Bette Stoll has to intuit her own way. Born a middle child in a troubled family, neglected and lonely after the death of her grandmother when she is only seven, she takes comfort riding her horse alone in the virgin woods on her father's Michigan farm. When in 1957 his mental breakdown transplants the family to Southern California, they join a national migration West. Bette, a naive farm girl, is dropped at the onset of adolescence into the wild circus of the psychedelic Sixties. Her love affair with the runaway scion of a wealthy Mexican family leads her into a labyrinth of tragedy she struggles to escape. Through all her back roads and detours, Bette stays honed on her path of becoming a writer. This is the chronicle of Bette's perceptions of what happened and how her perceptions shaped her. This is the truth as she experienced it. No doubt these events will be remembered differently by others. This is not their story.

This is Bette's story, and I am Bette. So difficult were some memories, I could approach them only by assuming the guise of a third-person narrator. More courageously, I may have written an autobiography wherein witnesses would be interviewed and facts verified. Because it is mined from my memories, I call this a memoir. The journals I have kept since adolescence helped reconstruct the happenings and refresh the ambiance, but no event is invented. It has taken me twice the number of decades recorded in this chronicle to believe my formative experiences may have significance for others. At the same time, I am glad to have finally recorded Roberto's story. We are all mere specks flashing in a vast cosmos. What you hold in your hands is the culmination of my life's spark.

An astonishingly well written personal journey By DKT When choosing to relive and reveal one’s life experiences, doing so in the third person may well be the only way to get the job done. In doing so, Elizabeth has found a mechanism for documenting the journey of self that was her life in those childhood through early adult years. And what a journey. For those of us who remember the impact the 60’s and 70’s had on society, especially those of us who were in our late teens and 20’s then, Eilzabeth’s revelations will be relatable. And if you were a young woman then, it hits home on so many levels. Yet this is Bette’s story and more importantly, Bette’s journey. A good read but not always an easy one, I found myself stricken by the brutally honest experiences shared not only for their intensity, but for the fact that I had to face of few of my own that had been safely and neatly suppressed. And while I spent those same years never leaving the confines of my environment, I am envious of at least Bette’s willingness and bravery to seek. I enthusiastically recommend Grand River Highway.

Fackler-Sinkovitz tells it like it was for her By Amazon Customer A Review of: Grand River Highway; One Woman’s Journey To AutonomyBy: Rosalyn StevensonFackler-Sinkovitz has written a memoir that tells her life in simple language that belies the emotional impact of the vignettes she has remembered that piece together a life. She has created a sweeping story of a female child, precocious sexually, with a dreamy independence that separates her from family and friends, but which drives her without hesitation to self-actualization as a writer and as a person.I wonder about authors. Why do they write? Why do they have to? I wonder about their personal lives. Do they smoke? Do they drink? Do these things help them to think and to express? I wonder about their weaknesses and their humanity.I want writing that is gutsy, authentic and that speaks to my humanity, says yes to my own experiences and then elucidates what I have not been able to put into writing or speak of myself. I want “Yes, that is how is it is, and you, Author, have said it.” Even the most far out fiction has to have Truth in it, or we, the reader, give up and say NO.Fackler-Sinkovitz has delivered this in her memoir: Grand River Highway: One Woman’s Journey To Autonomy. We may have forgotten that the 1960’s produced a generation of women who instinctively and collectively renounced male dominance, monetary concerns, and societal group shaming and sexual repression. Fackler-Sinkovitz tells it like it was for her, and this honest telling radiates memories into the mind for those of us who also grew up in these times.Pot, LSD, sex, fleeting sexual liaisons, intimations of re-incarnation. It is all here. And honestly told, it takes us back. We dream remember. We remember the strange rapture and the silent mind gone into space. Space we walked into as resilient, wiser children. Female children who have had such little voice.Read it, and remember. Or learn.

We were struggling in different ways to manage our dysfunctions and our gifts and we shared some pivotal adventures. Reading GRH was quite an experience for me, emotionally and historically. I was immediately immersed in the particular ambience of those times, the changing values, the civil unrest, the youthful challenge and rejection of the status quo. And my personal intensity and instability; Elizabeth took me right back there. I am so impressed by her writing skills, her weaving the many strands of her story together, and her courage in exposing her vulnerable soul. I suppose we respect most the things we ourselves cannot do, and I could never have done what she has done with this book. I am looking forward to the next 30 years.
