Simons The best description for Salzbrenner's book would be "applied intercultural savvy." To me it says there should be a lot of books like this that take what we know about becoming culturally competent and applying it, simply and directly, to the variety of specific needs, which individuals and groups have when attempting to travel, work or live abroad.Athletes in particular need not only know how to get along socially and find a healthy meal, but the cultural implications and dynamics of teamwork and competing with others, to say nothing of the mindset, steps and arrangements that one needs to make in order to engage in a sporting world elsewhere, to travel in a healthy fashion, whether you are going to compete abroad professionally or just for the pleasure of it. It's all here. Salzbrenner has written a vademecum that serves precisely this purpose, and does it in a simple, attractively readable and strongly interactive way, clarifying the steps, both mental and practical, for getting to one's destination "in shape" and performing well in the cultural context as well as on the track or in the field. The layout and presentation are particularly simple and attractive and, unlike all too many books about culture and going abroad, are presented in simple, understandable language and visuals. Competing abroad? Let Susan be your coach!

Its a Book, Guidebook + Personal Check Lists, Digital resources and more By Vanessa This book is stellar because it has not just great content about what you need to think about and prepare, but also checklists, planning tools, additional digital resources and more. I loved how the book was organized, easy to read and follow. I could easily find the topics I was looking for - so sometimes I read through chapter-by-chapter or other times I used it as a reference guide and revisted specific sections. It helps with the process by giving a solid sense of direction. For athletes moving abroad, there are limited resources - and there is NOTHING that compares to this. Its highly catered to what a professional athlete or student striving to play abroad needs. Easy and fast read, but loaded with priceless information.

The girl has spent the first part of her childhood with two loving but unstable parents. The inevitable happens all at once and the girl spends the rest of her childhood in her Mom's old Brooklyn neighborhood that's in the middle of a mafia power struggle. The girl makes friends with kids in situations as bad as, or more disturbing than hers. It's a historical novel that chronicles the events that have led to the present state of affairs in the inner cities. Riots, blackouts, fires, drugs, sexual predation of unprotected minors, inequities in schools, and literally institutional racism through personal experience and much dry humor.

I enjoyed reading, probably learned something By david harwell I enjoyed reading, probably learned something, but I would have liked a little more specific, like "when I fished Hidden Lake last July there was a spruce moth fall and I fished X with great success" Nevertheless I'll put the ideas to use, perhaps that will be the key to my largest trout of the year.

Screenwriting and The Unified Theory of Narrative, Part I provides an advanced investigation of narrative structure for readers who wish to understand cinematic storytelling not in terms of its bits and pieces, but as a comprehensive whole. A great story is not a collection of parts, but a process by which many elements interact to create a single meaningful experience. By seeking the principles of these interactions, this book unites the formerly separate structures of plot, character, and theme to reveal for the first time the single overarching structure by which every successful traditionally-told Hollywood or American Independent film abides, regardless of genre, premise, style, or tone. The unified narrative structure is not a formula. It simply reveals the natural method by which great cinematic stories always have and always will unite their many elements into a cohesive line of action that communicates as well as entertains. Whether it be celebratory story like Star Wars, a cautionary tale like Raging Bull, a tragic narrative like Chinatown, or a cynical film like The Godfather, the interactions between plot, character, and theme remain exactly the same. With its approach, The Unified Narrative Structure comes as close as currently possible to a truly universal model of cinematic storytelling; one that takes into account all three dimensions of narrative and stands applicable to virtually any traditional feature-length film.

By Lenny Both this book and its companion volume ( Screenwriting Down To The Atoms) have demanded my attention. They are quite frankly the best that I have ever encountered, and I have owned and studied many over several decades. They are NOT first books to recommend for beginners. I'd recommend something like Save the Cat as an introductory read. But for intermediate and even experienced writers I have not seen a comparable book on the subject.I would suggest reading Screenwriting Down to the Atoms before Unified Theory, but I feel confident in saying that both are essential to someone who wants to truly understand the craft in the organized detail which would most avail them to a comprehensive grasp of this complex and extensive subject. The writer has performed a great service to students of screen craft. I do not feel it is hyperbole or overstatement to claim that Mr. Schock's volumes and most likely the upcoming Unified Theory, vol. II will subsequently be viewed as not only standard texts for the study of screenwriting, but acknowledged classics in the field. I am grateful for the opportunity to comment on them.

McK I liked "Screenwriting Down To The Atoms" by this author so I thought I would give this a try. I was not disappointed. I have some 200+ books on screenwriting/novel writing/story theory and none of them go into Theme the way this book does. Once you've been through the "Save The Cat"s and all the other Intro To Screenwriting books, check this one out. It's solid and it will save you a lot of time and confusion. I will warn you that while it is easy to understand, it's not cutesy-ed up like Save The Cat.

When the Grain Ran True: Memoirs of a Major League Bat Boy, by Glenn Davis

About the Author Raised in Glenview, Il, in 1965 Glenn (then known by his nickname Bob) was chosen in a contest sponsored by the Chicago Daily News to be the Visiting Team Bat Boy for the Chicago White Sox. To qualify as a contestant, he wrote a letter in the requisite 50 words and after a day-long interview process at old Comiskey Park, the rest became history for the then fourteen year old. Later, he graduated from the University of Illinois-Chicago with a Bachelors degree in Communications. Glenn became the CEO of a national professional organization before entering the rapidly evolving world of technology in 1986. There, he held various leadership roles in marketing and sales for several noted software companies including Chipsoft, Great Plains and Microsoft. During that time, Glenn honed his writing skills while expanding his love of the game of baseball. He served as a coach and teacher of the game for many years and now watches many local high school and college teams play, nearly on a daily basis. Today, Glenn is an avid motorcycle rider and the very proud father of his son Chris, himself an accomplished baseball player, and of his beautiful daughter Ashley. Glenn now resides in Walnut Creek, CA with his lovely wife Merci where he can still watch his beloved White Sox on MLB.TV.

Not only did I enjoy reading the adventurous journey of this young man as an MLB bat boy, but I also fully enjoyed the humor, wit and wisdom the author presents along the way. It is a great read for parents, kids, teachers, coaches and anyone who enjoys a wholesome coming of age story. Moreover, When the Grain Ran True talks about a time when integrity, values and the American Way still counted. I will surely read this book to my grandchildren!

There are, I suppose, few places even on the East Coast of England more lonely and remote than the village of Little Sundersley and the country that surrounds it. Far from any railway, and some miles distant from any considerable town, it remains an outpost of civilization, in which primitive manners and customs and old-world tradition linger on into an age that has elsewhere forgotten them. In the summer, it is true, a small contingent of visitors, adventurous in spirit, though mostly of sedate and solitary habits, make their appearance to swell its meagre population, and impart to the wide stretches of smooth sand that fringe its shores a fleeting air of life and sober gaiety; but in late September—the season of the year in which I made its acquaintance—its pasture-lands lie desolate, the rugged paths along the cliffs are seldom trodden by human foot, and the sands are a desert waste on which, for days together, no footprint appears save that left by some passing sea-bird.

John Thorndyke's Cases, by R. Austin Freeman

Review This man Austin Freeman is a wonderful performer -- Raymond Chandler

About the Author Deemed ‘the father of the scientific detective story’, Richard Austin Freeman enjoyed a prolific career that saw him gain qualifications as pharmacist and surgeon, pull off a diplomatic coup along the Gold Coast, work for Holloway Prison and then become a formidable writer of fiction. He was born in London, the son of a tailor who went on to train as a pharmacist. After graduating as a surgeon at the Middlesex Hospital Medical College, Freeman taught for a while and then joined the colonial service, offering his skills as an assistant surgeon along the Gold Coast of Africa. He became embroiled in a diplomatic mission when a British expeditionary party was sent to investigate the activities of the French. Through his tact and formidable intelligence, a massacre was narrowly avoided. His future was therefore assured in the colonial service. However, after becoming ill with black-water fever, Freeman was sent back to England to recover and finding his finances precarious, embarked on a career as acting physician in Holloway Prison. In desperation, he also turned to writing where he went on to dominate the world of British detective fiction, taking pride in testing different criminal techniques. So keen was he, part of one of his best novels was written in a bomb shelter. For the first twenty-five years of his writing career, Freeman was to dominate and remain unrivalled in the world of detective fiction, introducing the well-loved and highly memorable 'Dr Thorndyke'. The continued success of this character has affirmed Richard Austin Freeman’s place amongst the finest of crime writers.

Eight forays into Edwardian forensics By Patto There are eight stories in this, the earliest collection of Dr. Thorndyke short stories, published in 1909. The emphasis is on forensics, and it will soon be clear to readers of twenty-first-century police procedurals that Edwardian science was impressively modern. A. Austin Freeman spent many hours at the microscope and the camera, examining all manner of potential evidence. Behind Thorndyke the forensics wizard was Freeman the Edwardian man of science. Freeman assured the reader in his preface to this collection that he confined himself to "authentic facts and practicable methods."Freeman actually invented and tested a diabolical murder weapon for one of these stories. The analytic details and Thorndyke's feats of inference are great fun. Thorndyke analyzes the soles of boots, a tress of hair in the grip of a murder victim, the dust embedded in an old hat, and sand found on a pillow. He sees through a cipher and identifies the cause of a nervous client's hallucinations. In the course of these cases, Thorndyke exhibits knowledge of optics, ballistics, tides and reap-tides, racial differences in hair follicles, minute properties of dust and dirt, and characteristics of different types of paper and ink. In the background are various human dramas involving jealous lovers, greedy relatives, and scheming crooks.Because the stories are so early, they're replete with Edwardian atmosphere. Colorful peripheral characters abound. The stories don't feel short because of the richly detailed narration.I loved this collection. In case you'd like to know the story titles, they are: The Man with the Nailed Shoes, The Stranger's Latchkey, The Anthropologist at Large, The Blue Sequin, The Moabite Cipher, The Mandarin's Pearl, The Aluminum Dagger, and A Message from the Deep.A great read for fans of vintage detective stories.

Austin Freeman created a better detective than Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes. His "Dr. Thorndyke" is Holmes with TV's Quincy added: a more logical detective who explains things better to the reader. Indeed, some of the stories are "inverted", i.e. you know who did it and how, but you follow the good doctor as he unravels the case. I wanna new copy of his cases!

It was a gray, windy noon in the beginning of autumn. The sky and the sea were almost of the same color, and that not a beautiful one. The edge of the horizon where they met was an edge no more, but a bar thick and blurred, across which from the unseen came troops of waves that broke into white crests, the flying manes of speed, as they rushed at, rather than ran towards the shore: in their eagerness came out once more the old enmity between moist and dry.

By A Customer This is a very nice story of a disfunctional family which includes a distant father, an emotionally weak mother, a cold sister, a rotten big brother, and a physically weak little brother. The story focuses on the sister and her struggles between love for a rich cousin and her desire to help the poor of London. Thrown into the mix is an eccentric uncle who has eyes for his niece and an inheritance which complicates the issue. The question is: Is love stronger than hate, humiliation and the comforts of society. This is not a fast paced story but very rewarding for those seeking to develope their own spiritual perspective on life.

The story primarily examines a brother, his sister, and his friend (who is courting his sister), along with many interesting peripheral characters. The brother, Cornelius, is shallow, selfish, unpleasant, greedy, and constantly feels entitled to more money, more respect, better clothes, and a loftier circle of friends. MacDonald draws a picture so accurate of this character, and how his family tries to excuse the obvious signs of his terrible character, I felt as if I lived in the home, I could so well picture the people in it.The sister, Hester, is actively faithful and constantly growing towards God. Her journey is primarily fascinating because it is almost derailed by Cornelius' friend, Mr. Vavasour, who begins to court her - thinking she'll give up her faddish phase of helping the poor when she is properly his fashionable society wife.Vavasour is also well portrayed as a shallow young man who appears good because he never disagrees with anything anyone says whom he wishes to please, but his private thoughts are always turned elsewhere, and his behavior away from the good people he wishes to impress is selfish, rude and unlovely. He is fascinated by Hester, but he only wants a desirable wife he can show off. Nothing she says ever truly penetrates his artificial surface, nor does she easily realize that what's under his surface isn't what she, because he never disagrees with her, took it for.I had a hard time putting this book down, but for me though the book as a whole was excellent, the events that wound it up were unsatisfying for me, so I could not give it five stars. MacDonald has an annoying habit of developing his female characters into such saintly people that they can't marry - no man around them has similar goals. He has also created some children so saintly that all he can do is kill them off. In the end, dead good children and saintly spinsters don't make a good story for me, but I would still recommend this book as good reading and very good Christian guidance on discerning some personalities that pass for "good" when they are really considerably less than good.

Contrast By JamesWorld Immersing oneself in the world of George MacDonald brings one into such sharp contrast with our world today that it defies adequate definition. So many of our world's loose ways we take for granted are raised up to examination in the light of better, higher standard. Weighed and Wanting doesn't leave one hopeless in the face of our moral and spiritual poverty. Rather, MacDonald has a way of giving one hope. Not hope for everyone all at once, but hope for oneself. If one will hold a higher standard and try to reach it today there is hope for all. The book is a masterpiece of inner conditioning.
