Lee's Golf in America is considered the first book published in America on golf. This slim volume really is "A Practical Manual" as its subtitle claims. Golf in America is valuable as history, tracing the import of the "Royal and Ancient" game from Scotland. Also, Lee, a member of Shinecock Hills, features the constitution and by-laws of the fledgling USGA. Furthermore, Lee devotes space to the etiquette of the game and the "peculiar and insidious fascination" it holds on those who take it up.Part of the enjoyment of this dated volume lies in the antiquated terminology. I love the names of the clubs from the time: Niblick, Brassy, Cleek, and Moshie to name a few. James Lee describes the mindset of the golfer; "lost to the world in a maze of bunkers, approach shots, niblicks, and foozles." Having only recently taken up the sport, I find myself in wholehearted agreement with the author, the game may appear simple to the unwary yet is endlessly fascinating. The forward is written by President George H.W. Bush, whose grandfather George Herbert Walker was a past president of the USGA.
