Half a life-time ago, there lived in one of the Westmoreland dales a single woman, of the name of Susan Dixon. She was owner of the small farm-house where she resided, and of some thirty or forty acres of land by which it was surrounded. She had also an hereditary right to a sheep-walk, extending to the wild fells that overhang Blea Tarn. In the language of the country she was a Stateswoman. Her house is yet to be seen on the Oxenfell road, between Skelwith and Coniston. You go along a moorland track, made by the carts that occasionally came for turf from the Oxenfell.

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. A tough decision By Diana S. Long A short story featuring the life of the protagonist Susan. The story begins describing the country side and long time resident Susan, her current life. The narrator takes us back in time and tells the tale of the events that shaped her life and choices she had to make. Then a little further forward again. I found this a very moving piece of literature. What would I or anyone else do when faced with what this lady did? Another very interesting and imaginative read.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. half a life time ago By Rebecca m. norman it was well written but short. I enjoyed it. the ending is sad. It seemed a bit different than Gaskell's other works.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Life: Expect the Unexpected By JanP Susan is true to her promise to her mother to take care of her invalid brother which she does to her own detriment. She remains unmarried, unloved and lonely when her only sweetheart marries another woman. This short story ends with Susan again giving unselfishly of her means to help others who are in need. I wish there was a bit more. Great but much too short.
