About the Author Leroy McClure Jr. was concerned about the high illiteracy and drop-out rates in the African American community. McClure’s vision from God became clear when he discovered his brother, Sam, was dyslexic when he worked at a school for students with learning differences. McClure created the FOCUS Centre of Learning, Inc. He is the only African American male Certified Academic Language Therapist in the country. He has twenty-five plus years of experience in working with children with learning difficulties and has hosted basketball clinics for hundreds of children in the Dallas–Fort Worth metropolitan area. McClure trained teachers to work with struggling students using a multi-sensory teaching approach. Also, he started a charter school for students from pre-K through twelfth grade. He became the Founder/CEO/Superintendent for FOCUS Learning Academy, Inc. with two schools called FOCUS Learning Academy and Triple A Academy. The entire school serves approximately one thousand students. In 2012-2013, the Triple A Academy boys’ varsity basketball team became the first charter school team in the history of the state of Texas to win a state championship. His son, King, was one of the starting guards for the team. He completed two years at Richland Community College in Dallas where he played basketball. In 1983, McClure finished his bachelor’s degree at Mayville State University in Mayville, North Dakota. McClure attends Ovilla Road Baptist Church where he serves as the chairman of the Deacon Board. He and his wife, Yvette, live in Ovilla, Texas, and has four children, Shelton, Jenna, King, and Princess.

It was full of practical wisdom on not only how to become a better basketball player but also a better follower of Christ. Leroy shared some of his life experiences and the modeling that he provided for his son- who is one of the best incoming freshman basketball players in the country. King's shooting accuracy as a senior (2 points per shot; 32 points per game; 65% FG; 49% 3pt; 86% FT) were off the charts impressive for a player who demanded the opponent's best defender every game.Anyone looking to improve their shot mechanics would be wise to seek Leroy McClure's counsel. He has a proven track record in this area.

How to Shoot A Basketball and a Lot of Good Insights on Life By Technology Business & Life This is a review of “The Shot Doctor: Nothin’ But Net” by Leroy McClure.Disclaimer: I have known Leroy for several years and consider him to be an outstanding person and a friend – so my review might be biased, but I believe this is a reasonably accurate review/preview of what the book is all about.The Shot Doctor is a short book that could be 4 different books. Here is a look at the 4 themes I found in reading The Shot Doctor.The first theme reminds me of Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People.” Like Carnegie’s classic best seller The Shot Doctor is filled with practical advice on how to use good judgement to get good results in life. Some of Leroy’s insights might sound similar to what Carnegie would say or to what other trusted advisors might say but most of the suggestions in this book are unique to Leroy. Throughout the book you will find pearls of wisdom that can make you more productive, more successful, and happier.The second theme of the book will appeal highly to people who look to Christianity for spiritual guidance. Leroy is pretty religious but he doesn’t preach religion to convert people to his religious beliefs as much as he references religious teachings that he believes will help people lead better lives.The third theme of this book is somewhat of an autobiography of Leroy’s life. It is not an in-depth recounting of Leroy’s life (the entire book is only about 60 pages and this theme is roughly a quarter of the content) but the book gives the reader a sense of where Leroy came from and how he has worked diligently to lead a good life as a young man, as an adult, as a basketball player, as an educator, and as an entrepreneurial and hardworking businessman who has had to figure out how to fund and build his initiatives every step of the way. The book doesn’t fully tell how hard and energetically Leroy has worked but I’ve watched him for years and there is no doubt, Leroy is a very hard worker who uses his time productively and generously for the benefit of others. The book also gives a glimpse into how Leroy has worked to harness his love of basketball in a manner that is consistent with his larger mission to build educational opportunities for about a thousand students per year at the charter school that he and his wife established from inception. Additionally, the book shows Leroy’s effort to balance his interests and his responsibilities as an educator with his responsibilities as a husband and a father. One of the things that most stood out for me in the book and that I’ve also observed in knowing Leroy is that while Leroy gives his best across his roles as an educator and a husband/father and while he works diligently to build everything he pursues with consistently noble intentions is that when Leroy suffers a setback he somehow always reacts with grace. In fact, whether Leroy wins or loses in basketball or any aspect of life he is the same thoughtful, kind, energetic, positive, and grateful person. If you get nothing else out of this book it would be worth striving to understand a how person can so continuously remain focused on finding the best path forward, driven by the best intentions, under all circumstances favorable or otherwise – and always with a view to not only how will it help the person learn and grow from the experience, but how it will impact his family and everyone else that he can reach with a positive influence. Leroy’s love of basketball has helped players earn college scholarships but his love for education and for helping people develop to their fullest potential will lead to hundreds if not thousands of other people earning admittance to college in a neighborhood that never previously produced such results.The fourth theme of this book happens to be how to shoot a basketball. Tied to this theme are sub-themes including Leroy’s career as a high school and college basketball player, the development of his son King McClure as one of the most outstanding 2015 high school basketball players in the nation, and finally Leroy’s techniques for not only building great basketball players in general but also his technique for learning to shoot a basketball with excellent results. And for Leroy, shooting a basketball successfully doesn’t just mean adopting techniques that provide good form or other qualitative assessments, it means attaining excellent quantitative results. Leroy thinks basketball players should strive for and attain considerably higher shooting percentages than most players and coaches might deem to be successful percentages – at the free throw line, in the midrange, and with three point shots. Part of Leroy’s success is he sets big goals and he measures as he diligently pursues his goals – and he instills goal setting, hard work, and honest measurement as keys to success for athletes and students. Leroy gives lots of encouragement but he also advocates inspecting what you expect. At the same time, Leroy is not a coach or an educator who will shift blame to his players or students; Leroy takes responsibility for leadership seriously. As Leroy says, “You can expect anything, but you can only inspect what you have taught.” If you are a coach or a parent you can use Leroy’s methods to teach players how to shoot a basketball with more success. If you are a player you can learn Leroy’s methods.My guess is that given the title and the cover of the book many readers will expect the book to be all about learning to shoot a basketball. While how to shoot a basketball turns out to be perhaps a quarter of the book I would say two things should be considered.First, even though how to shoot a basketball is only some of the content in the book it is very solid advice. I’ve watched Leroy shoot, I’ve watched his son King shoot and play lots of basketball, and I’ve watched other players under Leroy’s guidance. Leroy’s basketball techniques will provide a dedicated basketball player who follows his advice with the opportunity to develop a shot that is limited only by the player’s commitment. Leroy has broken down shooting to the most important essentials. Shooting a basketball doesn’t need to be complex but it does need to be fundamentally sound and highly repeatable. If you want to shoot a basketball with excellent results this book will provide you with what you need as long as you follow the advice and put in the time and effort.Second, Leroy will be the first to tell you that is doesn’t matter where you started or where you came from, it matters where you are going and how you plan and work to get there. If you buy his book to learn to shoot a basketball you will find that Leroy’s advice can give you ideas and encouragement that will help you shoot a higher percentage – and that also can change your life for the better and help you change the world around you for the better.
1 of 1 people found the following review helpful. Tips for Life By Kim Duncan The “Shot Doctor” was an inspirational, motivating, quick read, book. I have watched basketball for years and followed my son from elementary school through college as he played, but never really understood the art and dynamics that went into the sport, until reading this book. I now understand that there is more to sinking the ball than just hitting the backboard or practicing for hours. “Nothin but Net” is perfection, hitting the backboard is average. You must read to understand this concept. To me, the techniques and practices illustrated in this book are fundamental and best practices. With that said, I was also able to make a connection between these key practices and being successful in whatever you hope to accomplish in life. Mr. McClure recommended several techniques or practices that would lead to success. You must read to find out. Finally, it is a blessing to hear that the priority of one’ s life is God, family, and basketball, in that order.
