Excerpt from Taylor on Golf: Impressions, Comments and HintsThe vast extent and continual growth of the game must be my apology for Taylor on Golf. I trust that it may prove of benefit to players, young and old, and also to those who may be considering the possibility of becoming identified with the game.I have dealt with the subject as concisely as possible, and my hope is that the path to success may, by what I have written, be rendered easier to my readers. The point of view from which I have approached the Royal and Ancient game has been that of the professional, and I have attempted - I trust not a together unsuccessfully - to represent the views of the class of which I am proud to be a member.I must especially thank Mr. Fred W. Ward for the assistance he has rendered me in the production of this book, Mr. M. A. Nixon and Golf Illustrated for the use of photographs, and Mr. G. W. Beldam for his masterly snapshot photographs, which, with those taken for me by Messrs. Gunn and Stuart, illustrate the strokes I use in actually playing the game.About the PublisherForgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Taylor not only provides instruction, but expresses definite views on how to improve the status of the struggling professional, even suggesting a sample salary schedule. This reprinting from the original source is particularly well done. It's hoped that Taylor's later memoir--"Golf As I Have Known It"--will soon be reprinted as well.

"Papers, magazines, all the popular novels! Can't I sell you something this morning?" Joshua Bascom turned as the train boy addressed him, and revealed an honest, sunburned face, lighted up with pleasurable excitement, for he was a farmer's son and was making his first visit to the city of New York.

The Erie Train Boy, by Horatio Alger

From the Back Cover

From the publication of Ragged Dick in 1867 through to the 1930s, Horatio Alger’s tales of young boys overcoming adversity were part of the mainstream of American culture. The phrase “a Horatio Alger story” remains synonymous with the American ideal of struggling against adversity and finally achieving success, financial and otherwise―but especially financial.

As Michael Moore says in Dude, Where’s My Country?, “Alger was one of the most popular American writers of the late 1800s. … Alger’s stories featured characters from impoverished backgrounds who, through pluck and determination and hard work, were able to make huge successes of themselves in this land of boundless opportunity. The message was that ‘anyone can make it in America, and make it big.’” Ironically, however, it is typically chance and good luck that is most instrumental in bringing success to the typical Horatio Alger hero, hardworking and deserving though he may be. And often the ideal of egalitarianism features just as prominently as that of rugged individualism.

In all these respects, The Erie Train Boy (1890) is typical of the genre. For a number of reasons, however, it is among the most interesting of Alger’s many novels. Fred Fenton is the Erie train boy, a young lad selling sundries on the trains traveling north from New York and through this work supporting his mother and siblings as the family struggles to survive in a New York tenement house. The story eventually unfolds in a more or less mechanical fashion, but along the way we are shown a world of confidence men and pickpockets, of cheap boarding houses and railway hotels, and of a good deal of the grit of life in late nineteenth-century America. We are given sensation―from Fenton rescuing a young woman whose dress has caught fire from the footlights in the midst of a performance, to a saga of stolen bonds secreted near a Quebec village, to an episode of thievery at Niagara Falls, and finally to a scheming uncle and a parcel of land in Colorado. We are given as well a great deal of detail about the social and economic life of the times; Alger pays attention to wages and prices perhaps more than any other writer of the period. All in all, The Erie Train Boy is among the most far-reaching and most interesting of Horatio Alger novels.

The different editions of Alger’s novels reflected as much as they shaped American culture in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Later editions of the novels were often shortened. This made them more of a “quick read,” but in many cases the material selected for excision was ideologically charged; descriptions explicitly or implicitly critical of the privileged classes were disproportionately likely to be cut. In this respect, too, The Erie Train Boy is an interesting example of the genre; later editions cut a considerable amount of material from the original.

In addition to providing the text itself, this Broadview reissue endeavors to make something of its cultural history available for readers. The copy text is that of the early edition published by M.A. Donahue & Company, collated against the A.L Burt Company edition from the 1890s; both of these include the complete Alger text. The text has also been collated, however, against the edition published by the Whitman Publishing Co. circa 1920―an edition that was considerably abridged, though no acknowledgment of this was made in the volume itself―and an appendix provides full information on the changes made for this later edition. Readers will thus be able to trace the ways in which the text was altered through abridgement. Also included as an appendix to the volume are cover illustrations and advertisements from all three editions.

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful. Entertaining story about adventures in America 100 years ago By Henry Cate III Horatio Alger was one of America's most popular authors. He was born in 1832 and died in 1899. Over 250 million copies of his books were published. Horatio lived in poor parts of New York City and thus was able to write in detail about how the poor lived. His Rags-To-Riches stories excited the imaginations of the youth of the day. It is sad to see that books written for teenagers over a hundred years ago are now stored in the adult section of the library. The vocabulary is much richer than youth books being published today. When looking for Alger stories always try to get an unabridged version. But be warned, some of the Horatio Alger stories are not as good as this one. For example "A Rolling Stone" is very racist. The hero in the "The Erie Train Boy" is Fred Fenton, a hard working 17 year old boy. We first meet him on a train where he sells travelers food, magazines, and books. He is struggling to provide for his widowed mother and his younger brother. Early in the story they almost get kicked out of their apartment because they don't have enough money to pay the rent. It is such a contrast to see how times have changed. For example their rent back then was $10 a month, and they had very few possessions.Fred has a number of adventures in New York City. He also does some traveling, first going over to Niagara Falls, and then later up into Canada. At Niagara Falls Fred is suspected of being a thief, but is able to prove his innocence and help find the real crock. Later in the story he ends up working for a wealthy man and is entrusted with a mission to go into Canada to recover some stolen bonds. This is a fun book. It is very well written. My children kept asking me to read the book. If you want an entertaining story about life in America over a hundred years ago, this is a great book to buy.

In a world of ever increasing advances seemingly created to make our lives easier to manage, envisioned to bring us together, to draw us closer, we are still in many instances isolated and at odds and validly apart. Something is missing, there is a snag, a rip, a hole in the spiritual fabric that we all see; yet we continue to fail to address. It has been said by self-proclaimed philosophers, theologians, scholars’ and politicians that the abuse of words can be a danger, there are those that believe words are a leading factor in what ills our society. Of this we do not deny in full, there have been abuses, history is but a melody to that fact, yet it is also true that words have the innate capacity to bridge, to heal that which divides. Opinions, views, religions, nations, people, even love divides. The focus of this book and the poets here in, is to give breath to a wide range of issues both small and controversial that lie beneath the surface. Things that we are often hesitant to discuss. In saying that, I will offer that the role of a poet is not to persuade or to add more rhetoric to the static we hear. A poet’s responsibility is to shine the light of awareness, to create a platform for dialogue, for healing, to gather up the images in an attempt to understand what we see.

Enlightenment for Over-Programmed Christians By Bacchus This is a wonderful old book filled with profound observations about Western man's relationship with God. Written by a post-Victorian intellectual mystic, who happened to be a production designer by trade, this book recounts the author's salvation from near-suicidal depression via a personal mystical experience. The insights gained through that experience inspired this book, which attacks the stagnant relationship modern Christians share with God. He exhorts the reader to open up to a richer and more meaningful interpretation of Christ's teachings, relying more on his recorded words and less on the intercession of stilted preachers who have lost all connection with his original teachings in favor of their myopic cultural programming. At their best, King's words attain the power of elegant, inspirational poetry. At their worst, they retain a few scant traces of Western cultural chauvinism, although it seems likely this pose was adopted to appeal to his intended target. If you're looking for accessibly written clues to life, this is worth a look. Stay with it to the end, it gets deeper and more impressive as it goes on. And don't be put off if you're agnostic -- King is as much an evolutionist as he is a true believer.

The first Ohio stories are part of the common story of the wonderful Ice Age, when a frozen deluge pushed down from the north, and covered a vast part of the earth's surface with slowly moving glaciers. The traces that this age left in Ohio are much the same as it left elsewhere, and the signs that there were people here ten thousand years ago, when the glaciers began to melt and the land became fit to live in again, are such as have been found in the glacier drift in many other countries.

I developed a hunger to know the beginning stories and this book feeds some of that hunger. I have other history books bought from Amazon on Ohio and Virginia and Kentucky history that I would definitely recommend to anyone who loves History.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Charming but Dated By LitProfDean Critic and novelist Howells seems to have written these nonfiction "stories" in the late 1890s--Ohio native William McKinley has been elected President but not yet assassinated, though the title page has no copyright date. Howells was ahead of his times in all areas, but his perpsective will still seem dated to the general or undergraduate reader. For those of us who teach and study the history and cultures of Ohio, it is an interesting text that ranges from the earliest natural history of the region through Logan's Lament and Mad Anthony Wayne, the Battle of Lake Erie, and Ohio notables like John Chapman (aka Johnny Appleseed).

Review

“Marie White Small’s mesmerizing prose has delighted people locally for years, but now with the publication of Stony Kill, her work will get a wider and much deserved audience. This book is filled with energy and surprise, and Small’s poignant choice of words and phrases make it a pleasure to read. Every reader will be absorbed in this spellbinding book and learn what we in Vermont have known for years―Marie White Small is a true gem.”

“Marie White Small’s use of language reveals the culture and unique qualities of her characters. She examines an authentic life with all its discomforts and struggles. I am in awe of what she has accomplished; her courage and conviction to boldly look back with clear eyes is her greatest gift to her readers.”

“In this story of old family wounds, author Marie White Small opens with a gunshot and uses skillful pacing to keep the mystery behind that violence a secret until the very end.”

(Back cover)

Brooklyn café owner and baker Joss Ryckman was dressed in pink by her mother but called “Paulie-girl” and “Boy-o” by her father, Paul. Now a grown woman, she’s still living in the shadow of the hopes and wishes of her parents. When her mother dies, Joss returns to her mother’s ancestral home in Cannan, NY, a place haunted by tragedies. She lives the dual life that her mother did 20 years before, traveling between Canaan and Brooklyn. But the men in her life want more from her. Wyatt, a combat veteran who loves her, is fighting to remain by her side even as she pushes him away. She is also pulled back to the city by another in a long series of acts of gun violence by her aging and volatile father. VERDICT Joss’s  understanding her father’s penchant for violence and anger takes a long time to unfold. The book relies heavily on dialog that doesn’t always propel the narrative. In the end, this debut author still provides a gripping snapshot of a dysfunctional family torn apart by their own doing.

(Susan Santa Library Journal)"In Small's sprawling, evocative debut, Joss Ellen Ryckman stops running from her past and, after the death of her mother, returns to her childhood farm in upstate New York . . . This deeply expressive book is a fine exploration of personal history and the significance of place as a means of finding oneself." - Publishers Weekly

I loved being transported to upstate New York and became immediately wrapped up in the main character’s story. I fell in love with Miss Euphrates, the African-American caregiver to main character, Joss. I wanted to be the one sitting in the brightly lit, warm kitchen filled with lovely aromas—swept up in capturing every word that Miss Euphrates spoke . . .while learning her baking secrets. Author, Marie White Small is a masterful storyteller. She transports readers into a splendidly detailed land along a river called Stony Kill, weaving a tale of sorrow and redemption amongst breathtaking landscapes with imaginative dialogue. She left me wanting more. I would love to be in a book club discussing Stony Kill!

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful. I Couldn't Put It Down! By C. Pome A lyrically written story on a topic that is so timely. The impact of gun violence on all who experience it is woven into this dramatic novel by Marie White Small. The characters all have distinct and wonderful voices and without being in anyway clinical the author demonstrates what it's like to have PTSD. It was a book I couldn't put down.

Marie Small creates deep and vivid characters that confront some of their family's darkest secrets. The story unfolds across a landscape made vibrant by Small's masterful prose. We are transported into their world as the story builds. Stony Kill is a must read for lovers of literary fiction, family drama, and and complex characters. Looking forward to Marie Small's next!

The Geneva express jerked itself out of the Gare de Lyons. For a few minutes the lights of outer Paris twinkled past its windows and then with a spring it reached the open night. The jolts and lurches merged into one regular purposeful throb, the shrieks of the wheels, the clatter of the coaches, into one continuous hum. And already in the upper berth of her compartment Mrs. Thesiger was asleep. The noise of a train had no unrest for her. Indeed, a sleeping compartment in a Continental express was the most permanent home which Mrs. Thesiger had possessed for a good many more years than she would have cared to acknowledge. She spent her life in hotels with her daughter for an unconsidered companion.

Like Mason's Four Feathers, it's a romantic adventure story, the final scene set on the great Brenva face of Mont Blanc, though much of the story takes place in England.A word of warning about this edition; If you look on p. 3, you will see the phrase "humaning her with a smile." The original, of course, reads "humanizing her with a smile." The misprint of "humaning" is also found in the Project Gutenberg version, and I imagine this text has been taken from Gutenberg (which also has some other mistakes in it). So why not simply download the Gutenberg text, which is free, and put up with the misprints? or, if you want a better version, go search one of the used booksellers on the web, and get a used copy of the real thing?

She leaves her mother's overbearing yet heedless care to go live with the father she's never met. Meanwhile, she meets climber Hilary Chayne, and together they uncover a plot which endangers a young man with links to both.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Fantastic By Alba in Bookland I have to admit that I was not a big fan of Giovanna Fletcher's debut, Billy and Me, and I never got around to read her second novel, You're the One That I Want. But when I spotted this beautiful cover and read the blurb of her new book, it picked my curiosity. It sounded really interesting and I decided to give it a go. And oh man! I can't tell you how glad I am that I did. Dream a Little Dream is such a cute, fun and perfect novel. I loved the concept, I loved Sarah and her gang of friends and I fell completely in love with Giovanna's writing. The idea behind the story is such a clever one. Imagine you start dreaming about someone from your past that you haven't thought about in years. Little by little that someone starts becoming the center of your dreamland, and you spend almost your whole (boring) day wanting to go back to sleep to catch up with that someone. And then bam! That someone makes an appearance in your real life! That's exactly what happens to Sarah when Brett, an old university acquaintance takes centre stage in both her real and dream life. Obviously, real Brett and dream Brett are slightly different but Sarah can't help thinking about their night adventures (yes, there are sexy dreams involved) in front of real Brett, which leads to real fun situations. And some of the dreams are hilarious, with celebrities guest appearances and that crazy vibe dreams are made of.Sarah is a really lovable character with whom we can relate easily. She feels like everyone around her is making progress both personally and professionally. But she is stuck in the same tedious job she got when she left uni. Also, her ex boyfriend (who is still in her group of friends) is getting married, no less! I think we all, as we approach the scary 30 (why are you supposed to have all your life mapped out at that age?) start feeling like a bit like Sarah. So it was really cool to read how she started believing more in herself and started taking her life back in control. Because dreams are there to follow, aren't they?A special mention to Sarah's group of friends, which were a lovely bunch and reminded me how important friendship is. They had their stories to share, and one of them really got me.Dream a Little Dream really is a fantastic book that I can't recommend enough. It touches many familiar topics and gives a clear positive message that will stay with for a long time. I am so glad I picked this book and gave Giovanna's writing a second chance. I can't wait to read her second book now.

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful. Fab! By Simona Elena I loved both of Giovanna’s previous novels, so I was really excited to start this one!Dream a Little Dream follows Sarah. Sarah is a really relatable and lovable character. She has been single for a while and struggles with seeing the people around her having a wonderful personal life and a great job as well. Her ex-boyfriend left her for the girl he is engaged to now and the weirdest thing about the situation: He is still in her group of friends and they see each other quite often, with Lexie being there as well. Sarah has a wonderful group of friends. Her flatmate Carly is awesome and her other friends are just awesome! It was so much following them around, especially for the pub quiz nights. Some of her friends also have their own story to tell, which was fab and got really emotional at one point.Sarah works as a PA, her boss is a nightmare. She hopes for a promotion, but that isn’t easy. On top of that she starts dreaming about a guy, they are a couple in these dreams and then suddenly BAM!, he stands in front of her in real life. Dream Brett seems to be perfect, but Real Brett is different, his features are different and also some of his behaviour. Of course Sarah starts comparing them, which results in some hilarious, funny and entertaining scenes.Brett is a great guy, I really liked him and they had an electric chemistry from the start. Each chapter starts with a very detailed dream of Sarah and Brett. It was a wonderful way to get into the chapter and the story. There were some cute scenes, really memorable dreams and also sexy and a bit steamy ;)Giovanna did it again! She created a wonderful story with awesome characters, full of love and friendship and brilliant and flowing storyline, just amazing! Her writing is fantastic and really gripping. Billy and Me stays me fave of her, but this one is fab as well. Giovanna has a magnificent voice and style!

If you’re looking for a fun, contemporary book to read this summer, this is it.I liked this book because of the character development. Our main protagonist, Sarah, is really insecure at the beginning. All along I got this hints of her great potential but seeing it come to fruition and her total transformation in the end was amazing. And inspiring. Because I’m kinda in a similar situation and I was able to relate to her.Sarah’s group of friends is amazing. Nevermind the fact that her ex-boyfriend is a part of this group. As weird as it sounds, it means a lot for the story. They’re all funny and witty and I loved how they all hung out every Wednesday for a pub quiz. They get really competitive and the most hilarious thing happens on one of those night. Makes me laugh just thinking about it. I was going to quote but it seems I can’t quote from galleys. You’ll have to read the book to find out.(sidenote: there is a parallel storyline for Carly and Josh, two of Sarah’s friends. I wanna read an entire book about those two)Then, there is Sarah’s family. Her mother could be my mother. Seriously though…her mum keeps asking about her love life, her job (don’t all mothers do the same) and the love life of their friends. I would also be annoyed in Sarah’s place. But, when Sarah’s mum finally says she’s proud of her, I felt proud of her too. Her brother is also like my older brother. Gets out of the way when the big guns come ;)There were some things that I didn’t particularly care for. The dreaming parts were often too long and weird. Also, I didn’t find Bret likable. And the scene at the Christmas party was a bit too much. The book could have been a bit shorter too.Overall, the plot isn’t something that will blow you away. It’s the characters that make this book as good as it is. It’s definitely a book worth checking out. Especially if you’re interested in a career in TV/media.Whew, this may very well be the longest review I’ve ever written. But I wanted to be thorough. I’m also uploading a video review soon. I’ll add it here once it’s published.~ Rating ~4 stars~ Recommendations ~A perfect summer read

A Good Book for Becoming a Better Swimmer By Abu Dhabi Bobby Well organized and carefully written instructions that would be very useful to anyone like me who knows how to swim but would like to improve his swimming ability. The only thing it lacks is an audio version to take to the pool so readers could review different points about improving the various strokes while they are practicing.

A lot of the book was a reiteration of common sense, but reading it sometimes make you think about it that much more. I like that there was a section of the basics you should probably bring along to a backpacking trip, for most anywhere you go. Some of the items were an afterthought, but can prove to be very important. After reading this book, there were a few things I probably would have forgotten to bring, so I am glad I read this! I do not plan to go backpacking soon, but I do plan to go someday!

The author first starts our by giving you tips on how to get into shape before you set out on your backpacking expedition which I think is very smart. But even smarter is the tip he shares on making and keeping a trip planner. Some really great advice.

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. good story and educational By Amazon Customer Rodoe Finn by Clare O’Beara is a beautifully written book. It has taken me a few weeks to read the book due to a very busy life but I have looked forward to settling down at night with Kindle in hand to read more about Finn (who is from England) and her adventures at her Uncles farm here in the US.I enjoy a book that is both a good story and educational at the same time. If you have a young teen who loves reading books about horses and would like to learn more about them, this is a great book to read. It is clean with many lessons of life. I appreciate the way Finn was a responsible, helpful, respectful young lady. This is truly a great book for anyone to read but especially a young teen.

Turfa hilip Dodd's background permits him to draw from a wide variety of sources, which makes for some very interesting reading. The pieces which appealed to me the most were the nes in which he spoke about his family and childhood, such as "1914-2000" and "My Father Was a Soailor". "What the Shepherds Saw" provides a new insight on the familiar Nativity story, since it is the innkeeper who speaks. "The Redunancy of Gods" raises from interesting points also. There also are insights into contemporary affairs. "A Man From Syria" cuts through the rhetoric ans gives a pleas to end the war, thereby ending the refugee crisis. Like the other poems, is one is written in an easy-to-read tone and meter. Several of these pieces could easily be set to music I would do so, if I could. Perhaps someone else will.I recommend "Still the Dawn: Odes and Poems" as a pleasant read for the times one has to sit down and reflect on what has been read
