respecting literature. The novel, story or poem comes alive and is colored by our mood, emotions and feelings. With each rereading, we gain an additional angle or slant, thus expanding our experience and understanding. I recall preparing for a group discussion of John Keats’s ‘Ode to a Grecian Urn’. It must have taken me at least a dozen readings, some silent, some aloud, to gain a basic appreciation of the poem’s rhythm, beauty and depth of meaning.THE EMPTINESS OF EXISTENCE“That human life must be a kind of mistake is sufficiently clear from the fact that man is a compound of needs, which are difficult to satisfy; moreover, if they are satisfied, all he is granted is a state of painlessness, in which he can give himself up to boredom.”--------- To gauge the truth of this statement, a question we can ask ourselves: ‘Are we easily bored?’ Our answer speaks not so much to the emptiness of existence in the abstract as to the emptiness in our own individual lives.ON WOMENSchopenhauer’s infamous misogynous essay. “Women are directly adapted to act as the nurses and educators of our early childhood, for the simple reason that they themselves are childish, foolish, and short-sighted — in a word, are big children all their lives.” ---------- Just goes to show, even a great thinker can be very, very wrong, even laughable. I’ve learned from many excellent teachers in various fields: creative writing, music, theater, dance, yoga, and most of my teachers have been women.THINKING FOR ONESELF“The presence of a thought is like the presence of our beloved. We imagine we shall never forget this thought, and that this loved one could never be indifferent to us. But out of sight out of mind! The finest thought runs the risk of being irrevocably forgotten if it is not written down.” ---------- From my own experience, my thoughts have staying power when I translate them into writing; this certainly applies to thoughts and impressions about the books I review.

A soul that is afraid of dying has never learned to live … This is the precept by which Dick Mawson has lived his adventurous life. He was born in England during the Second World War. With his parents he crash landed into southern Africa where he grew up. In the 1940's Douglas Bader lost both his legs in a plane crash. He taught himself to fly again with artificial legs, becoming a Squadron Leader in the RAF. He went on to fly with great distinction in the Battle of Britain. During the 1950's the world was not aware of another legless fighter living in southern Africa. His name was Richard Mawson, an eleven year old boy, who lost his right leg in a farm accident. A few years later a 100 mile per hour boat accident at the Victoria Falls changes the course of his life forever. With an amputated right leg and the left badly damaged his outlook was bleak, but with tenacity and a will to win instilled in his very being, he overrides his fears and the possibility of crippling himself for life. Reminiscent of the legless Squadron Leader Douglas Bader, Mawson has defied the odds and, as he says, ‘broken the boundaries of the norm’. He was lured into a life of speed and competition on water and ultimately on the race tracks of southern Africa and Europe; competing against and defeating his fellow man on a level playing field. Mawson’s memoirs take us at great pace through the difficulties he has faced and the tenacity with which he turned them into the foundations of his success – as man and racer.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. his lust for life and his love of women By George Mawson A REVIEW BY SOUTH AFRICAN PRESS Dick Mawson’s The Gods who Fell from the Sky makes for inspiring readingPublished: 15 July 2014Dick Mawson’s non-fiction début is nothing short of inspiring. Titled The Gods who Fell from the Sky, it outlines his adventurous life including the loss of both his legs during two separate incidents.Dick Mawson’s The Gods who Fell from the Sky makes for inspiring readingBy Abbygail ZwaneSometimes life is stranger than fiction and Mawson has certainly gone out of his way to prove it. Mawson presents a memoir of a man who proves himself to the world, not just once, but many times.Born in England, Mawson and his parents crash-landed in southern Africa during the 1940's. It was a few years later, at the age of eleven, that Mawson lost his right leg in a farm accident.A few years after that Mawson experienced another life-altering trauma when a 100 mile per hour boat accident left his other leg badly injured. With an amputated right leg and the left badly damaged the young Mawson’s outlook was bleak, but he continued to live with tenacity and did not allow his disability to cripple his life. This book outlines how the author managed to defy the odds and break the boundaries of the norm to live not only a normal life but a life of largesse. He was enticed into a world of speed and competition on water and ultimately on the race tracks of southern Africa and Europe, competing against and defeating his fellow drivers on a level playing field. As I read the memoir and the story unravelled, I was reeled in by Mawson’s charm, his lust for life and his love of women. I finished the book feeling inspired. Here is a man, who against many odds, made a success of himself and of his life. He was never a victim, but a survivor and not just a survivor but someone who was willing, and still is, to not only chew on the meat and bones of life, but suck the marrow.Mawson’s story is not without struggle; often he tries to ignore his disabilities in order to simply get on with it. He also finds inspiration in Douglas Bader – a World War Two pilot who lost both his legs in a plane crash, but taught himself to fly with artificial legs and went on to become a RAF squadron leader.Dick Mawson’s The Gods who Fell from the Sky is proof that how we live our life is our choice. More importantly, how we choose to see ourselves is our choice.

By Nick LeVar Every once in a while, I come across a “feel good” story, one that is motivating in its theme and humbling in its characterization. I’d recently received a .pdf copy of The Gods Who Fell From the Sky from author Dick Mawson (told from his mother’s accounting of the story), who’d assured me that his was a story of triumph over adversity, having received great reviews from other bloggers. The Gods is a creative non-fiction story that opens with the Mawson family moving to South Africa after WWII. The move was Dick’s (Richard’s) father’s idea, who’d wanted to provide a better life for his family by relocating them to Rhodesia by plane.THE PLUSESTitleThe first thing that caught my attention was the title, which threw me a curve ball regarding the story’s contents. I immediately assumed the book was some type of fantasy novel, maybe based on Greek mythology or something similar. I was wrong.“The Gods” were Dick (as a young Richard) and his family in a life or death situation as their plane took a nosedive over northern Rhodesia in 1946. It was the locals who named the family “the gods who fell from the sky” before assisting them in finding help.ThemeSome stories stick with you long after reading, and The Gods is no exception. I love the story’s theme of perseverance, triumph, and positive thinking. Even after a life-threatening injury, the story’s young protagonist holds his head together, sometimes better than his own father.Dick also highlights the hospitality of simple people; it’s easy to assume that a local population that lives off the land are, at best, dumb, or at worst, savages. That was certainly not the case with the locals, as they lent a helping hand to Dick’s family when they needed it most.Young Richard, the story’s protagonist, was a reputed track star. But when his life took a turn for the worst, he summoned the courage to find the positive in his circumstances and created other means of competing… and winning.ProseThe Gods is a fast, simple read. Throughout the course of the book, I got to know Dick and his family, a nod to the author’s ability to take himself out of the story (I hate author intrusions).TensionWhen young Richard is severely injured, it would have been easy for the author to simply tell me so. Dick didn’t do that. He masterfully ratcheted the tension and forced me to continue reading until I found out what happened:"Something was about to happen that would change my life forever."FormattingWhat was once a knock on the book, Dick has improved the formatting. Before, some of the paragraphs were indented, and some weren’t. Of course, it was only a pre-release .pdf copy, so I expected Dick to clean up the manuscript, and he did just that. The book now reads cleanly and consistently throughout.MINUSESEditingAlthough Dick improved the typos in some areas, the book still comes up short in others. For instance, he still uses single quotation marks, which should only be used when using a quotation within another quotation. Otherwise, single quotation marks are for journalists, not authors.THE GODS WHO FELL FROM THE SKY: WRAP-UPThe Gods Who Fell From the Sky is a great story. Even with the editing issues, I focused on the life and triumphs of Dick (again, as young Richard). The story is appropriate for all audiences and I plan on convincing my own children to give it a read. The right attitude trumps adversity. And young Richard carried this theme quite well.

Dick has obviously lived a full and interesting life, despite suffering a number of setbacks, especially early on. His story has inspired me to look at life a little differently. Really recommended read.
