A series of sentimental essays with a hunting theme By Fred Zelt This is a 207-page series of stories about hunting ruffed grouse over the last 40 or so years in rural Minnesota. The author is a small-town attorney who has had a lifelong passion for hunting ruffed grouse, and has hunted his coverts with some of today's most famous upland wingshooters. This is a series of eighteen essays, not a how-to book about grouse hunting or a natural history of grouse. It includes about 26 nice B&W drawings, mainly of grouse, by Bob White. White's work has been published in magazines such as Gray's Sporting Journal and Shooting Sportsman. Lundrigan has published stories under the pen name Ted Nelson in magazines such as Shooting Sportsman, Sporting Classics, and Pointing Dog Journal.I thoroughly enjoyed the author's previous book, "Hunting the Sun." I wrote a favorable review of it on Amazon, and have given several copies of it to good friends. "Grouse and Lesser Gods" is much more sentimental and less artistic. Only a few of the chapters, notably the last one, have the outstanding, visionary resonance that is common throughout "Hunting the Sun." I will not be buying copies of "Grouse and Lesser Gods" for friends.

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful. An excellent collection of stories By Jeremy This book is an excellent collection of short stories centered around grouse hunting in the north woods of Minnesota. Each story gives a different look into the author's sentimental attachment to the birds he chases and more importantly the land where they live.I never got the impression that this book should be considered a sequel to "Hunting the Sun" nor did I feel compelled to compare the works. This is a great book that can stand on it's own merit and shoulder to shoulder with the works of Mr. Lundrigan's contempararies.

Follow Boone and Crockett Club founder Theodore Roosevelt during his time in the Dakotas and Montana beginning in 1884. Upon his return from this particular sojourn out west he promptly organized a formal dinner with his friends and colleagues in December 1887 and formed the Boone and Crockett Club. In Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail, Roosevelt records his experiences from his hunting adventures, the people and animals that he encounters, the excitement of the round up, to the everyday life on the ranch. TR's delightful prose provides a straightforward and very entertaining read. The book is handsomely illustrated with 95 pen and ink drawings by the premier western artist of the time, Frederic Remington. This edition of Roosevelt’s Ranch Life and the Hunting Trail is part of the Boone and Crockett Club’s B&C Classics series begun in 2012. Each book in the series was authored by a member of B&C in the late 1800s or early 1900s and was hand-selected by a committee of vintage hunting literature experts. Readers will be taken back to a time when hunting trips didn’t happen over a weekend, but were adventures spanning weeks, months, even years.

From the Publisher 8 1-hour cassettes

From the Back Cover This book describes Roosevelt's routine labor and extraordinary adventures, including a stint as a deputy sheriff pursuing three horse thieves through the cold of winter. Whether recounting stories of cowboy fights or describing his hunting of elk, antelope, and bear, this book expresses his lifelong delight in physical hardihood and tests of nerve.

About the Author Theodore Roosevelt did more for conservation of our natural resources and the preservation of sport hunting than any other person in the history of our nation. He showed a keen interest in nature with his first publication at the age of 20 in 1877 on summer birds in Franklin Co., New York. His experiences in the mid-1880s in the South Dakota badlands gave him a first-hand view of the problems associated with westward expansion, unregulated hunting, and the effects of market hunting. In 1887, he and his closest friends founded the Boone and Crockett Club—the nation’s first conservation organization. He was the Club’s first president and an active member until his death in 1919. Under his direction as Club president and president of the United States, numerous laws and legislative actions protecting wildlife and our natural resources were enacted. The creation of the U.S. Forest Service, National Wildlife Refuge System, and the National Park Service, which are among his most notable achievements, paved the way to ultimately set aside tens of millions of acres for the benefit of wildlife, our nation, and future generations. Theodore Roosevelt was the right person at the right time. Frederic Remington was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer who specialized in depictions of cowboys, Indians, and the US Cavalry of the American West in the late 1800s. Love of adventure and the great outdoors, especially in the West, were the bonds that sealed the friendship between Theodore Roosevelt and Frederic Remington. "I wish I were with you out among the sage brush, the great brittle cottonwoods, and the sharply-channeled barren buttes," Roosevelt wrote to the western artist in 1897 from Washington. In 1888, Century Magazine published a series of articles about the West written by Roosevelt and illustrated by Remington.

By James Gallen "Ranch Life And The Hunting Trail" is Theodore Roosevelt's narrative of his life and experiences during his time in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s. Published in 1888, it displays Roosevelt's writing at this finest. His picture words make the scenes come alive in all their splendor. This is a TR I never knew existed. For anyone with a love of western adventure, this book is it!Besides providing the sheer enjoyment of reading, this book actually teaches the reader much about the life and economy of the era. I had always heard about the open range and the roundup, but this book makes the concepts clear. Cattle and horses were left to feed on the open range. The herds were divided during the roundup, with the calves given the brands of their mothers, as the way to assert property rights in the cattle. The devastation of a severe winter cannot be imagined until you read an eyewitness account, and few are written as well as this. The challenges of the hunt and the unique characters of the West can be experienced vicariously through the pages of this book.Frederic Remington's illustrations add visual images to the written word. This book is an excellent choice for anyone with longing for the lure of the Old West or a window into the world of Theodore Roosevelt.

11 of 11 people found the following review helpful. Vintage Teddy By starflakes From someone who has lived this life on the great plains from cowboy to hunter, this book is in every detail right on. It is written in Teddy's classic modest style (who else could float the Missouri during spring break up chasing criminals with guns and describe it with as much excitement as buttering toast). It also is a repeat of some of his earlier works as this seems to be a bit of transitional book of when he was about leaving the Elkhorn for the east. The Wilderness Hunter is more poetic and Hunting Trips of a Ranchman is a better read, but the history in this book of how Montana and the Dakotas were made safe by lynch justice makes this one interesting too.The sketches by Remington are wonderfully historic to study and add a great deal to this book. This book though is like all of Teddy's in settling down with a friend and always looking for his next book to find a campfire with him again.Thank God Mr. Roosevelt wrote so many wonderful books.

Boy was I right!!!I had previously read the author's (Bohannan) other book and this one is even better. Truly an expert on the subject of golf in the Palm Springs area, there is nobody more knowledgable on this topic than Bohannan.Very easy to read and covers the entire history of golf in the Palm Springs area -- from it's humble beginnings as a LA resort getaway up to the current PGA and LPGA events that took place a few months ago. Very comprehensive and very detailed, I felt like I learned something new on every page.If I had one complaint it would be I wish it was longer because I didn't want to put the book down!I will be buying this for all of my golfing buddies and family members for the holidays. If you are a fan of golf, a fan of history, a fan of the Palm Springs area or any combination of those, this book is an absolute must read.EXCELLENT READ!!! Would give it six stars if I could

Tom Bonner is a smart kid growing up in inner city St. Louis during turbulent times. Whole neighborhoods are being demolished in the name of urban renewal and as middle class families flee to the suburbs, gangs, crime and decay move in as occupying forces. Tom tries to live in two worlds, competing for a college scholarship during the day while running with a gang at night. When he's accused of arson and murder Bonner has to choose one path or the other. But has the choice already been made for him? Pursued by both police and rival gangs, Bonner stumbles into a network of caves under the city. Betrayed by friends, he's accepted by the enigmatic Tugboat and other down-on-their-luck strangers in a shabby shanty town on the banks of the Mississippi where he learns that school isn't the only place important lessons are taught. Will a terrible storm, a threatening flood and a tent revival provide the formula for Bonner's redemption or his damnation? If you enjoyed Tom Sawyer, The Catcher in the Rye or To Kill a Mockingbird, you're sure to like Welcome to Happy-Land.

Great read and compelling storyline By Avid Reader Characters in this book are so uniquely described that the reader will feel they know these people - particularly Tom Bonner, the main character. This is one of those books where you find yourself thinking about the players even when you are doing other activities. I read this book in one day - just couldn't put it down. Equally compelling are the descriptions of the neighborhoods and life in the 50's and 60's. As a reader, you get very drawn in to the poignancy surrounding the demise of the urban neighborhoods as they give way to "redevelopment." Nostalgia runs high as we follow Tom Bonner approaching adulthood and experiencing love, loss and redemption. A very good read! I highly recommend it.

Whether Soulard or Lafette Square a great time and place filled with memories By Amazon Customer Reading Happy-Land I was immediately transported back to those magical 50’s and 60’s growing up just a few miles and only an equally few years ahead of Tom. I was so immersed in the nostalgia of the old neighborhood that I found it hard to put Happy-Land down and felt compelled to read it in three relatively short and gratifying sessions. This while all the time annotating “post its” with my own parallel life experiences. Though his characters are fictional, the places and events were not, and the roles they played in the life of the lead character Tom Bonner were ones that everyone growing up in the old south side of St. Louis could look back and relate to in one way or another. So much so that I find it all too easy to enthusiastically encourage you to add WELCOME TO HAPPY-LAND” to your near future reading list. Those of you that read either or both of Tom’s earlier books will know the treat that lies in store.Don George

It is a curious fact that of that class of literature to which Munchausen belongs, that namely of Voyages Imaginaires, the three great types should have all been created in England. Utopia, Robinson Crusoe, and Gulliver, illustrating respectively the philosophical, the edifying, and the satirical type of fictitious travel, were all written in England, and at the end of the eighteenth century a fourth type, the fantastically mendacious, was evolved in this country. Of this type Munchausen was the modern original, and remains the classical example.

The Surprising Adventures of Baron Munchausen, by Rudolf Erich Raspe

About the Author The Baron Munchausen was in part the creation of Rudolphe Erich Raspé (1737-1794) who led a life worthy of a tall tale: naturalist, antiquarian, scholar and theif, his name figures with Daniel Defoe and Johnathan Swift as one of the great "travel liars."

By Avid Reader Anyone who ever laughed at the exploits of tall-tale heroes such as Paul Bunyan will instantly recognize the character of the Baron von Munchausen as the king of such heroes. His amazing and daring exploits are rife with hilarity and implausibility. It's part fairytale, part tall tale. The Baron is a figure of pure imagination (loosely based on a real person), a Quixotic figure. Do not confuse this book with a biography or history! Clearly the purpose of the book is to entertain and delight, which it does. The writing displays a superb creativity and imagination, combined with brilliant storytelling of the highest level. Just as you would not read Journey to the West seeking information on beauracratic procedures of ancient China, or Don Quixote de la Mancha seeking knowledge about Spanish funerary customs, you should not read this book looking to learn about the Munchausen family's history or current state. You should read it for the pure thrill of reading a good tale.

14 of 15 people found the following review helpful. Fabulous for all ages By Michael Fridman Most would be familiar with the image of Munchausen telling implausible tales with happy glee. The Raspe version is the "canonical" Munchausen story and it's very entertaining. I think that stories for children that mock reality are very good for both amusement and education and this book certainly has its share - for instance the Baron's famous pulling himself out of a bog by his own hair (in an alternate version by the bootstraps, which seems to have formed the origin for the word "bootstrapping" and a general metaphor). His tales also have the classic sense of unbelievable exploration tradition from works like the Arabian Nights and Marco Polo's travels, where exotic lands are described as being populated with people with one giant foot each and other niceties. We laugh at Munchausen but not only so much for the tallness of his stories but also for his character traits such as his pomp and sense of self-importance. As is the case with MANY good children's books, they are philosophical and suit adults as well. The only possible dent may be the portrayal of the Turks which would seem racist by some today. However, this is extremely mild compared to racism in many other classic works, and was certainly not enough to detract from my enjoyment (as was the case with certain other authors from the last few centuries).

9 of 9 people found the following review helpful. An absolute delight By E. M. Van Court If you've seen The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, you've only experience a fraction of the mischief Baron Munchausen got up to.Beginning with an endorsement by Sinbad, Aladdin, and Gulliver notarized by the the Lord Mayor's porter, the Baron's adventures begin gently and pick up speed. The chapters are of an excellent length for a bedtime story, and weave together whimsy and vivid images. Fending off a lion and a crocodile at the same time (choking the croc with the lion), travelling by balloon over Turkey and Egypt, escaping beheading, travelling to the moon and back, mixing it up with the Sphynx, and meeting lovely ladies at every turn.Brilliant, visionary, fun, ridiculous, with only a gentle touch of irony. A distinct improvement over the sullen irony that dominates the arts today. The Baron and the author are passionate and irreverent, and represent a high point in English literature.Surrealism, fantasy, science fiction, and a host of artists of every stripe can trace their inspirations back to this magnificent work of imagination.E. M. Van Court

Along the buffalo paths, from one salt-lick to another, a group of pioneers took a vagrant way through the dense cane-brakes. Never a wheel had then entered the deep forests of this western wilderness; the frontiersman and the packhorse were comrades. Dark, gloomy, with long, level summit-lines, a grim outlier of the mountain range, since known as the Cumberland, stretched from northeast to southwest, seeming as they approached to interpose an insurmountable barrier to further progress, until suddenly, as in the miracle of a dream, the craggy wooded heights showed a gap, cloven to the heart of the steeps, opening out their path as through some splendid gateway, and promising deliverance, a new life, and a new and beautiful land.

Historical fiction that is true to the times-Not for the young reader By dave This is a historical fiction novel about the time around the French and Indian War and particularly about a fort in Tennessee. It is very easy to read and brings out many of the challenges of every day life on the frontier. The subject of the French and Indian war can be rather gruesome and while this is not overly disturbing, it certainly is not for the young reader.

Paul Johnson, the most celebrated popular historian of our time, takes a scalpel to Stalin, whom he considers "one of the outstanding monsters of history." Johnson sets forth the essence of Stalin’s life, character, and career. "It has been a hateful task, which has caused me much pain and disgust," he writes with characteristic candor. "But it has been a duty I have performed not without a certain grim satisfaction."

Stalin poses a particular challenge to a biographer: How does one render such a monster human? While Johnson doesn't flinch from chronicling Stalin's rise to absolute power―the remorseless vendetta against Leon Trotsky, the development of the Gulag, the extermination of millions of peasants―he also shows Stalin playing billiards, listening to his adored Mozart, and annotating Marx’s Capital in the margins. It is, in concise form, the story of Russia in the twentieth century: dark and murderous, a stage on which to display humanity's infinite capacity for self-destruction.

20 of 21 people found the following review helpful. A valuable short biography of a 20th-century monster By Graham H. Seibert This is a brief book – a one-day read, 58 print pages. It contains the estimate essential biographical information one needs.A lot must be sacrificed in such a brief recounting of a man's lifetime. The book does not provide a great deal of historical context. The reader needs to be reasonably familiar with czarist Russia, Nazi Germany, and the first and second world wars, because Johnson simply does not budget pages to provide the background. The writing is superb, as one expects from Paul Johnson. The book flows easily and logically. It touches on the appropriate major themes: the Bolshevik revolution, consolidation of power under Lenin, forced collectivization and the Holodomor, the purges, Stalin's indecisive dealings with Germany and failure to prepare for the war, the beginning of the Cold War period, and his deteriorating health, increasing paranoia, and death.I learned from the book that Lenin was the first to use systematic terror and liquidations to consolidate his power. Stalin merely improved on proven methods. Stalin's great gift was his tremendous appetite for work in his methodical execution of schemes to keep his opponents, real or imagined, always off-balance.The very brevity of this book makes it accessible to people who need to read it, people coming of age in the 21st century. Several historians are drawing parallels between this era and that of a century ago,the last days of the Tzar, World War I, a cataclysmic war which destroyed three empires and significantly rearranged the world power structure. Significantly, the century's three worst despots, Hitler, Stalin, and Mao, got their start in these chaotic times. If we are again facing chaos, it is good to know what can possibly ensue.

8 of 8 people found the following review helpful. interesting but limited By jtq Johnson places Stalin as among history's three most evil monsters along with Mao and Hitler, but leaves open some room for demoting Stalin to the next level lower, as monsters go. Stalin was supported by marginal and violent Russian culture-now emerging again, by an astonishing array of assistant monsters possible even surpassing Hitler's befuddled coterie, but most overwhelmingly by the support Stalin got from the intelligentsia of western civilization. This would include the New York Times, the battalions of establishment defenders of Kim Philby and Alger Hiss, and those who believed in Soviet socialism for thirty years. Evil, for Stalin, had a broad and deep kind of historical support not available to Adolph.

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful. Book with only 54 pages, but accurate. By Juraj Gánovský Please, be benevolent to my not so good English. I consider Paul Johnson's Stalin one of the best book on this tyrant's life. Paul Johnson is the only one who in cold blood described 3 reasons of Stalin's transformation as a well educated man to a despot: 1-st : Christianity dead or dying, 2-nd: streak of violence, inherited from his father, 3-rd: Georgian background, which was absolutely different to Russian state culture. So Paul Johnson appropriately divided his book to 3 parts: 1-st: Choirboy to Bandit, 2-nd: General Secretary to Tyrant, 3-rd: Generalissimo to Paranoid.Paul Johnson's Stalin is comparable to Laurence Rees's: The Nazis: A warning from History. He also described Hitler's transformation as a gradual one, mainly from to 3 reasons: 1-st: Christianity dead or dying, 2-nd: superstupidity of WWI, 3-rd: Jewish background of Bolshevik revolution in Germany (of course in Russia, too). After visiting Berlin in the beginning of 1917, Hitler jump to conclusion that conspiracy took place in the heart of Germany itself and warned against it. And revolution in Germany in november 1918 confirmed his suspicion. Thus transformation of Hitler from friend od many Jews in Vienna in 1913 to strong antisemitist was complete in September 12,1919, when he become the 55-th member of deeply antisemitic DAP political party.

For someone who was supposed to be so horrible, I was left wondering when anything really terrible was going to happen. And the ending seemed to be so out of character. Without spoiling it for someone who may read it, I was very dissapointed in the ending.

But John Buchan (The Thirty Nine Steps) once said of him that he was the "greatest Jewish writer since Isaiah". This book is a good read, a political spy novel with intensity, and it is from the 19th century. It's public domain and better than most $25 contemporary novels. Download and enjoy.

After reading The Great Impersonation which I enjoyed, I was expecting not such a far-fetched plot, which I considered silly. Talk about people living in a fantasy, dream world, it is hard to take the title character seriously.

This book is a collection of letters and poems written for care of the soul in loss and grief.

“From the first to the last page, Jerry O'Neill's book attests to the way in which powerful words and silences give way 'to a hidden presence of a deepest, . . . most tender knowing.' This collection brings together deeply personal yet universal letters and poems that grab and hold our heart and attention right from the start. On a spiritual as well as visceral level, Jerry O'Neill eloquently explores the essence of time, memory, loss, love, friendship, hope, and faith. Amidst the searing pain of loss, the author both embraces and resists sources of comfort and consistently shows just how alive he is to inner promptings and external stimuli, to the music and shades of life's strangely paradoxical mix of sorrow and joy. Jerry O'Neill's book can provide solace and hope for readers in their own times of darkness.”

“Reading Jerry O'Neill's Peach, Limestone and Green I hear soulfulness. These letters and poems are replete with it – a word opens to something sacred, something more. There is the daily struggle and dance between hard reality and transcendent mystery. In this bone honest journey through grief and growth, you will discover what it means to survive loss, and then, thrive, with a heart that is open to grace.”

For anyone who has experienced the loss of someone they dearly loved, and for those who resonate with very honest, expressive poetry and writing, this book will touch the soul deeply, guaranteed. As we toggle toggle back and forth between letters to a friend and poems from different periods of the author's life, we find ourselves coming to terms with an untimely death that has left a gaping hole, very slowly to be filled with understanding and acceptance, and ... eventually ... the willingness to move forward, embracing life once again with anticipation.Grief is never an easy journey, and it takes how ever long it takes. We may never completely get over certain losses, but we find we can not only survive but eventually thrive once again. It is good to have books with authors like this one who can set an example of vulnerability and courage, to help reassure us that we are not alone, that it's okay to allow all of the feelings we have, and that it can be a good idea to reach out to others for support. What a gift this collection of writings is!

The poems are sweet and spare, and allow much room for our own personal interpretation. I especially loved the letters to Annie - reminding us not only of the immeasurable value dear friends can bring into our lives, but also (in these days of instant messaging and text) of the amazing richness of a written letter. This is a book to revisit again and again, and it will reveal new levels of meaning with each reading. A balm for the soul.

The poetry is rich, heartfelt, and vulnerable and the letters to Annie reveal how friendship can sustain us through times of unimaginable loss. As a grief counselor I am always looking for resources that resonate deeply with the experience of grief and loss and "Peach, Limestone, and Green" does just that. It is a heroic and hopeful journey through the wide ranging emotions that accompany profound grief. I recommend it to anyone who has been touched by loss.

By Stacey Halloran Gorge is a truly inspirational, honest account of Kara’s life, struggles with weight and journey to the top of Kilimanjaro at over 300 lbs. Often humorously self-deprecatory she doesn’t hold back in detailing her journey. If you’re struggling with your weight and it’s inhibiting you from living life, working out, getting moving; this is the book for you. Though you don't have to be overweight to appreciate Gorge- I feel it is for anyone looking to be inspired. For the sake of transparency, I am pictured on the cover with Kara and participated in her third trek up Kilimanjaro. I feel that Kara’s account of my personal journey and background was both fair and honest. Kara is one of the most inspiring and kindest people I know. Her resilience and determination is contagious. It’s impossible to read this book and not be inspired to put yourself out there and live life to the fullest.

She was very honest about herself and sometimes it was more than I could take in one sitting, but it was an important read for anyone who wants to overcome something and not make excuses. She is very straight forward. A good book.

Totally relate By Sandra Dunn I really enjoyed this memoir and can relate to the author in a lot of ways as I have struggled with weight loss my whole life. I loved Kara's courage and insight as she climbs the mountain not only reaching the top,but doing it while carrying a huge emotional and physical load.
